This is a nice, clean mini-Macy’s. And if you wear normal-size women’s clothing you can probably find a nice selection. But I’m a plus size(size 18 – 20). They have pushed the plus size into a tiny corner behind maternity. Most of the clothing are basic, no-name brands. Today, I noticed that almost every single blouse had glitter/sequins on the chest. Seriously? Why would their buyer think that every plus size woman wants a bedazzled bosom? There are no mannequins to offer outfit ideas, no matching accessories, no cash register, no clerk. It’s very disappointing.

Guess what, everyone? I’m getting married! As a couple that’s older than normal for their first wedding, we’ve taken the laid back approach to wedding planning. In fact, since we have plenty of nice household items, we weren’t planning on registering for wedding gifts. And then all the questions starting rolling in about where we were registered and why we weren’t and all sorts of things, so we went to Macy’s to register. This Macy’s is small, but what it lacks in inventory, in makes up for in Marlene. She’s the Wedding Gift Registry Bridal Consultant who reigns supreme in the gifts section of Macy’s. My fiancé and I weren’t interested in meeting with a consultant(see the bit about«laid back approach» above), but Marlene found us when we were trying to figure out what kind of rice cooker we were. It took Marlene about five minutes to convince me and my(much more stubborn) fiancé why registering was important. More than just running your registry list, Macy’s does so much for the registered couple and Marlene was our guide to it all. We received guides, advice, coupons, a Dream card, ways to earn cash back on items we buyand items purchased for us. Marlene explained that Macy’s wanted to develop a life long relationship with us – and it’s working. Marlene was wise enough to know when to leave us to our own devices and when to step in with advice. She was knowledgeable about everything and, the one time she couldn’t, she spent the next fifteen minutes hunting down the answer, even though we weren’t too concerned about it. She was honest and excited for us– everything you want to find in the person you’re depending on for guidance in designing your future household. We’ve always loved Macy’s, but we love Marlene even more. She’d be invited to the wedding if it wasn’t several states away. Thank you, Marlene!

Nothing much has changed at this Macy’s… But, I feel it is deserving of an update. I have now purchased three winter coats at this Macy’s. The selection is huge, and the top brands are often 50 percent off. My most recent score is a leather collared black Calvin Klein coat. Original price: $ 325 Half off: $ 162.50 Mom’s coupons — another $ 40 off. So I got this fresh new coat for about $ 125. Pretty good to me, I’ve already worn it about 25 times and it fits like a glove. Somehow I am always finding great CK, Michael Kors coats here. Wait for a sale! Even in early winter they exist!

Grand Traverse Mall is terrible. This Macy’s is terrible. Only worth it in moments of desperation.

On this fine day my mother needed assistance from the makeup counters, Brenda at Clinique was super. Makeup, especially that found in department stores, runs expensive but it’s of decent quality. I am more of a drugstore fiend but my mother is more particular and employed so she can manage it on occasion. The clearance racks can occasionally be a good place for bargains, for example 30 or 40% off, plus an additional 15% off if you use your store specific charge card.
