This is by far and away the best traditional Japanese sushi in the State. My wife and I have been coming to Sushi Tama for eighteen years, and in all that time I have never had a meal that was less than wonderful. This is traditional Japanese sushi, so if you are looking for the latest crunchy-deep-fried-cream-cheese-bug-eyed-monster-roll, just keep on looking. Sushi Tama’s menu could have been borrowed from a Tsukiji sushi house. Fresh, high quality fish, simply but exquisitely prepared. Sit at the bar, drink cold beer, chat with the Chef, and enjoy the best sushi that you have ever had.

OMG. I went there to eat sushi because my friends recommended this place. However, I felt disappointed about my dinner. I had to wait long. They served not quick. They put too much rice in sushi. They fried salmon skin and other too mucj that makes them burned and taste bitter. I wont come back again…

This is by far the best sushi restaurant in Pierce County! We go here at least once a week, and it is always perfect! I have eaten at well over 50 sushi places, and Tama Sushi is the best! Always fresh, always done perfectly!

I am blown away! The sushi rice is incredibly spectacular! I couldn’t use enough adjectives to describe how happy I am that this delicious place is near our first house. Even though I am not eating fish due to being pregnant, their California roll cured my need for sushi despite usually being all about sashimi. The prices were really great, and I was able to speak a little bit of the Japanese I know because the staff is from Japan.

This small restaurant is just right for a date night. The sushi was fresh and delicious and the waitress was courteous and attentive. We enjoyed the little appetizer she brought out before our food and had a wonderful time talking over tempura and Spider roll.

Sushi Tama is a favorite for our family. We frequent Sushi Tama about every other week, if not every week and are never disappointed with the service or quality of food they provide every time. My grandparents lived in Japan for over 20 years and I grew up eating authentic sushi. There is no other restaurant in Tacoma that serves such authentic Japanese food, that is fresh and the service friendly every time. I enjoy coming here and seeing their smiling faces!

The décor and ambiance at first glance needs some improvement BUT the service is exquisite. The waitresses are polite, prompt, and very attentive. The man who makes the sushi is very funny, I recommend sitting at the table to watch him. He makes great recommendations and the best part? I used to never eat sushi solely because I can’t eat seaweed and many places in leu of seaweed use rice paper and at an extra charge. Here, they can make any kind of sushi sans seaweed! And they bring many extras(small appetizer, salad, and soup) with your entrée.

I stopped here for dinner about a week ago. I am sorry to say I can’t recommend it. The sushi was made right in front of me but lacked the freshness I have seen in other sushi restaurants. It was okay but not great. The salad was good. The service was nice. I would not plan on going back. I have yet to find a great sushi restaurant in the area. Please drop me a note if you know of one.

Was serviced promptly upon arrival. Sushi was fresh and made to order. The Ikura were like little joys popping in my mouth. Hot tea and water were constantly refilled. The calamari was so-so. Other than the calamari, I would totally eat here again.

Hands down the best sushi in Tacoma(not saying much I must say). The variety, particularly for vegetarians, is great. The restaurant offers several different roll combinations in addition to inari sushi(which, believe it or not, is not common in Tacoma). The menu in general was very accommodating to vegetarians which also is rare among Japanese places in Tacoma. The soybean and seaweed appetizer that comes with all orders is tasty as well, and something we haven’t had at any other Japanese restaurants yet. The venue itself is fairly small and can get busy. Overall, the place is traditional when it comes to Japanese food, not necessarily innovative; however, it does offer more options and variety than most.

Overall, I had a great experience at Sushi Tama. Upon entering, my party of 3 was greeted and seated promptly. Initially, there were only a couple other parties there, but over the course of my meal many more people showed up. It’s a smaller sized restaurant, and you would think it would get loud from a nearly full house, but somehow a peaceful, relaxed atmosphere is maintained, with noise levels very well managed. Food came out at a reasonable time, with the initial dish being a salad with some special dressing. I found it to be delicious! The miso soup was also very tasty. The waitress was extremely polite and demonstrated great service, being quick to refill water without asking. The only reason I’m not giving a full 5⁄5 stars is because I thought the prices were a bit high for the portion sizes. I got the assorted sashimi entrée with sushi rice underneath. For $ 22, I expected a few more pieces of sashimi. That said, the quality was fantastic and it tasted great.

This is my favorite kind of restaurant, a non franchise mom and pop like shop with great food and service. The quality, portions and price were just right. I am definitely going back. My son and I ordered sushi, and my wife ordered tempura shrimp. The sushi was great, the rice did not fall apart and was so well plated that I almost didn’t want to use soy sauce and wasabi for fear of muddling with the chefs work. The tempura was nice and not too greasy, made with fresh oil and was good and crunchy. The miso soup and the soy based salad was really good and unique.

This is my mine and my husband favorite place for sushi! We love having a date night here and have been eating here for a few years now. The sushi is so fresh and delicious every time, our favorite is the rainbow roll. The staff and service is also excellent every time we have been. The only place for good sushi in our opinion. :)

First time here and I’ll come back again. I stopped in for a quick snack, just ordered a tuna roll and a couple of pieces of hamachi. The rice had good flavor and was not over cooked. I always appreciate good sushi rice! I sat at the counter and talked a little with the chef who was very willing to discuss his sushi. The service was good and friendly and was prompt. It is a small place but nice and comfortable. I’ll definitely go back.

One of the few Japanese Sushi places in the area(most others are Korean, a slightly different style). They also have natto!

Ok so I’ll start by saying I rarely give anywhere a 5 star rating. The service at this place is impeccable. Usually just one waitress and one sushi master working, they serve up a meal like no other. Located on 6th Ave across from Valhalla coffee, Tama Sushi is open for lunch then closes again until supper at 5. I always order the gyoza appetizer, a pork filled pouch, steamed not fried, then served w sauce. The waitress is soooooo hospitable. She’s more than that. she remembers faces and pays attn to detail. I took my mom here while she was visiting from out of town. Having never had sushi or used chopsticks, our waitress quickly noticed and broght her a fork, which was appreciated. My fave sushi roll here is the spicy tuna, however the roe here is delectable as well. Other favorites include the rainbow roll and the tekka maki. I order the chicken teryaki, which comes w miso soup, salad and rice. They also serve a complimentary bean paste(sounds wierd but delicious). Our bill was around 40 $ for 2 ppl, including appetizer, soup, salad, sushi and a huge meal, as well as hot green tea. Love this place.

A friend and I enjoyed a terrific lunch here. My friend is a vegetarian, and I’m an omnivore(comes from traveling all over China…). The lunch menu had plenty of offerings for both of us. He had the veg tempura and the homemade tofu– both dishes were excellent. I had the gyoza special and the udon yaki with pork. The gyoza was great, the pork slightly overcooked. I’d definitely order the veg tempura and some of the rolls on my next visit. Our service was excellent, very polite and friendly. I’ll definitely be back soon. Sushi Tama’s location across the street from Valhalla makes it possible to have your after lunch coffee across the street.
