We drove from afar just to make a trip to the Hong Kong Market plaza to try all the weird Indonesian and Malay food this little food court had to offer. We went around the other shops and was so happy that we decided to order the nasi bungkus from here. I’ve never had nasi bunkus before and it was a very novel dish. Everything from spicy, sour, salty things were wrapped up in a banana leaf with some rice and served to you. I wish the things in the banana leaf were a bit warmer. I feel like it was less authentic as the use of the leaf was more for presentation purposes vs steaming and cooking purposes. Our food was cold and the rice was dry. What gave this place 3 stars for me was the novelty of the flavors. Cardamom on meat and spicy jackfruit were things i had not tasted before. If Indonesian food was more accessible and I didn’t have to drive so far to taste it I probably would rate this place just 2 stars but because of the uniqueness of flavor and I’m still learning about this wonderful new cuisine they get 3 stars for tickling my taste buds.

it’s just alright and it took so long for ordering take out. I had to wait about 20 mins. for just one dish. The food doesn’t give me this craving feeling of wanting to have Indonesian food.

I tried the lontong cap go meh(chicken/beef curry with rice cakes) and it was pretty tasty. The portion is big for the $ 9 price and served for two meals. There’s a lot of things going on in that curry, so if you have any allergies or restrictions, do ask what they put in it. Minus one star for not being nice about giving extra bowls to share. :(

This is a great place to get nasi bungkus, nasi kuning, nasi mataram, nasi rames, ayam bakar, etc. Yes, I agree the price for each is high. 9 bucks each, but one can feed two people. The portion is big. Cendol is pretty good. $ 3.50 each. Shanghai Shaved Ice is also good. Not super sweet, which I like. $ 4.50 each. The lady is pretty friendly too! This is my spot to get nasi bungkus whenever I visit socal.

Inside the Hong Kong Plaza Food Court. empanada was yummy. the rice with jackfruit curry, chili fried egg, beef, something else wrapped in banana leaf was ok– it was pretty big. Too bad it wasn’t hot enough.

I thought this place was okay, very expensive in my opinion. The food, the dessert, the drinks, I think everything they have there is pricey. Their sio may Bandung and satay were probably their best dishes that I’ve tried.

First of all, I would like to make something clear… for the person who wrote the review thinking this is a «Filipino» restaurant, its actually Indonesian!!! Although I am an avid fan of Filipino food as well, Indonesian food and Filipino food are two different things so before you start writing bad reviews about this place, get your countries right… Now, as far as the food, I’m just going to make this short and sweet and I’ll just say this place comes very close to Indonesian home cooking. Although it is a little pricey, I feel its worth paying for if you want authentic Indonesian food in hearty portions. I live in San Diego but I come to West Covina quite often, sometimes just to have their food. So, for those who love Indonesian food but do not wish to cook it at home, this is the place you want to go to.

I can’t believe there’s almost no 5 stars given to this place, I came here a lot with my family, every time I always get VIP treatment from the owner or worker, once I went there and there were no place to sit, the owner called the guy who cleans the tables and asked him to set up a special table and chairs for us. ok, that’s for the service, now for the food, I’ve tried almost anything here except for the fish dishes cause I don’t eat fish, my favourite is soto betawi, nasi kuning, nasi mataram and siomay bandung, I honestly think the foods are consistently good, the bubur ayam is just okay, the dessert drink(es cendol) is also really good. This is the thing I don’t understand about some other reviewers, who cares who cooks your food, whether hispanics or filipinos or indonesians, as long as the food and the service is good, :P Overall I think you should try this place, especially if you’re indonesian, I don’t think it’s expensive at all considering the quality and the quantity of the foods you’re getting.

Finally!!! THEONLY Indonesian place that serves the best in the LA area!!! The place was originally called Satay Fong, but they changed it for some reason… Anyways, I thought their food was THE best, along with the sweet lady working behind the counter!!! Although I didn’t speak Indonesian, the lady still gave me the best service!!! Amid the empty crowds on a quiet Thursday morning, my uncle and his family, along with my family, decided to chow down on motherland’s eatery over Cantonese dim sum. Being that my uncle’s family came from Las Vegas, and that they hadn’t had motherland food for AGES, they ordered many as they can to chow down before departing LA. We had ordered some rice dishes, such as the Nasi Kuning, and well as the other rice dish that was wrapped in banana leaves. The Nasi Kuning was just right, with the right amount of spices in the yellow-colored rice. You can’t go wrong with its side dishes of Belado, beef, and chicken!!! Same goes with the other dish wrapped in banana leaves! My aunt tried it, and she was satisfied with it!!! I recommend these dishes for those coming to the place, and watch out for the big portions! And there was Bubur Ayam, which is Indonesian-style chicken porridge. It was a combination of chicken stock, salt, pepper, and other spices topped with shreds of chicken, colored Kerupuk(chips), and chili sauce. Another recommendation! I can’t forget dessert either. We all ordered many cups of Es Cendol, along with a giant bowl of Es Shanghai!!! The Es Cendol was a bit bland, thought, but the Es Shanghai can do!!! That, overall, brought all of us back to the Motherland. :)

Their nasi mataram(rice, chicken in green chilly, beef empal, eggs belado, vegetables /kangkung), for $ 9.50 is the equivalent of nasi pedes that I liked in Bali! So SPICY and GOOOOOD! I also loved their satay — both chicken and pork! I would like to try their nasi lumut next time =)

For Starters, this place is not all that great or cheap. I mean I was hungry, felt like eating something asian, and as everyone knows, there are not alot of asian places around west covina. Sure I could go to panda express but when i say asian food, I want to go to a restaurant that offers asian food and not food that only«white» people would order. For starters, the food court is mainly just philipino food hence the menus and everything else. This place is small and you sit in these tables that are made available in the center of the building Authentic you say? I say not really. There’s a window that allows you to look through the kitchen and you can see two hispanic people cooking your meal. Although it does not have to be philipino people cooking my food. I just find it fun My only regret is that after ordering food to-go, i nearly stood around the front, walking back and forth, and it seemed like either they didn’t know how to time manage or the food wasn’t cooked till ordered. Still, I’m trying to figure out whats taking so long. Pacing back and forth and wasting my time. I should have bought my backpack to do my homework. Price-wise this place is not all that reasonable. Everything on the menu is basically pricey for the portion they give. My meal came close to 8.50 after tax and all i got was a box with rice, 5 chopped lettuce(yes i counted), a side of satay sauce, and the 4 kabob chicken, and a juice box with tea. Hmmm, all that for nearly $ 9? You tell me if thats worth it. For an extra 3 – 4 dollars I could have had a REALMEAL. I do not like how Unilocal rates the price range. I mean when people se 1 «$», that doesnt necessarily mean this restaurant is cheap. I mean I could go to a really expensive restaurant and rate it the same as any fastfood restaurant just because i ordered water and not alcohol? or salad instead of a 15+ dollar steak? - Overall, if you are a big eater or love food and not a skinny person. I would rather go somewhere else. If they lower their prices $ 3 – 4 dollars to what its really worth, then i might go back even though the food is not all that great. My advice to you — Unless you are ackin for some philipino food. Then throw your money away

Very sweet and friendly lady runs this place. She took my order, gave me my food, checked if I liked the food and gave me containers for my leftover. I think I will be back to try the other stuff. Soto Betawi with rice, emping and sambal: I had better but I did enjoy it. Nasi kuning with telor balado(chili egg), ayam goreng(fried chicken), acar(spicy pickled cucumber), tahu buncis(tofu with green beans) and rendang(marinated beef): I really liked the fried chicken and acar. Free teh botol(sweet boxed tea) with each order. I saw other things on the menu that I would like to try next time. 3 stars. Kedai Nikmat’s ayam goreng is yummylicious!

So maybe I’m being a tiny bit generous with 4 stars. So what? I’d never tried Indonesian food before(even though my brother and sister are half-Indonesian) and the plate I ordered at Kedai Nikmat really knocked my socks off! I was going to order some kind of vegetarian dish but when I got to the counter the lady told us they had already sold out for the day. I thought this was kind of weird because it was only about noon on a weekend. You would think they’d plan that out better. I got the Nasi Kuning combo but I wasn’t in the mood for meat so I asked for a vegetarian version. This just meant that they wouldn’t include the piece of chicken, not a substitution for anything else… but they still charged me the same amount of money. Meh. I should’ve just ordered it as is and given my piece of chicken to someone else in my group. I LOVED the taste of the rice! It was similar in taste to if I had soaked plain rice in delicious yellow curry overnight. The vegetable dishes were tasty and I gobbled those up right away. I also really really loved the little cakes of fried(insert ingredients here).(I am obviously not well versed on Indonesian food sorry.) The cakes were salty and delicious. The most interesting item on the plate was definitely the hard boiled egg. I’m usually not a fan at all of hard boiled eggs but I loved this one, especially because it was smothered in hot sauce. I was definitely sweating and sniffling by the time I got through my meal. I only have 2 complaints. The first one being the price. I paid $ 9 for a combo plate which seems to me to be a little bit pricey for a food court setting. I DID get a ton of food on my plate though and even though I was hungover starving I wasn’t able to polish off everything. My biggest complaint is that the entire menu is decidedly NOT in English. If I didn’t have a native Indonesian speaker/reader with me I would’ve been clueless as to what to order or what I was even eating. There are some pictures up on the menu but they really don’t help much. Can’t say I’ll ever make that long trek out here from West L.A. again but if I find myself in the area I’ll definitely come back for some more.

don’t get me wrong– i almost always crave a taste of home [indonesian cooking, fsho!] but even my discerning tastebuds can’t be inspired by kedai nikmat. situated within hong kong plaza, this place is the other kiosk that specializes in food from the padang region of indonesia [this means lots of rich, hot, and spicy foods]. i wasn’t really sure what to get, but i decided to go with the nasi kuning combination. bottom line: i wasn’t impressed. for one thing, the entire dish depends on the quality of the rice. if the rice isn’t very good– the entire dish falls apart. in this case, it felt like the rice has been left out for a few days and then reused. this is not fried rice reused, i mean, stale tasting reused. dry rice? i don’t think so. even panda express has better rice :[ they topped the rice with a beef rendang [decent, but lacks a special kick to it], their asinan wasn’t particularly astounding, but their telor belado [spicy fried whole egg] was good. nice and spicy. their version of fried chicken was dry on the outside, but i guess it was marinated enough so the spices can still be tasted. at 9 dollars per styrofoam container, kedai nikmat’s combination is sort of expensive, as far as ‘food court’ meals go. personally, i think janty noodle [a few kiosks over] will probably give you better bang for your buck.

Yes, I’m Asian. No, I’m not indonesian. With that said, I wasn’t impressed with my Nasi Bungkus. The fried boiled egg was interesting. The banana wrapped rice was alright but seemed more like for decoration than it being steamed with the rice(looking from the texture of the leaf). If it was, it wasn’t done long enough. The Beef Rendang wasn’t tender enough to have it fall apart upon eating, something Anita said could be accomplished by cooking the meat for at least 5 – 6 hours. I wonder how many plates of this I can get in Indonesia for the $ 9 I paid for??? Hopefully Sato House will be open the next time we visit *shakes happy fists at Jenny B*.

Tried their nasi kuning, chicken satay and shiaomai bandung. Nasi kuning — the yellow rice was flavorful, but the rendang was dismal. Very chewy, not tender at all. The fried chicken was tasty but very dry. Telur belado(fried boiled egg with sambal) was okay. I liked how they had acar(pickled vegetables) in it and this chicken and long bean thing which I have no clue what the name is. I wouldn’t drive all the way out there for this food. Sam’s Nutrition in SGV has a bunch of this sort of food on Sundays which is far tastier than what Kedai Nikmat has to offer. Shiaomai — was so-so, my BFF’s aunt makes some delicious ones. The accompanying sauce was very good though. Satay — the young man polished the entire order claiming it was delicious. I didn’t like the peanut sauce, it lacked peanuty taste. We also got an es cendol which was nasty. Very very sickly sweet, not enough palm sugar and coconut milk and especially, ICE!!! Very bad!
