We stopped in at Watkins Glen State Park to walk the falls. It was such a cute town we started to look for lodging and extend our visit. NASCAR race had been happening so rooms were few. Luckily someone had checked out & we were able to get a room at this amazing little place right on the downtown strip. Room 11 was so cute, queen size bed, mini fridge & microwave. Best of all they have have an ice cream parlor downstairs so it smells like sugar cones. Who hates that? A room that smells like sugar cones? Better yet they have a small bar with beer & wine. Both with very good selections. Lots of local stuff but some of the majors for the faint of heart. We were there after NASCAR so they had additional hours. Piano player in the lounge & people singing along. Fun stuff.

We arrived much later than we expected, and the office was closed for the night, but the innkeeper was able to accommodate us, which we appreciated. Great location for walking to all that Watkins Glen has to offer(pretty much Rooster Fish and a few quaint shoppes, plus the harbor). We stayed in room 11, which is up under the eaves of the Greek Revival main house. One of us found it charming; the other found it dated. Charming: sleigh bed, marble-topped bedside tables, hobnail glass lamps, hints of old architecture, a general feeling of sleeping in the spare room at your maiden aunt’s house. Dated: wall-to-wall carpet, vinyl blinds, acoustical ceiling tiles, a general feeling of sleeping in the spare room at your maiden aunt’s house. Big drawback: the bathroom is not a room but an only partially walled-off corner of the bedroom. No door, and the walls stop short of the ceiling. Not for those who like a little privacy. Fortunately, there are a couple of comfortable chairs out in the hall for the temporarily banished. The room and the house were very clean and well maintained. The Colonial is a good value for the area.
