Would love an mango fruit ice cream here if I could on any summer day. I came in and they were very respectable and patient. Could be more informative. And would be awesome if they smiled more ! Especially the girls !

So my friend and I went back hoping the service was flakey because of Cinco De Mayo. NOPE. Great food, poor service.

They are out of CHIPS!!! How is that even possible? Then we left and they called the police… wow! They can’t afford chips because they have no customers! Everyone is across the street, eating GOODFOOD! The only reason they called the police, is because they were hungry for the only customers they had! They’ll do anything for a buck!!! This place is so wack, we’re never coming back!!! Wishing there was an option for negative stars!!! They would get –5 stars!!! Boo on them!

I made the mistake of coming here on Cinco De Mayo. My experience was less than steller. A guy greeted me at the door, he told me to sit wherever I wanted and he would follow with a menu. He did not ever give me a menu. I sat at the table for quite some time and was about to walk out and go somewhere else. A young lady that had come running in a few minutes before asked me if I had been helped. I said no and she asked me if I knew what I wanted to order. I told her i had never been there and was not even given a menu. She went and got a menu, and I told her I wanted to try the horchata. I settled on the chicken enchiladas and an order of rice. I did not know that the enchiladas would be so large. It seemed I had to wait quite awhile for the check. The food I had was good, but the service was poor on my visit. I have only been on Cherokee St a couple of times in my life. I don’t know that I would come back.

What the hell happened? This used to be the reason that you went to Cherokee Street. I took people from out of town here to show it off. They all loved it. The only thing worse than the food(dried out, fatty/gristly, just not good) was the service. We had to ask 3 or 4 times for water and the cheese dip for the chips — they finally came with dinner, when it was too late for the cheese dip(which was disgusting). They were out of the first margarita my wife asked for; she asked for another and they brought out the wrong type. The correct type wasn’t brought out until dinner either, and it wasn’t very good. My iced tea was left empty until we were ready for the check, which also took awhile to come. The icing on the cake was the insanely aggressive panhandler who asked everyone on the patio for money and started getting angry and yelling at one patron who didn’t give him any.

I wish Unilocal had a negative star rating because my experience there Saturday was absolutely unreal. Where do I begin? I’ll start with the fact that the group I was meeting had to seat themselves at trash filled table. When the chips and salsa were brought out the basket of chips was barely full and there was about a tablespoon of salsa in each container for our group of(starving) seven. We placed our drink and food orders(salsa was long gone) about 15 minutes pass and still no sign of water refills or the drinks we ordered. A different server came and took a couple more drink orders and we requested chips and salsa. The beers arrived right away but still no chips and salsa. Another 10 minutes pass and our food comes out(mostly wrong) THEN the drinks we ordered finally arrive with melted ice and all. The food was not bad but the rude server and the smelly homeless man that wondered on to the patio to ask us for money is enough to NEVER come back. Horrific. Ps– our server thought cilantro was parsley

Delicious! Food is seasoned to perfection and comes out nice and hot! Ice cream parlor adds a nice touch! Try one of their fresh fruit waters for an ice cold treat. This has to be one of St. Louis best Mexican restaurants. Only giving them 4⁄5 stars because the facilities could be nicer — they are by no means poor or uncomfy though!

The food was delicious. Our waiter was a little confused, maybe she was pretty new but she was nice, just forgot simple things like straws and gave us chips but forgot the salsa, then when I asked about different dishes, it was a delayed response. The margarita I ordered was strong! Which is a good thing the prices was very affordable and the portion size was good. They have a wide variety of ice cream it looked tasty but I passed on it this time. I will be visiting again so I will leave room to try the ice cream next time.

I cannot recall a Mexican Restaurant, North of San Antonio(lived there for 7 years) that I enjoyed dining as much as tonight. It just does not get any better than this, the service, the flavors, the portions and the price. The food was in a word wonderful. Incredibly authentic, they have Tex-Mex as well as traditional Mexican. My wife had a Lingua Torta(that is tongue for you Yankees) and it was tender and flavorful. My chicken was as well seasoned as any I have ever eaten. The chips and salsa were outrageously good. They have an old fashioned ice cream parlor, with home made ice cream. I was sorely disappointed that I did not have room to try it, looked wonderful Service was fast, the restaurant clean and the staff was very personable and friendly. Yes they have television, but it is tuned to Spanish language stations. So what? The only down side is the neighborhood. Cherokee from Jefferson on the East to Arsenal to the North and West is in a word tough. We did not venture off of Cherokee, and dined early(read it was light outside) for diner. I don’t know if I would have been as comfortable at night if I had to park off of Cherokee itself, and walk to the restaurant. Cherokee is so busy with people and traffic I see no problems, it is the side streets that are dicey. Will we go again? Yes! When? I don’t think they are open for breakfast tomorrow, but I can recommend La Vallesana without any qualms.

Steak tacos, pineapple margarita — just do it. In fact, you might want two orders of tacos. Great service, nice staff, totally underrated food. Some of the best best best on Cherokee.

Fresh, amazing steak burritos and chicken tacos. Couldn’t stop eating. Inhaled my food! Great patio area too! The homemade pistachio ice cream and fresh, crispy crunchy waffle cone was sooooo good. We will be back.

Torta Tuesday? All classic tortas for $ 5? Sign me up! I got a lengua torta and an order of chips and guac to go for a grand total of $ 7ish. The torta bread was nicely grilled up, and by the time I got home, all of the flavors of the contents had sort of melded into it. The lengua wasn’t anything special, but it was very good, and there was a lot of it. Overall, a very good torta. The guac really wasn’t more than mashed avocado, but I spruced it up when I got home, and it was nice not to be overcharged for it in any event. The chips, though, were AMAZING – thick, fresh, and perfectly salted. Extremely friendly service, too. I’ll be back soon enough for another torta, and maybe some ice cream this time!

My boyfriend and I are from Texas so we’re biased about Mexican food but this place was amazing! Service was quick and really friendly. We ordered half shrimp and chicken fajitas and tacos al pastor and carne asada, along with a margarita and guacamole. The salsa they gave us was good and the food came out hot and delicious! This place is probably my new favorite Mexican place in Saint Louis. I have no complaints about the quality of the food or service.

We came to St. Louis excited about the barbecue options, but we may have had our best meal at Neveria La Vallesana. Guys, you HAVE to get the horchata. This was, without a doubt, the best horchata I’ve maybe EVER had — creamy, sweet and definitely homemade. I’m used to that gritty texture most pre-mixed horchata has. I was also happy to discover that the salsas they bring to the table were quite a bit more interesting than most standard options; the creamy green salsa boasted a bit of heat, while the red salsa had a really good smoky, chipotle flavor. Any time lengua(tongue) tacos are available to me, it is inevitable that I will order them, so I didn’t really need to look over the menu. The boy ordered a burrito stuffed with carnitas. Both plates were amazing. I had noticed previously that the restaurant makes its own ice cream, so I was pretty sure I was going to have to get some. And what fun flavors they have! You can choose from a daily selection of flavors like rose petals, curdled milk, pine nut and prune. Unfortunately, most of the really intriguing flavors weren’t offered that day, but we settled on coconut and pine nut. I didn’t care much for the pine nut; it tasted to me exactly the way a wooden popsicle stick tastes. But the boy liked it, and I thought the coconut was delicious and creamy, so things worked out just fine. Service was excellent and our bill after three tacos, one burrito, one beer, one order of guacamole, one horchata, and two scoops of ice cream came in under $ 30 before tip. Definitely a great deal!

So Neveria La Vallesana has a lot of reviews and I’m not really sure what I can add except that my point of view may be slightly askew. I’m not looking for perfect Mexican food. I am looking for the perfect tamale. I may have had that at Neveria La Vallesana. They have a pork/beef tamale or a cheese tamale. They serve them steamed in the husk or fried without the husk. I ordered 1 fried pork/beef, 1 steamed pork/beef, and 1 steamed cheese. The fried pork one was different than anything I have ever had. The masa became crispy and heavy after being fried. It was very tasty and the pork was tender. The steamed cheese tamale was incredible. It was freshly steamed and not out of a warmer. It was spongy and there was a balance between the masa and the cheese combined with a few peppers and chunks of tomato. I can’t comment on the steamed pork tamale because I was so full I had to ask for a to go box. They give you a green and red salsa with the basket of chips and they are both SPICY but good. I couldn’t leave without 2 sabores de helado(like my 4 semesters of Spanish?). I had 1 scoop of coconut and 1 scoop of pistachio later in the day. It was as good as the ice cream you get while sitting under a palapa on the beach in Mexico.

***This review only pertains to horchata and popsicles I was skating in the area, and decided to stop in for something to drink to cool off. I love horchata, so I figured why not. I saw home made ice cream too, but decided to go with a popsicle since the horchata is *very rich*! If you are used to thin, watery horchata then be prepared to be blown away, this stuff is like a thin milkshake almost! It was great. I didn’t know fruit popsicles could be so awesome. I chose Guava, and it was seriously like eating a frozen blended guava. You can tell it’s the real deal and not some juice concentrate because it is full of those gritty little seeds in guavas(be careful chewing). They must keep the popsicles super cold because it didn’t drip on me the entire time. In all it was a great place to cool off.

Cherokee Street isn’t for everyone but for me I love sitting out on the patio demolishing a burrito and people watching. You really can’t go wrong with a burrito here. I’ve had chicken, chicken fajita, and al pastor and they just keep getting better and better. A word of warning that the al pastor can be a little cilantro heavy at times if you’re one of the people who can’t handle the taste. It wasn’t too much for me though with the nice pork seasoning and pineapple thrown in. The service here is often a little underwhelming but I get my food and drinks and walk away happy so no real complaints. I will say that the one thing I don’t get about Cherokee Street is the green salsa/guac/whatever they call it. It’s not something I find anywhere else but there but I chow it down anyway because I’m in love with nachos. Just a word of warning that both salsas are a little spicy if you have any people with sensitive stomachs/taste buds with you. The biggest problem I do have with this place is I get full on the nachos and burritos that I never can fit any dessert in my stomach and they look like they have quite the spread. Maybe next time!

I came here for the third time today and it was just as amazing as the two previous times. Neveria La Vallesana is an amazing Mexican place over on Cherokee street. They have tons of different options to choose from in terms of food. With that said, don’t bother thumbing through the whole menu. Flip right to the tortas and order one!!! What is a torta you ask? It is basically a Mexican sandwich. You can choose from a variety of meats to stuff your torta(e.g., chicken, pork, steak, etc.). The sandwich is also packed with lots of toppings(e.g., lettuce, pico de gallo, avocados, etc.). They are absolutely delicious and definitely something you should check out ASAP. I really like the torta with marinated pork and pineapple. Tortas(in general) are so great here that I never even question getting anything else on the menu. As typical with most Mexican restaurants, I was also able to get chips and salsa with my meal. Don’t get me wrong, the chips and salsa were good, but man that salsa was a little too spicy for my taste(but I tend not to like spicy food… so there you go). In addition to chips and great Mexican food(specifically the tortas), they also have homemade ice cream. The flavors appear to rotate. Today, I had the coffee ice cream and it was delicious. They also have several flavors with chile(e.g., pineapple chile, mango chile), which apparently is really popular in Mexico. I may be adventurous later and try this, but today I couldn’t pass up the coffee. Finally, in addition to ice cream, they also have alcoholic drinks, such as flavored margaritas. In terms of service, this place is amazing. We were well attended to. So well attended to that in addition to our waitress, we had 2 other individuals come over during our stay to make sure we were taken care of. Also, our food came out wicked fast(within 10 – 15 minutes). The final note is this place is SUCH a deal! Each torta was only $ 6.50. The ice cream(which was in the small to medium size) was only $ 2.25. Such a cheap night!!! In sum, amazing sandwiches with great service and low prices. Definitely a place you should check out soon.

I am a complete sucker for an authentic torta. Tell me a place has tortas and I will book mark it right away and get there as soon as the opportunity presents itself. These guys have a boatload of reviews and I hate doing the«me too» write ups so here are some bullet points instead: + green & red salsa: both flavorful and the green one was unique + spicy shrimp torta: really good, loved the flavor of the shrimp and the spice level — No fountain soda, only cans +/-frozen offerings looked good but I was not offered anything(yes, I could have asked if I was really interested) Very friendly service + good food = I’ll be back!
