My husband and I stopped by this place(around 11 pm on a Wed) while on a cross country trip. We were pleasantly surprised. It’s about 5 – 10 minutes off of I-70, so it wasn’t at all far out of the way. I fully expected it to be a complete dive bar. But it wasnt. It wasn’t anything fancy either, but they had good food at a decent price. Seems like a local hangout with a handful of regular customers. If I lived here, I would frequent it often. We were tended to within minutes of sitting at a booth and food arrived pretty quickly. We were able to take care of the bill promptly and get back on the road.

Was there for over an hour before my food arrived. The place is cool, has a dive bar scene but having to wait that long for a hot dog and basic burger is ridiculous. Figure it out, huh?

Just driving through from Chicago. My husband has been a vegetarian for several decades. He said that This was one of the best veggie burger he has had… very good. I had the junior burger… like Mom’s. Great selection craft beers.

Friendly and fast, good food and drink at a reasonable price, and attentive staff equal a great place for sandwiches, burgers and beer in central Terra Haute. The décor is nothing special with simple hard flooring, formica tables, vendor provided wall trimmings, and a few TVs. The beer selection, however, was excellent and the prices fair. I had two IPAs, one draft and one can, both from local breweries in the $ 4.50 to $ 6 an American pint(16 ounces — the Brits know how to pour an «Imperial» pint, coming in at 20 ounces) range. We had a burger and patty melt, both weighing in at ½ pound o’ beef with all the trimmings(minus fries) in the $ 6.50 to $ 8.50 range(depending on additions(bacon, cheese, etc). The burgers were succulent, juicy, and perfectly medium well, just the way we like them. A side of fries(or tots) will set you back $ 1.69($ 2.99 for cheese fries/tots), arriving piping hot and crispy, not burnt. The service was top notch. Our server was friendly and attentive, neither hovering nor invisible, catering to our every need. The bartender was superb, greeting us when we arrived, offering drink menu, and stopping by our table to ensure we were informed and happy. Two burger equivalents with fries, two premium beers and a soft drink set us back $ 33 plus tip, not a bad deal no matter where you dine. Well done Charlie’s! Don’t judge a book by its cover when it comes to this place. Friend staff and great food. I had a burger and it was good stuff! Will be back!

We were passing through Terre Haute around the time the 2016 Kentucky Derby was running, and were looking for a cool out-of-the-way sports bar where we could watch it. This place had several good reviews on Unilocal and sounded like a perfect venue. First the good news: The Tweety burger I had was amazing. Perfectly cooked and seasoned. Fresh toppings. A+. Highly recommended. Second the bad news: Lots of problems. — Very weak pours on the mixed drinks. — None of the TVs were in HD. Sure, they were widescreen, but the standard def made them look almost out of focus. — The worst problem was that for whatever reason the management would not turn up the sound for the derby coverage, including the actual running. We sat and watched in silence. Really? — Finally, not the best neighborhood in town. Our server apparently got tired of our asking about these things and was replaced by one of the male bartenders. By that time the derby was over, we were resigned to very weak drinks and were about done. Sure, pal, everything is fine. Bring us our check. This is a clean neighborhood bar tucked away in a transitional neighborhood. They were packed by the time we left, so they’re doing something right. Maybe the quality of the kitchen keeps them afloat. It’s not the mixed drinks or the service. The next time we’re passing through we’ll go somewhere else.

Nice atmosphere, excellent staff. Ordered a to go order, bought drinks, and played pool while we waited. The food was excellent and very nicely priced. The veggie burger was one of the best veggies burgers I’ve had and the chipotle ranch was excellent. My only complaint is that the garden salad was only lettuce and tomatoes. Other than that, we loved it.

The only reason I don’t give this place 5 stars is because I never give 5 stars. There is no such thing as perfect and always room for improvement. That being said, I travel for a living. I eat out every single night so when I get to a new place I always do a search for whatever I am looking for. I have been to Terra Haute several times on business, but had never heard of Charlie’s. I did a search for«Best Burger in Terra Haute» and Charlie’s was top of the list. I can not honestly say I have eaten everywhere in this city, but rest assured there is no reason to go ANYWHERE else in Terra Haute for a burger. I had the Jalapeño Tweedy just like they make it. The Jalapeño slices are fried, the buns are buttered and toasty, the meat perfectly cooked and the cheese was melted and awesome. The perfect word is FRESH! You could tell from the first bite that these were not frozen patties. They know what they are doing. The Beer Selection is Extensive, the Bar Tenders Friendly and Chatty. I Love the Place. I am sure that other things on the menu are just as good as the Burgers, but sometimes ya just need a Burger and Charlie’s Pub and Grub is the place to go for that in Terra Haute.

I am not a beer drinker and really think it’s kinda nasty, but you don’t have to drink beer there even though they have a large selection of beers to choose. I kinda like mixed drinks like Screwdrivers. Charlie’s is a nice place with good food for what I think are reasonable prices. Try the Tweety burger; I don’t think that you will be disappointed. The outside seating is fun when the weather is good. It’s a relaxing, casual place to go and eat and just sit and waste time when you have time to waste.

I’ve been in a few times since my review in June so I thought I would update. First, I have noticed a serious improvement in the speed of service. Maybe it’s because I haven’t been in at particularly busy times, but the last two or three visits have made me feel like the owners/managers are really working on this. Your concerns are being heard, Unilocalers! Second, they now serve BREAKFASTALLDAY and have biscuits and gravy EVERYDAY. You should rejoice because their biscuits and gravy is delish. Seriously, I now understand why it was always sold out on the days it was offered. I really flavorful, thick, meat-heavy gravy with lots of pepper to it. The biscuits are good, too. A half order is plenty of food to feel satisfied. Last time I ordered it with tater tots and was glad I had my partner to split them with. I had a breaded tenderloin sandwich here recently, too. The tenderloin was large and delicious. It had great seasoning in the breading. Sure, it’s mostly standard bar fare but the quality is always good. I don’t think I’ve ever eaten anything I disliked here. Charlie’s is becoming one of my go-to Saturday brunch places!

Best burgers around. They have a good beer selection as well. Service was a little slow but we were enjoying our drinks so it wasn’t a problem. We will definitely be back.

I know that I have written a review here before and I know the food is great but the service that I experienced tonight is AWFUL. I have been waiting for 40 minutes since sitting down and have yet to get my drink. I understand that I’m here during the rush of dinner time but I’m STILL waiting for my drink. The poor girl that is suppose to be serving out table is new and has no clue what is even on the menu. I’m just disappointed because I really go like the food here but the service makes me never want to come here again. And to top it off we brought friends that just moved into terre haute and I doubt that they will come back here again. Charlie’s is an okay spot for a bite to eat. The staff was friendly and attentive and the food wasn’t too bad for a sports bar. There was an old timer at the bar when we walked in who seemed like he was giving us the eye for quite some time. What’s with the glares, dude? I had the pot roast melt sandwich which was a bit flat — missing most of the pot roast aromas and flavors that I expect. I even took out some of the meat to try to taste it separate from the rest of the sandwich, but it lacked the long-cooked buttery quality that a good pot roast ought to have. The fries and such were just fine, nothing spectacular. Also, it seems like this is one of those places where you can’t avoid having a television in your line-of-sight. Some people might find that entertaining, but I find it distracting.

We found Charlie’s through Unilocal as we were passing through on our way home to Colorado. It’s tucked into a neighborhood, a bit away from I-70. They have their own parking lot, which was nice since we didn’t have to hunt for an on-street parking spot. They’ve got a decent selection of beers in bottles and on draft, so most everyone should find something. My wife and I both tried tweety burgers, and can vouch for their tastiness! She had the original Tweety, which comes with fried pickle slices on it. I had the jalapeño Tweety where the fried pickles are replaced with deep fried and battered jalapeño slices. The fries are also good! Give it a try!
