If you are a grad student, Green Bar is one of the best bars in Tuscaloosa. Live music is their«thing», and they get some great acts. I have seen everything from Widespread cover bands to punk rock there. The drinks are cheap and possibly a half step better than at other nearby options. The bartenders at least seem to have a repertoire that goes beyond basic well drinks. Cover is usually free, but never outrageous. It’s not a «nice» bar, by any means, but had plenty of funky local flavor. My one complaint is the smoke. If you are a non smoker, you will leave this establishment with red, watery eyes and(smoker or not) hair that smells like an ashtray for days. However, until Tuscaloosa enacts a smoking ordinance, I’m sure this bar and others will continue allowing smoking inside just to compete.

It’s a nice, little, and very simple venue. Tables and chairs are closer to the entrance and around the bar. The stage can be seen from the entrance but it’s towards the back. There is $ 3 cover on nights that there are live performances. The crowd is very laid back and people are dancing past midnight and love the music. I really enjoyed the crowd more than the music. People know how to dance and have fun without getting ratchet.

I’m not from Tuscaloosa and I have no affiliation with the university or their athletics. That being said, the people there were cool and actually talked about things other than football and what happened at the last bar or party. I will emphasize that despite being toned-down and looking like the sort that are usually at odds with administration, authority, and football, they still seemed to have lots of school/football spirit. So, if you’re an out-of-towner like me, be careful with what you say when making jokes, etc. The staff was really nice and helpful. Music was good and the food next door at their sister restaurant was good. I really appreciated that they have original bands and stuff other than the usually college jam-band fare. I think they do that too, but there’s a mix. Had a great night there.
