Food was good. HOWEVER there was ONE person working on a Saturday morning. He was serving, taking orders AND cooking! No ownership on site. No other employees! We waiting 55 minutes for breakfast! The poor guy had to turn people away! Too bad the ownership could care less about customer service.

Walking into this place smells, looks, and feels like walking into a warming home. Everyone was more than pleased with there meals. I ordered the fried catfish with mashed potatoes and a side salad. That cat fish was great.

The owner is so so nice and the food is amazing! The price is also very reasonable. I definitely suggest trying the fried chicken. It takes 20 min but it is well worth the wait. All of the sides are also delicious!

Honestly this place was absolutely perfect. The good was down right delicious and there a bar attached so I could have my Irish coffee too. Love it and will be back

Got the chicken fried steak for breakfast. Was a sizeable portion with nice and crispy breading. Everything was cooked perfectly to order. Didn’t have to eat until dinner time. Coffee was the onky weak point of the meal. Will make sure to brave the catfish or frog legs next time.

Stopped in for supper. Very local, unassuming atmosphere. Yes, some have noted short comings with the décor, but I came to eat. Ordered fish & chips; husband ordered fried chicken. Mid-week — we got a table for 2. The collards are the best I have ever tasted. Fish & chips came with slaw & was crispy & tasty. Word on the chicken was less than fabulous. In fact, it was mediocre at best. Must say, though, many people were ordering it and seemed pleased with it. Guess it’s an individual thing. Glad we tried it, but I think next time we’ll select another venue.

Not my cup of tea… I’m confident that if you are home-sick for southern comfort food, this might be your place. Food was OK, staff(I assume owner/proprietor) was friendly. For me the menu was limited and uninviting. The restaurant was dingy, the carpeting looks like it hasn’t been cleaned in many years. I wish I had liked it, but for me it didn’t make the cut. I won’t be returning. PS: my companion tried the catfish based on the owners recommendation and he stated it was VERYGOOD

First the good: The owner? I loved him to pieces. Super charming guy. If I was going to rate this place on service, it’d get five stars. I really do hate writing the rest of this review, because I liked him so much. This place is a dive and not in a cool funky way, but in the way that you’re worried the table or chair is going to collapse if you look at it the wrong way kinda way. It was dimly lit, but I’m not sure if it would have done the place any favors. It’s old. It looks it and it feels it. In and of itself, it could be overlooked. Some of my favorite places to eat have been utter dives. The food: Something called«American Bean Soup» was pretty good, even though it was — admitted — three soups from earlier in the week he had combined. Fried okra, super tasty for an appetizer, though husband was disappointed it wasn’t an option for a side item. Husband had the fried catfish, which was the reason we visited this place to start with. It was a generous portion and«pretty okay», though he raved about the beans. I had the jambalaya. I honestly don’t have anything particularly nice to say about it. While not raised in Louisiana myself, I have a very close friend, who was born and raised in Louisiana, and I think she’s spoiled me. The flavor was ok, but there was no texture left to any of it, While I could pick out individual ingredients, it was just a mélange of mush by the time it hit my plate. I really, really wanted to like this place after all of the reviews. We had a favorite place for cajun and creole food where we just moved from and were excited to find a potential replacement for it, with Mama’s Kitchen, but I believe we’ll keep looking.

The fried okra is out of this world! Great blues music in the background with food prepared as you are an honored guest…

For breakfast I had the catfish with eggs and grits with cheese and my wife had the eggs benedict. Keep in mind I’m a PNW local and have only eaten in «the south» once so I’m no expert in what it’s supposed to taste like but… the catfish was amazing!!! Nice thick fillets that were obviously fresh. A super thin cornmeal coating and fried until just done, leaving the fish moist, flaky, and succulent. The service was friendly and quick with a great attitude. Next time I want to try the frog legs and eggs for breakfast. We live about an hour away so we can’t visit here often, but the next time I’m in Vancouver I know where I’m eating!

TL;DR this place is worth your time the food and service is top notch. So; this place used to be the gold rush, which is probably why we didn’t know it was here. Saw some reviews on Unilocal and on a lark headed over. So so so glad we did. First Joseph is incredibly sweet! As the owner it’s not often you get to meet your tables, it made for a great feeling to have a chat with him about how he opened the place. Next up the FOOD. Sweet Jesus that jambalaya is delicious. My man got some meatloaf and said it was great. The collards greens are legit! Like ham bone in legit. So so good! The ambiance is a bit strange as it is still left over from the days of the gold rush but look past that. It’s weird with the adjacent bar but, seriously; the food and service make this place a must try. Keep an open mind and leave happy!

I really like this place. 1) Light, flavorful fried catfish– it was not greasy or heavy. 2) Great service 3) They have fried okra. 4) Joseph(owner) is fun to talk to. 5) We were there right before closing and Joseph switched the TV to ‘Talking Dead’- eating a great meal while watching TWD recaps– YESSS!

This place is rough on the outside, but packs a punch that matches your«grits» ty feel. The cook and staff are sweethearts. I recommend the bacon because it was the best bacon I have ever had. The pork chops were very delicious. If you don’t like a lot of gravy than ask for it on the side. They have a relationship with the bar next door so bottoms up! The baked beans are very good and if you can get the collard greens get em(they sell out quick). Perfect place for family and to watch the game. You will smell like your food so be prepared to do laundry and take a bath — but it is worth your water bill increase for a taste of the south in Vancouver!

After a lot of debate, I have decided on four stars instead of five. I know, I’m sorry, but the atmosphere was just meh. I understand that it’s supposed to be a New Orleans themed, but when you go in, it’s a bit off-putting. BUT, the service and food is the best. Incredible. Best food in downtown. The owner here is one of my favorite people in the food industry, and always love coming to support him. I came in with a group of 9 and we all had separate checks, and he didn’t have any problem. He just thought that it was great that we all came in. Thank you, sir, you’re amazing. TL;DR: If you don’t mind a little bit of a small, messy atmosphere, I highly recommend.

The fact that restaurants like this exist makes my heart(and tummy) so, so happy. To put it simply, Mama’s Kitchen offers absolutely amazing food in an unassuming atmosphere. Not only is the food here absolutely delicious, but the service and general vibe of the restaurant is also excellent! Although I’ve only stopped in here once, Mama’s Kitchen is definitely somewhere that I could see myself eating once or twice a week. During my visit, I ordered pork chops w/mashed potatoes($ 11) and my boyfriend ordered the«Junk In Trunk Burger»($ 15). Both were absolutely delicious! Although I often say that my mom makes the best pork chops ever, Mama’s Kitchen is definitely in the running for that top spot. My pork chops were seasoned excellently and cooked to perfection. In addition, the meat was super juicy, tender, and had the perfect amount of fat in it as well. My sides of mashed potatoes, beans, and toast were also really delicious, though I wish that the mashed potatoes came with white gravy instead of brown gravy. Nonetheless, I continually told my boyfriend how amazing my dinner was between bites before wiping my plate clean! I also took a few bites of the«Junk In Trunk Burger» and found myself further impressed. For starters, this burger is huge! It comes with two ½ pound patties, two slices of Swiss, three cheddar, grilled peppers & onions, lettuce & special sauce on four pieces of grilled Texas toast. Super tasty, super bomb, and super filling. Seriously, super filling– for every bite I nabbed, I instantly felt more full: p As a side note, both of these dishes came with our choice of a side. We both ended up getting the soup(French onion) and both of us agreed that this was one of the best French onion soups we’ve ever tasted. I’m really hoping to revisit Mama’s Kitchen soon and try out some of their other dinner specials/breakfast menu(which is served all day!) PS: The cook here is really friendly and seems to really enjoy what he does. I love it!
