Imagine if a theme park churro and vanilla custard had a baby. That, my friends, is what I found here — a beautiful vanilla custard filled churro. For just $ 1 a piece, you too, can find this little slice of heaven. In all seriousness, I’ve been hunting down this particular churro for quite some time now. We kept getting Mexican food catered at work and they would always throw a box of these in with our large orders. I knew it wasn’t from the restaurant but I never found out where they were sourcing these bad boys from. Eventually someone at work let me in on the trade secret, which is why I found myself walking into this place at lunch on a workday. Lo and behold, the churros were sitting there in all their glory behind the little acrylic doors. Not quite sure when they make them each day, but if you’re lucky enough to get them fresh. well, let’s just say you’ve hit the jackpot. I didn’t get to explore any other part of the store or try any other pastries solely because I came here for one thing and one thing only(lol), but if I were basing it on that alone then this place gets the nod of approval from me. Only downside is that it does have a credit card minimum of $ 5 but who am I kidding? That just means you can get 5 churros for yourself and not feel bad about it hehe.

I parked in front of this market to order to go from Ben Tre. I saw the 3 for $ 1 mangos and thought that it was such a steal. When I got closer to pick some. 95% were about 2 weeks past ripe. They were wrinkled and bruised. I managed to pick 6 that looked good. It was only $ 2 so I was super excited to go home to eat them. I cut into one, and it was completely black inside. Threw it away. Grabbed the next one, black. ALLOFTHEMWEREBLACK!!! They looked ripe on the outside, so something had to have been done to them to then them all black inside. I thought it may just be the color, so I took a bite but it was extremely sour. They knew this and still sold them. Poor integrity. Only $ 2 but such a disappointment to know that they sell tampered fruit. They had to had done something really messed up to make them all turn black… seriously.

Good pastries but terrible service. The people who work here clearly don’t care about keeping customers.

Sad that they have a $ 5 credit card limit :( They have a lot to choose from so 4 stars! All the produce inside was fresh but I saw some plantains outside that were pretty black… So much pan dulceeeee I can’t even remember everything they had. :O

Since the new ownership I have noticed a few things: produce not as fresh, meat looks old and items are more expensive than other produce stores. I picked up one of the salsa’s located in the front and noticed it was expired for 3 weeks. This place can do a lot better.

This place has suuuuch a huge variety of pastries to choose from :) for CHEAP too! Definitely my go-to spot when I’m craving a Mexican treat. They also carry those rice pudding cups and so much more. Love!

Moldy produce, smells of garbage, and beautiful pastries. Signs are only in Spanish which is cool, and led me to believe that Mexicans like their produce moldy– hence the numerous good reviews. Or do the lack of produce pictures and numerous pictures of cookies tell a different story. Oh and that pesky minimum on credit card purchases needs to stop.

This is my second time here, I originally came for their sweet bread but this time I decided to check out the rest of their store. Wide variety of product and products catering to Mexican cuisine. Of course I love the bread, it’s worth the trip alone. Prices are very affordable. New favorite store.

I went here cause they sell churros, they were alright. Not very fresh, my parents loved it though. They also sell churros with vanilla filling. They do not have organic goods.

This is the popular place for Mexican pastries in the area. Nothing else is really popular especially the meats but people do buy the other things since they are in the store.

This review is for their pan y pan dulce alone: THISPANADERIAISONEOFTHEBEST I’VEBEENTO! The pan is dry at most of the ones I’ve been to, this place has the moistest, most sinfully delicious array of carbohydrates. And it’s always fresh. Too bad it’s so far away…

So sad :’(This was my favorite place to get breads and pastries AND churros but went here yesterday to find prices were up and quality severely down. The churros tasted like oil. Their version of Palmiers was tooth-cracking hard. And their pulvurone cookies tasted like baking soda. I had other pastries and they were dry, oily, and just so bad. I have them two stars for the super friendly staff. This used to be worth the drives around the block looking for parking… but now where do I go for good Mexican pastries and bread?

I’ve been a huge proponent of this market. Everything I love about a store can be found here. Clean as anyplace I’ve ever purchased groceries. Absolutely spotless and I love it! The butcher shop is very clean as well. No flies swarming around and you don’t smell the aroma of death and blood in the air. Bakery is on point. Fresh baked pastries or as Mexican’s call them«bread» can be found with a variety unlike anything you can imagine. We’ve enjoyed a 4 – 5 star experience every single time. That changed over the weekend. We wanted to make Chile Verde from scratch and decided to get all the goods at this place. We purchased a 5 lb. chunk of puerco aka pork and were in business. Came home, put it in the fridge and went about the remainder of our lovely Saturday afternoon. Fast forward to Sunday and prep time. I pulled the puerco from the fridge to get the chill off so I could get cutting and cooking. Opened up the bag and BAMMMMM! I was stunned with the smell! Death in the air. The meat had gone bad and we were(I was) heated! We improvised and hit up another market for the puerco and dinner turned out to be ab fab. On Monday I brought it back to get my refund and brotha at the counter, presumable Señor Hernandez himself was all butt hurt! He had the nerve to ask me: «Did you refrigerator it?» «Yes, of course.» «We received a shipment Friday, you purchased it Saturday, so I am not sure why this happened.» «It did! Can I get my money back? We had to buy puerco elsewhere b/c of the bag o death you gave us!» He handed over the cash, but an apology never left his lips. He was butt hurt at me, not at the situation. Once again, he must not have noticed the shiny, stunning red badge on my shirt that reads«Elite Unilocaler foo» b/c here I am, telling all y’all that buying meat here is not a good idea. I will say, maybe this is an isolated event. I will shop here again BUT it won’t be anytime soon. I can cop a resentment at a man for far less than dead meat and this resentment isn’t going away anytime soon.

I thought Mexican pastries are just cheap bread w/dose of sugar on it. I guess not. Mexican pastries is like Chinese bakeries. It is not a high class sweets like English tea time or French, Italian kind. Price of pastries at La Boulange is some where around 2 to 3 bucks. I was once macarons lover but i had to quit having them because … I had to stop, I was eating just too many of them. How about cannoli? 3 to 4 bucks on Columbus Street. I know that it isn’t same shit but I think it is. SSS, Same Sweet Shit. Sweet things will Kill You! It is almost like poison if you have every day. That includes about a … woman or man, The song is may be right, If you wanna be happy for the rest of your life Never make a sweet person your partner So for my personal point of view Get an ugly person to marry you So, I will get killed by it because I am a sweets lover, even though I am a jackass. So, is not nice to know that all jackass sweets lover will get killed for good. Don’t you have a jackass uncle or boss? Do they like sweets? OK, I have a good news for you. They will die soon. So, they won’t harass you anymore. Especially Mexican and Asian jackass sweet lovers are in trouble, in deep trouble because their sweets are less than a buck!!! And the size are large. Plus, they love soft-drinks! High blood pressure, over weight, heart attack, diabetic, cholesterol, stress, no exercise,… it is too easy to get those illness for Mexican and Asian because the great reasonable price.(well, I should say all Americans) That’s why it is hard to get those illness for Euros because the pricy sweets. but, I think all jackass uncles and bosses should go, no matter who. It’s king of shock to see all sweets are under a buck. It may not look sophisticate enough to Euros but, F’ them. It’s cheap, large and pretty good. The place has awesome sweets. Only thing we need is control your mind and stomach. … I can’t.

This is a great local market with lots of goods from Latin America. Their panaderia is literally a wall of baked goods that is all self-service. Also, from the looks of their meat selection they should also add«carniceria» to their name as they also have a large selection of refrigerated meats that will make any abuelita(that likes to cook) happy. The store is big, clean and well stocked. It’s located right on Grand street in South SF and there is plenty of parking on the adjacent public parking structure nearby. For my next Mexican fiesta party, I’m definitely dropping by this place to pick up my goods, piñata and all!

Nature vs. Nurture: Which plays more of a role in a person’s development? I’ve been wondering that a lot as I see traits in my son, one being a wicked sweet tooth that he gets from both Mom and Dad. Nature. We avoided giving him desserts the first couple years of his life: Nurture. Once he had his first bite of cake, Nature kicked in. He loves cake, cookies, and ice cream. While he’s extremely picky about most foods, he’s not so picky about desserts. We try to limit sugar intake, so yesterday when he asked for dessert after lunch(!), I suggested we’d be going out later. Maybe he should wait. 6-year-olds are not known for being masters of delayed gratification, especially in favor of the unknown. But boy was he glad he waited. We had dinner at nearby El Farolito and then I did a quick visual scan for ice cream or similar shops within walking distance. I saw«Panaderia» one or two doors away and thought it was worth a look. I hadn’t remembered Earl G’s and other friends’ reviews of it. Soon my son’s problem became which delectable looking cake or cookie he would choose. I was thrilled that the pastries were only 80 cents each. He eventually chose a monstrously large piece of yellow cake with a thin layer of white frosting and sprinkles. His cake was moist and really tasty. The size of the portion and the price were ridiculously generous. Mr. L selected something that looked like a thick slice of pound cake — another customer recommended it highly. It was also moist and something of a comfort dessert, simple and quite good. Oh yeah, and we bought a couple of grocery items, including a fresh pico de gallo. It’s not just sweets here. As we were leaving, my son said he wished we could go to this store every day. On a scale of 1 to 10, he rated his cake a million. Since Unilocal’s ratings won’t allow that many stars, 5 will have to do.

This is my go to Mexi-mart and favorite Panaderia in the Bay Area. Easy parking, spacious, organized, and always super clean. Their produce and meats are fresh if I wanted to throw a quick meal together. It’s right next door to El Farolito so I never do, but just sayin. My absolute favorites are their pan dulces or pastries.( ) I usually get a couple days worth of these cornmuffins( ), alfajores cookies( ), and my all time favorite these nino envuelto’s( ) all for under $ 5. The nino envuelto is a rolled cake that’s light, moist, dense, soft, and rolled with a thin layer of custard. Definitely one of my favorite desserts. After I eat one, I can speak Spanish. Between this market and Tapatia up the street, if none of these places have the Mexican food/ingredient you’re looking for, it honestly doesn’t exist.
