Osterman Propane

BEWARE!!! I am writing this on behalf of my elderly mother who lives in East Lyme, CT. THIS COMPANY IS A RIP OFF. I agree with the reviewer below — EXTORTION comes to mind. My mom has an 18 inch gas log fireplace that needed a new remote. They charged her $ 175 for a remote (can be purchased elsewhere for much less — Peterson Gas Logs Basic On/​Off Remote Receiver/​Transmitter Set $ 73.95 on Amazon). She set up an appointment to have the fireplace serviced/​cleaned and to bring her a new remote. For this service, which is a trivial job that takes about 30 minutes, they charged her $ 129 for labor. Lighting the pilot was part of the charge!!! The worst and most audacious part is that they charged her a $ 60 trip charge!!! This was for a trip that was 12 miles away from Salem CT. In a day age when gasoline prices are at an 40 year low. Driving to customer appointments is part of doing business. Can you imagine if every business charged customers for their appointments!!! She refused to pay the $ 60 and was granted a credit when she complained IN PERSON. This was after writing a letter which they ignored. After removing the charge from her bill they told her they would no longer service her!!! (PS – they also charge $ 5.99 for natural gas which is also at a 40 year low and trades at a spot price of 40 cents– Mont Belvieu Propane Spot Price:0.398 USD/​gal for Jan 04 2016). Good thing there is another reputable gas company in her area.

What ever you do, DO NOT USE OSTERMAN, they charge a $ 60.00 fee annually if you do not refill the entire amount of propane with in the year. I only use propane for cooking, so when I purchased the house I was the usage was. I came home yesterday to find a tag on my door, they unplugged my propane tank that I fully paid in cash for. All because I did not pay the $ 60.00 fee this year, they never called to tell me they were diconnecting my gas either, I was furious, then I call them to get it put back on, mind you I own the gas in the tank that I paid for $ 400.00 in cash. and they are charging me a reconnect fee of $ 99.00 plus the $ 63.00 annually for having their tank on my property. Unreal as I purchased the gas from them. EXTORTIONIST. SO BE WARE. DO NOT USE THIS COMPANY.

I recently moved to Brookfield and needed to have some work done to get our gas fireplace cleaned and working.
The lady I spoke to on the phone was really nice, and welcomed me to the neighborhood like an old friend. She sent a technician over within 3 days and explained their schedule to me, so I knew the days they are typically in my town in the future. The work was done on time and the friendly technician walked us through our entire propane system to show us how it operated. It was great to have the safety brief, as we are not used to having gas as part of our heating needs.
As this was our first winter in the new house, we used propane faster then expected and Osterman quickly came to the house to refill us the day after we called them. They also suggested some ways we could save money and trips by installing a bigger tank, which we did. The installation team came over as scheduled, and replaced the tank to a 100 gallon tank. They took care of everything and didn’t charge us a dime. They even credited us for the few gallons we had in the old tank!
All in all, I cannot say how easy it is to have them as our propane company. I’ve called them at least 5 times in the past year and each experience was great!
I’m not sure who Michael S talked to, but their review sounds like they may work for the Propane Plus company the praise at the end of their post. I’ve had a completely different experience each time I have called them.
