Several of my friends and I were Thursday night regulars here before the remodel. Last night was our first time back and it went poorly. They were busy, so I cleared dirty glasses from the table we wanted(which was on the patio, so it was out of view and could understandably be missed by such a new staff). The prices were ridiculous; one of my friends had a $ 9 hotdog that looked like an Oscar Meyer and another had an $ 8 beer(these are US dollars and we were not at a Cardinal’s game). Several people ordered food that came with cold fries(although they were seasoned nicely) and the bar staff were slow and somewhat abrasive. By the end of the evening we decided that we were glad to have checked out the changes they made, but we unanimously decided that we need not return again. I was not surprised that I overheard at least one person complain about the prices on different three trips to the bar area(different people complaining each time).

Came here for the first time last night — neat-o! Step into the Cheshire Inn and all of your St. Louis troubles will begin to melt — that confusing I-40/Skinker intersection someone cut you off in front of, the city earnings tax, and what that big Amoco sign is doing there, anyway. Make a few turns and you’re in the Fox and Hounds tavern, a dimly-lit, cozy pub. The other reviewers do a great job of describing the atmosphere here; it is, to be certain, unique. There’s a nice big drink menu here. The house specialties seem to be the cold and hot drinks and the martinis, but there’s also an extensive wine and beer list, too, for those interested in something a little simpler. I didn’t order anything myself, but took a good while looking over the menu. It’s certainly not cheap, but not ridiculous, either, that’s for sure. A fellow was at an upright piano playing tunes all evening long. Over the course of about an hour and a half, we heard him shift from holiday melodies, to film scores, to other popular hits; «Linus and Lucy» and other Vince Guaraldi tunes really set a cozy mood. Quirky! I need a few more visits before this place can really sink in. It was reasonably crowded when we arrived at maybe 9:30 on a Friday night, and there was certainly a snowed-in appeal to the whole visit. I liked it a lot.

Great english tavern! Very small, but in a good way. Tons of tables, couches, & chairs crammed in next to a huge cozy fireplace. Very dark with lots of woodwork & great english tavern décor. The waitress was very friendly & helpfull for us out-of-towners. It was great sitting on an old couch next to the fire with a Newcastle… or two.

Fox and Hound Tavern is a pretty cool place. In the midst of the city of St. Louis here you have a place that seems as though it would be more comfortable in the mountain over looking a ski slope or some mirror like glacier fed lake. But here it is, here in St. Louis and a good thing too. Inside this quaint little bar is like sitting in the lounge of some old mountain cabin. The large stone fireplace and large couches and chairs surround it, giving you enough room to sit and talk with friends while sipping on your nice tasty beverage. The nice thing about this place is that every time that I have been here it has never been over crowded. It really would not take much for this place to crowd over because it is rather small. That is a nice thing though. Here you enjoy the quiet atmosphere while you enjoy the company of the people you are with without having to shout at one another.

Ok, I’ll be the first to admit that the décor of the Fox & Hound is straight out of a cozy little British pub, but the prices are ridiculous and the service even worse. Evidently, the night I went, the bartender had thrown out his back and the people behind the bar had absolutely no clue what they were doing. Case in point, they couldn’t even figure out how to open the cash register. It took twenty minutes to order a Guinness and a Kahlua with cream. I could have gone to a bar across town, ordered drinks, and returned in the time it took them to serve me. The Guinness set me back $ 7.50. Either the stand-in bartenders had no clue what the«normal» prices actually were or the Fox and Hound is a complete rip-off. Considering I actually pointed to the location of the Guinness tap because the aforementioned«stand-ins» apparently couldn’t see it, it was probably the former, but that’s still no excuse. Yeah, the atmosphere was cool, but not worth the poor service and the ridiculous prices.

HOLYCRAP! This place is absolutely perfect, in its own way. I went on Saturday night, and was so happy to find this place. First– the live entertainment was fabulous– the old timer they had singing and playing his Casio keyboard was phenomenal. From ‘Moon River’ through ‘Lean on Me’ he had me hanging on his every note, in a David Lynch movie kind of way! The décor of this place is a super cozy, worn out British pub dripping with dead/stuffed animals and paintings of hunting dogs. Somehow to me that’s a good thing. Lots of really dark, heavy wood, dim lighting, a roaring fireplace and well worn seating make the intimate space a great spot for a night of social drinking. They had a nice selection of Scotch, plus good beer and the place was crowded with some pretty interesting characters too(which is saying a lot for SL). I couldn’t imagine enjoying myself more– if I had to live in St. Louis, I’d drink here all the time!
