Ruddy and Dean

Was supposed to go to a different restaurant in the area but they were having a party so had to used Unilocal to find an alternative for lunch and happen to found this place. Upon entering you can see their aged steaks in their version of the meat locker. The restaurant was almost completely empty so we had options of sitting at a normal table or booth. We opted to sit at the booths.
We decided to share a field greens salad to start and for entrees we had ruddy burger with mushrooms and swiss cheese, and dean’s steak sandwich with a side of onion rings. The field greens were fresh and the vinaigrette was a little on the sweet side but was tasty. The ruddy burger was better than an average burger. Was juicy and flavorful. Dean’s steak sandwich tasted almost like a philly cheesesteak sandwich. The onion rings were just nasty. Do not order that. Tasted like cheap carnival quality batter. Tasted really oily. Ate a few piece and tossed the entire order.
Overall, it was a decent restaurant in the area. A good burger and steak sandwich. Onion rings was nasty and I was actually kind of disgusted by it. They kind of try to be a high end steakhouse but I feel like their food quality is not there yet.

I have been to Ruddy and Dean’s multiple times and each time I love it more and more. The service is amazing and the food is even better. Right when you walk in, you feel invited and comfortable. Definitely a steakhouse for anyone!

It’s disappointing when your experience is so different than others. The service here was terrible. My cowboy steak was tasteless hard and fake looking. Won’t go back

Just stopped in for a quick beer before jumping on the ferry. I got to talking with Tom the bartender he made me feel like I was a regular within 10 mins I was ordering their lunch sirloin with fries and an ice cold Stella. Great choice so if your ever by the ferry and want good conversation an ice cold beer and a steak come down and see the guys at Ruddy & Dean

We went for dinner last night for the first time. The service was incredibly slow and each member of the staff was wearing many hats. The hostess was also the bartender, etc. I could not really justify the slow pace either because they were not that busy and there were many empty tables. Our meal took two hours and we did not have coffee or dessert. The food was okay but nothing special. I will not be returning.

For Staten Island, this place deserves more recognition! The atmosphere and décor is nice and cozy. They have a huge wine menu as well as a good beer menu. The steaks were delicious. My New York Strip came out perfect! My girlfriend had a Filet Mignon and she said it was delicious as well. It was cooked to our preference perfect! They have some seafood on the menu which I’m sure is awesome also. I highly recommend this place before going anywhere else in the city.

By far the best steak on the island, everything is great here but my personal fav is the cowboy ribeye! Staff is awesome, I’ve always felt welcome here. This place NEVER disappoints. Craft beers, great cocktails, exceptional food nice atmosphere and if your interested in a party… the room upstairs is perfect! Threw my mother a surprise birthday here years ago and I’ve been coming back since. I Love everything about this place!

Ruddy is THE steak house to go to on Staten Island. My family, friends and I have been going for years and have never been disappointed. I’ve even had my mom’s 50^th and my baby shower there and people still talk about the food and service at both parties till this day. This is a family business, something you don’t see anymore and the owner and staff are very warm and accommodating. Amazing food and people. Clean and beautiful restaurant with a lovely view. Couldn’t ask for anything more.

Red meat was superb. Had the lamp lollipop as an app, and went for the 32oz porter for the main.
The seafood not so much. Scallops were going bad and the shrimp seemed like it was frozen.
Service was good considering they had a private party upstairs. A little slow, but I was in no rush to leave.

If I could give this 3 and a half stars that would be my rating. This was our first trip to Ruddy and Deans and I understand the place has been here for about 16 years. What got my attention was its rating in the S.I. Advance. I LOVE a great steak and have yet to find one on the Island (see my review for West Shore Inn).
When we first walked in I was a bit surprised by the décor. It’s not terrible, but I expected something a bit more updated. My bench seat in our booth was actually pretty well worn down to being ripped open. Time for a new bench maybe? Better yet, how about no bench seats and replace with a nice set of table and chairs. In any case, the place looks like it has not been updated since it opened.
The service was excellent. Friendly, helpful, and attentive. We passed on appetizers to save room for the star of the show — a 32 ounce dry aged porterhouse done just short of medium. We also ordered sauteed spinach and fries for our sides, and then an extra side of the lobster mac & cheese.
The steak was perfectly done and I loved that they carved it before bringing it to the table. We split that bad boy with my wife taking the filet side while I worked on the strip side. it was… very good. Not great. But better than any steak I’ve had on the Island that didn’t come off my own grill. It came out smoking hot, but the plates we were given we’re cold. So when we transferred that nice hot juicy steak to our plates, they cooled rather quickly. Same for the spinach. It would be so simple to bring warmed plates and I wish they would have.
As I said the steak was very good. But it would have benefited from some sort of hot steak juice/gravy/sauce…something. Maybe if we had ordered the mushroom and onion side it would have had the moisture and extra flavor I was looking for. Again, I’ll say, it was very good… it just didn’t knock my socks off.
What did knock them off was the lobster mac & cheese — best I’ve ever had with only one exception and that was a dish that added truffle oil to the combination. This side was outstanding and I highly recommend it.
We will go back. This was a positive dining experience. I was just hoping it would blow me away and it didn’t.

Superb steaks… excellent service. Reasonably priced, as steakhouses go. Questionable baked clams and a too sweet cheesecake which is why I only give the four stars, instead of five. But then again, who cares about clams and cheesecake at a steakhouse? Ordered half the menu — everything else was perfect. Fat, fresh calamari… luxurious lamb chops… decadent lobster Mac and cheese, and perfectly-​seasoned melt in your mouth steaks.
Definitely give it a go! We’ll be back!

Was not impressed at all. It seem like no one was prepared for customers ?? I went based on word of mouth recommendations but I’ll never do that again ! Very dissatisfied

We went to Ruddy and Deans on a Monday night for my husbands birthday. We had such an incredible meal! We started off with the thick cut bacon over German potato salad and the best French onion soup! I love French onion soup and I have it almost everywhere I go so trust me it was the best. We also ordered lamb lollipops that were so delicious and juicy. For entrees my husband and I split a steak that was cooked exactly how we like it we ate it down to the bone. We also ordered lobster Mac and cheese it had the crisy breadcrumb top and more than enough lobster inside. We will definitely be going back soon !!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

Best steaks on the island. Love to smoke cigars on the roof in the summer.

Been here a bunch of times since my last review… it is very consistent. The steaks are SOO good… absolutely perfectly cooked every time. Most recently we had the house smoked bacon (a special) — delicious. The service, neighborhood-​ly awesome and friendly. I feel like in a way, this place is like the best kept secret of the north shore…

Was going to give 4, but giving 5 stars because it’s by far the best place in the area. In what is a very average to below average area of food, this place is insanely good. Yeah, little pricey, but what do you expect near Manhattan? Plus, quality food. I mean fresh salads, and great steaks and fish. Burgers good too. Can’t go wrong here.

I don’t know the neighborhood well, so I can’t compare this restaurant to the other options in the area. It’s at the bed of the Staten Island ferry, let’s start there. Being a New Yorker, and originally from the north shore of Long Island, for a steak house the ambiance and clientele wasn’t too classy.
THE FOOD:
The ceased salad to start was cheesey and delicious. It was well dressed, definitely not for someone on a diet. I had the sirloin for my main course. I think they put too many fries on my plate, but other than that, order it medium rare and you’re set! I would say the entire experience is very average.

Dinner last Saturday with my sister. Not sure what the hell happened but food was completey off. Asked hostess if their was someone different in the kitchen — she said no.
I liked Ruddy and Dean’s because their food was consistently excellent — very Manhattan-​esque and thankfully very un-​Staten Island.
But when I ate there Saturday it was as if I was in an completely different restaurant. Prices were the same but food was substandard.
Sister’s meal: Clam chowder was thin and
ordinary Normally it is a thicker consistensy with corn in it. Surf and turf both tasted old.
My meal: Special mesculin salad with gouda — lettuce was washed but not dried so I had a wet soggy salad. Mussels were good — it’s almost impossible to screw up mussels. Wedge salad — normally an amazing wedge of iceberg, large and firm, instead was Pathmark quality soft lettuce. Gorgonzola dressing is always out of this world — it was chunks of cheese with cream.
I’m not sure if I will go back. It’s too expensive to take a chance.

One of those nights where we had a Steak craving we found Ruddy & Dean’s. I am very happy with the service & the food. The Lamb lollipop were amazing, soft & juicy. The steak I ordered was medium well but it was kinda well done. Not a big deal but very tasty. Dessert was AMAZING it is a must have. Overall I am very happy & will be visiting again without a doubt.
