Eons ago this was a real outfitters store, where you could buy packs, and mountaineering supplies, backpacking supplies, and rafting gear. I bought my first climbing gear here as well as my first nalgene bottle(that’s still being used after all these years) but that is all gone now. Taos Mountain Outfitters is nothing more than a high end clothing boutique. If that’s what your looking for then venture in and enjoy. If your looking for a true outfitters store beware and look elsewhere.

Nice store. With good selection of casual clothing and footwear. Low key staff makes for a pleasant experience. You get what you need

I love this store. I always go there first when I want a new pair of shoes. Great customer service, great merchandise!

Taos Mountain Outfitters, I wanted to be a customer, but you let me down! I came in on the morning after the season’s first big snow on Sunday, November 16, looking for some boots to carry me through my 2-week visit to Taos. I hovered around the shoe area while an employee(manager?) was on the phone. She was speaking loud enough that I could hear that it was not a work call(«I should get off the phone now, I have customers»), but she continued to chat for at least 5 more minutes. After an awkward length of time of me just sitting, staring at the footwear, I left the store and headed over to the Big 5 Sporting Goods, where I was quickly helped and scored an inexpensive pair of fisherman’s boots. I’m still giving TMO3 stars because your selection of merchandise seemed really great, but I was really disappointed in your customer service.

Best service I have ever received at a retail store. My husband and I were visiting Taos on a long weekend. We went in to just browse. I have been casually looking for a woman’s camping back-pack for hike-in camping. I am petite and had not been able to find the right pack even at some of the big box sporting stores. The lady fitted me for three packs — which is very time consuming. The last one fit. She spent the time to show me how to use my pack and all of it’s capabilities and not in an annoying sales person way, because by that time it was obvious I was buying it. I was so impressed. My husband found a pair of boots he liked and asked her a few questions about them and she was honest and told him they are meant for fashion, not hiking(which is what he thought, but, man, they just looked really cool). On top of that, they were having a sale, so I ended up buying a higher quality, larger capacity pack than I expected to for far less money than I expected to purchase the lower quality/lower capacity pack. Don’t be afraid to ask questions — these ladies have the answers.

My husband and I went in for a small purchase(new hiking socks). The manager was incredibly nice and helpful. She also made some hiking and restaurant suggestions. Seemed to have a good selection of gear for hiking and camping. Definitely worth checking out if you need anything while in Taos.
