It’s hard to find a good lunch spot in Ferguson, but I found a pretty good one. I was pleasantly surprised at the outcome of my decision to try the Thyme Table Café on a rainy weekday for lunch. I was definitely one of the youngest clients in the café, but that is really my style. I like things that most elders like: coffee, sandwiches, warm blankets… ok, so Thyme Table doesn’t have blankets — but it was a little chilly in there. The server could not have been nicer. She was so genuine in her excitement when we ordered the chocolate pie — she couldn’t have been nicer. Reminded me of the old times when I lived in Wisconsin and everyone had that northern accent from Fargo and was just as nice as can be. Anyways, onto the food. I had a bowl of chili and half a chicken salad sandwich. The chicken salad was pretty good — nice flavor and not too much mayo. The only downside was the bread could have been a little better. The chili was excellent! Very spicy and full of meat — just the way I like it. I think the specialty of the Thyme Table is dessert, because they had a lot of options. We went with the chocolate pie, and it was delicious. It was like a warm gooey brownie baked on a pie crust. If only I had ordered it a-la-mode — it would have been perfect. I’ll definitely be back to hang out with the Ferguson retirees and try some more fancy desserts.

I have an aunt who works at UMSL; we often will meet up for lunch when I’m in town. There aren’t a lot of options within an easy drive of campus, though, so finding something quick and quality that we’ve not already visited presents a challenge. Enter Thyme Table Café. I’d been passing through Ferguson a few days before, drove past this place and made a mental note to pay them a visit. It’s maybe a 7 minute drive from campus. The day we were in they were turning a steady business. Service was attentive, the sandwiches were tasty if not remarkable and the bill reasonable. The décor is simple but an improvement on the rather dull exterior; parking is easy. Call it a solid lunch option for mid-North County.

I work in North County, so when it comes to lunch, I usually just bring something from home; it’s good for my wallet(and my waistline!) and to be honest, Hazelwood just doesn’t offer much in the way of(non-chain) food. But when I read Jonathan’s review of Thyme Table Café and noted that he tried their pumpkin bread pudding, I KNEW I had to try this place. Umm… hello? Pumpkin AND bread pudding? Two of my favorite things! Anyway, I called Thyme table to see if they were offering pumpkin bread pudding. It IS fall, after all! Sadly, they weren’t, but they were still offering regular bread pudding. That was enough to get me out the door! Thyme Table is nestled in a cutesy part of Ferguson. Old Ferguson, if you will. There were lots of cute little hole-in-the-wall shops. It almost reminded me of Old Town St. Charles. Kind of. Anyway, I called in my order and was on my way. I arrived about 10 minutes later, and after a short 5 minute wait, my food was ready. I read a note on the menu that said something along the lines of «be patient because we cook everything to order!». I always see that as a good sign; I’m willing to wait a little longer for great food. I ordered the BLT on marble rye bread and bread pudding. The BLT was okay. Nothing special, really. The marble rye bread was an interesting touch, but other than that, it didn’t knock my socks off. The bread pudding? Well… it was a little cooler than room temperature. Like it had been refrigerated at one point, and was just coming to room temp. Now… I’ve had a lot of bread pudding in my day(a LOT!) and I’ve never had room temperature/cold bread pudding. I like it piping hot, or at least warm! Whoever put my order together was nice enough to put the caramel sauce and whipped cream in little to-go cups, which was nice. But the bread pudding was just mediocre to me. It was custard like, and the piece they gave me was HUGE, but it just wasn’t good enough to eat the whole thing. And when I don’t eat my entire serving of bread pudding, you know something’s up! :) The atmosphere was cute. It seemed to be pretty popular with locals; the place was about half full. I probably won’t be back. The food wasn’t BAD, but it wasn’t great either. Unless they bring back pumpkin bread pudding. Then I’ll be OBLIGATED to come back!

I work up north, and my co-workers and I look forward to free lunch periods when we can hop on over to Thyme Table for some tasty grub at a reasonable price. Thyme Table occupies a little building off of Florrisant that looks like it could have served as another little shop or bar some other period ages ago. Now, it serves as a quaint little restaurant serving typical luncheon fare and some great desserts. Upon entering, you are shuttled to a little table with little seats to look over their little menu. The food here is better than Bread Co. any day, and the wait staff is mostly friendly(sometimes curt when they are super busy). The café offers sandwiches, quiche(fabo), salads, burgers, etc. The food is good and covers a wide range to meet any appetite. That is all fine and dandy, but what about the freakin’ dessert? Um…spec-tac-u-lar. If you go just once, immediately order the Hot Fudge Pie. If you are diabetic, just figure that this could potentially be your last meal, but what a freakin’ meal it will be! This pie is outstanding as are any of their other desserts. My personal fave is the Pumpkin Bread Pudding around fall. So good it hurts. I mean, I could just skip the sandwich and hit up the dessert all day. So…that’s it. If you are up in north county for whatever reason, head on over to Thyme Table, stop in, and have a bit.(Side note: love that it is local owned and the desserts are from homemade recipies!)

This place is so much more than what it looks like from the outside and inside. The food is wonderful and it seems so much nicer than the décor. I highly highly highly recommend the Hot Fudge Pie. When I come into town I order the whole pie for take out. It is sooooo yummy!

The Thyme Table is a little local place that they built inside the shell of an old Hardee’s, and thank god they did! The food is EXCELLENT(best burger I’ve ever had), prices are reasonible, and the place as a whole is just nice to visit. Take caution, though: They’re only open for lunch. Bring your appetite! Their portions are HUGE!
