I went Tono with my son and really enjoyed it. The miso soup was hot and tasty. Dragon roll was delicious. We will go back again.

What a thoroughly underwhelming experience. Since we’re staying at the Omni hotel that’s about a block away, and it’s a cold day, we decided to head over to Tono Sushi for some nice, hot ramen and soup. This was a mistake. We were sat at a table with cushions on the floor, which was… authentic? That doesn’t bother me. But the fifteen-minute wait to even order food was ridiculous. Once we finally placed our orders, we proceeded to wait *45 minutes* for two bowls of ramen and one bowl of udon. And they were not worth the wait in the slightest. Ramen broth is supposed to be flavorful(and ours claimed to be pork bone flavored), but it just tasted like plain soup with some ramen noodles and meat in it. We each paid $ 2.50 extra for an egg in the ramen, only to find half a hard-boiled egg in each that didn’t blend into the broth. According to my friend, the meat in the udon was overcooked and unappetizing. Needless to say, we’re not coming back. Maybe they were understaffed, but that’s no excuse for the poor quality of the dishes we received.

Stick with the nigiri sushi. The maki is less than remarkable. An exception is the spicy tuna handroll.

Visited Tono Sushi during lunch break from a conference nearby. I had the #3 lunch special — 2 pieces of sushi, california rolls and a piece of shrimp tempura with noodles in a bowl. It was good. Not«the best» I’ve had, but I would re-visit to eat there in the future.

Happy hour was CLUTCH!!! This is by far one of the best happy hours in DC for sushi. I couldn’t believe how amazingly nice our server was for how busy she was. I am really surprised by the negative reviews here. For the volume of what the place serves times the quality– this happy hour is a serious must do. Highly recommend.

I went to Tono with a group of 5 this past week and really enjoyed the food. Being with a group we couldn’t make up our mind, and the restaurant was happy to present us with an omikase for our group. They delivered a delicious assortment of sushi for a very reasonable price. The members of our group who ordered sake were also very pleased with both the selection and price. They enjoyed a yuzu sake that our server recommended, and the price for that was amazingly low! The only thing that keeps this review from being five stars is the service. While it is for the most part ok, they seem to be stretched thin and you may not see your server for long stretches of time. They also seemed to be slightly confused with what to do with our group before eventually seating us upstairs.

I love the sushi that Tono serves; it’s extremely flavorful in my opinion. My last experience here forced me to write a new review; because everything else but the food was sub-par. My friends and I came here for dinner on the Saturday night that was Halloween… bad choice. We came with six people and found the wait to be a half hour, not an issue. First problem with Tono is they were ill equipped to handle the crowd and the hostess did not have a designated station. She was also spread far too thin, having to run between floors and at least once people tried to seat themselves. After finally getting a table, the next issue was the language barrier with the server who seemed to be spread thin and was running around. It caused confusion, as Tono at times does not use the paper order forms for sushi, but tonight they were, and a shortage of pens/pencils was also an issue. After finally ordering, it took 45 minutes to receive our food, and one order came wrong due to the communication issues from earlier. My friend was upset due to the wait and the screw up, but his order was comped, helping the situation. Food was great as expected despite the wait. I suspect the service on this night was a fluke, as most of the time during lunch Tono is fast, friendly, and delicious. I’ll be returning, hoping to write another review, but probably during lunch instead of dinner. Still delicious Sushi, just bad service on this visit.

Very great customer service and good quality food. I had the teriyaki chicken here and the taste is amazing. The texture of the chicken is perfect. There were no undercooked pieces. The one downside of this restaurant is the vegetables to me. I had asked for no veggies but it still came with it. I think they’re pickled. I didn’t like it very much and the juice seeped into my meal towards the end. Other than that I enjoyed my meal

The price was right and the service was good, but everything else was pretty meh. Ordered a lunch bento box with tempura vegetables/shrimp, chicken teriyaki, cucumber roll, shumai, etc. The entire thing came out barely lukewarm, the tempura was super greasy, and it wasn’t that appetizing as a whole. Basically everything on the menu that wasn’t sushi seemed to have been frozen and reheated rather than made fresh. We also tried a few different pieces of nigiri, and they tasted ok, but everything didn’t sit well with our stomachs a few hours later. Nothing severe thankfully, but this unfortunately wasn’t one of the better meals on our trip to DC.

Hard to say its a good dinner experience. To be honest, not a decent dinner might because I am a Asian man, we ordered the sushi dinner and udon noodle. So werid thing is that the bill has been filled with tip by the restaurant and even more than 15%(including the tax in tip). It this common to American guys?

This rating is for the sushi happy hour. I was very pleasantly surprised with the sushi, especially for $ 1 nigiri. The salmon, yellow tail, and snapper were all fresh. However, the tuna was poor quality. I also liked how fresh their ginger was. They also had a good beer and wine list. I’ll definitely be back again.

I love sushi so this place was pretty disappointing. Fish was fresh, and they were liberal with the roll size and sides of ginger, sauces, and wasabi. It was super bland though. The spicy tuna roll didn’t have any spicy sauce, or much flavor. The salmon was completely flavorless. Also ordered the veggie wontons, which were more flavorful, but seriously lacking. You get six pieces, but they’re all fried dough– one or two peas and a pea-sized potato inside. All in all, not worth it. Skip it.

I keep wanting to reviews of places I eat during my travels but I always go «meh, I will go grab a beer and write it later» but I wake up the next morning being too apathetic. So here’s to the hope that is the first of many. This sushi place was located really close to the hotel I am staying at in D.C. I walk in right when Happy Hour ended(7:30) and the deals looked pretty good($ 1 per piece of sushi and fairly average beer prices). I was in the mood for sushi so I decided to go in. The interior was really spacious for sushi bar standards. No tables jammed up next to the bar or trying to overstuff the bar with more seats than it can accommodate. Ordered the Sushi Dinner($ 22, picture attached). I was hoping it would be two pieces of sushi per fish variety but it was just one which made it feel a little light. On top of that the rice was fairly dry and the fish felt like they have been left out a bit too long, too. If my bill was half the amount I paid and my drink came before my meal, instead of after, my meal would have been merely unmemorable as opposed to slightly terrible. I won’t be coming back here next time I am in D.C.

Tono provides a value meal for those looking for an affordable and quick eat, but there are probably better options in the area. I came to Tono’s with a friend after a visit to the National Zoo – it was hot and steamy that day and the zoo was full of kids. Needless to say, our appetites were raring to go. We both ordered the #1 Lunch Bento Set, which was $ 10 before tax. The set includes(1) chicken teriyaki,(2) shrimp/veggie tempura,(3) cucumber roll,(4) shrimp shumai, and(5) miso soup. Overall, the meal was unremarkable and had both good and bad components. The chicken teriyaki was plentiful, but the meat was somewhat bland and was only flavorful after being drenched in a very salty brown sauce. The tempura tasted fresh and crispy, but word to the wise: you get one piece of shrimp and then various pieces of veggies. The cucumber roll(six pieces) was decent but nothing special. Same with the miso. The shumai was probably the worst part — the dumplings were lukewarm and mushy. I could barely taste any shrimp. If I hadn’t been so hungry and desperate, I probably would have passed over Tono’s for another option.

What a cute restaurant! The happy hour deals are completely worth it. I feel like if my friend and I didn’t already eat maybe an hour earlier we easily could’ve ordered more sushi than we had at that sit-in. Apparently, there’s an off-menu item called the Obama roll and it looked soo good(despite the awkward association.) but we were too full by then. Not all the sushi pieces were mind blown delicious, but it was such a cute atmosphere, I liked it.

This sushi spot is a cozy little stop for those near the woodly park/Washington zoo area. The sushi here is tasty and the service is friendly and fast. I was greeted with a warm smile and a quick hello. I love when a restaurant makes you feel welcomed. My friend and I stopped by this restaurant during happy hour. My friend and I sat outside in the patio eating area. It was the perfect day for that! The beauty of the outside air put me in the mood for a happy hour session…(Oh. My.) The happy hour special is off the wall! It is cheap eats for sure. You can get one sushi piece for one dollar on a select menu selection. I ordered an array of sushi pieces. The one that stuck out to me was the eel. I felt that their eel had a very fishy aftertaste. I was not too pleased with that. However, all the other pieces were a mouthful of sushi heaven. As far as the happy hour goes, there is no clear and distinct happy hour menu. Thus, I noticed that it can get a little confusing. However, ask for a small house sake. It is only $ 4. The small sake has a total of four and a half sake shots. I like to order my sake warm. But be warned, if you order your sake warm, the flavors are more potent and strong. The alcohol flavor really overrules the rice flavor. So if you are not a sake lover, go for the chilled sake. Chilled sake will go down a lot smoother than the warm sake. Finally, did you also know they have a secret menu. You can order the Obama roll. Yes, i said it, the Obama roll. And yes, like our president. This place is truly a surprise discovery for me. When I found this place, I was not even in the mood for sushi. But, I am sure glad I stopped by this restaurant. I will be coming back forever. It’s safe to say that they have a life long customer.
