I’m sure you’ve heard the benefits of having a captive audience, especially when it comes to impulse purchases. I’m here to say that it’s true. I have two crudely photocopied soca records, each with a couple dozen thickly compressed party tunes from Caribbean. And it’s all because of location, location, location. Singh’s resembles a Burger King run by a franchisee who ignores all directives from the corporate office. The large, overlit signage and large identical tables remain, but there are placards in different fonts: «Maracas Style Bake & Shark, Fri & Sat & Sun» and colors all over the store. Merchandise is stacked up behind the counter and to the side, with canned goods and Caribbean medicine available for purchase with some curried goat. As you wait in line, there’s a DJ spinning records from a small booth. I’m not sure about any financial arrangement, but I left my half dozen or so friends in line while I surveyed the tunes on offer. It also helps that despite the high numbers of people working at Singh’s, the service is very slow and very confusing. Traffic is funneled to a center counter, and then people are rather haphazardly put in different directions. Eventually we actually try the food. It’s very nice, with pigeon peas mixed in the rice, hot pepper paste to dip in with the chicken and plenty of flaky roti skins wrapped around the meat. We split a few entrees, which can be difficult with this food. We make do. The high volume means this is a great place to try additional seafood dishes and sides that aren’t available elsewhere in Richmond Hill. A good place to come if you are making the pilgrimage out here and only want to eat at one South Caribbean joint.

I came here and had a delicious Doubles and Aloo Pie. It is self serve and super loud with Caribbean music blasting on the weekends with DJ and people getting crazy. But hey, what do you expect? It’s a Caribbean ting

Came here for the first time on New Years for dinner to take out with the Hubby. Was on my way to Sybil’s down the street but they were just closing around 8pm. Luckily, we stumbled upon this place! They had a nice variety of food. But what stood out were the great prices! The ladies at the counter were very nice and accommodating, helping to explain certain foods and items to us. We ordered curry goat with potato and roti(dhal puri) on the side; Chinese-style chicken stew with fried rice and a shredded vegetable mix that had sort of a pickled taste; two aloo pies with channa(one spicy) and one double with channa. The Chinese style chicken stew meal was good. The curry goat with potato seemed like it would have had great flavor if it wasn’t over diluted with water(major disappointment!!!). The dhal puri was awesome! The aloo pies and doubles were even more awesome! And for 1.25 each, triple awesome. We don’t live anywhere close by, but my husband said he would make a trip again just for the doubles and aloo pies! All in all, will definitely be back, but might be avoiding curries next time.

The doubles are delicious!!! However, I’m not a fan of the mixed vegetable in the macaroni pie; it’s weird. The jerk chicken is tasty and seasoned well also.

Decent food, but I love the doubles! Could get extremely loud on the weekends. Been going here for years and the food quality hasn’t changed. They’re still pretty good. I recommend giving them a try.

Curry chicken and curry shrimp. Not a fan of the pumpkin or the servers, but this place is definitely worth a try if your in the neighborhood. It gets really packed so beware of the line.

I think Singh’s deserves a solid 3 stars minus two stars for the inconsistency in the quality of their food. If you go on a weekday when they open or a little closer to noon, you can get some really good fresh out of the fryer edibles. If you go on Fridays, Saturdays or Sundays anytime around 5 on. You’re going to hit the long lines and the hoards of drunk gyrating men that dance to the music.

Object in Singh’s Food. As a staunch, ardent and loyal customer of Singh’s Roti Shop of over 17 years, I am terribly and deeply disappointed of their response to me regarding the following. Over the years I’ve been buying and promoting their shop to everyone I met and catered all my parties through them. IT’S OVER. Here’s why: On Sunday I stopped by and bought a lot of food including Buljol for breakfast. On my third bite, I bit on something that felt like coarse rock. Spat it out. It was about 11/4″ long by ¼″ diameter, grey in color. I called Singh’s and was told that the manager would call me back. In the meantime, I called the Public Health Dep’t — they advised that if I felt dizzy or nauseous to go the emergency room and to keep the food in the freezer for them to analyze. I called Singh’s again and the manager still could not come to the phone. Another server called me after I mentioned that I was heading to the hospital. I texted her pictures of what I bit on. She never called me back. I didn’t feel sick, so I headed back to Singh’s to talk to them about I found in the food. This is the shocking part. The owner came out and yelled and scolded me saying that Singh’s does not have a rat problem. He wouldn’t even give me a chance to say a word. I was in such a state of shock I believe I had my mouth wide opened forever. I just walked out. The owner knows me from all the years I’ve patronized his shop. I cannot believe that I have supported this establishment for so long and was treated like dirt. The owner didn’t want to even listen to me nor even cared. Here are pictures of what I bit on.

This place is a trip. Went there one night with a buddy who was familiar with it and the food. Hey, I’m all about trying some local grub! Part roti shop, part bar, part live music venue. A word of advice is to bring some good ear plugs because the band plays at a deafening level. Oh and they may just beat the drums for about 10 minutes if they feel like it. We ordered some late night«doubles» that my friend was craving and they were pretty damn good. If I wasn’t so full from an earlier meal, I would have sampled a few more items. While you are waiting for your order, have a drink at the Carribean bar across the street. Cheap booze, awesome reggae music on a weekend.

Lines were long and confusing. There’s no organization whatsoever. My doubles tasted good but the pholourie was sooo stale I couldn’t eat it, and that’s what I was looking forward to the most.

One of the all around best West Indian spots. Large menu with a variety of breakfast, lunch, and dinner options. Good prices and very tasty food. I’ve tried their doubles, roti, fried rice, lo mein, bake and saltfish, and many other items. All great and freshly made. Long lines(even at 9am!), but it moves fast. Feels like your in Trinidad or Guyana when you’re in this place.

I really dont get the hype for singhs, the veggie dishes are good but thats about it!!! The food isnt cooked for quality purposes, but more so for quantity since they accommodate for a much larger crowd. You are better off going to trini delite(down the block) for much better food!

Great roti shop. I’ve been coming here literally my entire life and singhs never fails! There are plenty of roti shops in the area but this is definitely my favorite. If you’re in the mood for really good, homemade West Indian food, this is the place to go. The food is great and always fresh. The only down side is that they’re not that efficient. There is almost always a long line. Everyone is always working with urgency but it can take a while to get to the counter. The set up is a little odd… there’s only about 3 – 4 feet of space to speak to whoever is behind the counter and it definitely gets hectic with everyone running around back there. I’ve waited 30+ minutes before. There’s also a full bar but I’ve never been there at night, nor do I recommend it. The décor is well suited and there’s a lot of West Indian decorations and things around the establishment — nothing fancy but exactly what you’d expect a roti shop to look like. And they usually have music playing and a cricket game on — people definitely like coming here. Prices are INCREDIBLY cheap but they’re also cash only!

There is one thing you need to order and just one — DOUBLES. They must sprinkle their filling with a little bit of crack because it will definitely have you craving more. Those doubles are just perfect. The chick peas, the perfectly prepared little buns that surround it and keep in all those yummy juices, the tamarind sauce, the smell, the taste, the texture is all so damn good. Go there, and even if you have never had West Indian food before and are skeptical of it, order their doubles with a little tamarind sauce and I promise you that you will not be disappointed.

By far the worst of all the Richmond Hill roti shops. This roti shop/bar is full of characters. I’ve seen numerous fights here, police and ambulances while passing through the area. The few times I’ve actually gone in there-I was harassed by old drunken men, waited on ridiculously long lines and asked out by the guy working the counter only to sit down and eat tasteless food. How can West Indian food even be tasteless? The ladies behind the counter were all nasty and their food reciprocated. On one occasion, everyone I dined with got sick after eating the greasy, oily food. Go elsewhere, there’s many more roti shops around that area.

The food here is pretty good. Their roti is very fresh and well seasoned. Their curry chicken could’ve been curried more(the chicken looked like it was fresh out the pot so it probably didn’t sit long enough) because the chicken was a little plain on the inside. I have had some good Guyanese curry chicken from a friend of mine who doesn’t live too far from this place. The Chinese style fried rice was pretty good with the curry chicken. Let me tell you the price is phenomenal for what you get. I got 2 meals out of a less than $ 10 dinner. A good one at that. The roti is much flakier and lighter than most other places. I really enjoyed this very much. If you are familiar of the area go for it. Sometimes the area can get pretty shady at night so unless you know liberty ave it might be a little sketchy. By all means though try it.

I waited to write this review until after I tried more places. That said, this is a great restaurant for a more Indian influenced take on Guyanese-Indian food — as opposed to Afro-Caribbean food. I had no problem finding a parking spot right out front. Singh’s is easy to find, there is a line at the restaurant and cars double parked. That’s a great sign for a food place. Inside, to the left there is a bar. It’s looked innocuous to me, but I went pretty early. There were families there, but that usually is not the best combination. That said, most folks are taking out. OK. If you plan to go, this is very important. HAVEYOURORDERREADY and be aggressive. There are going to be a lot of people in line. Like a lot. And many of them will be very knowledgeable about exactly what they want. They will follow the person taking their order and give explicit instructions about what they want. You may not be that person. If you are not, the person taking your order may pass you up. That almost happened to me when I ordered«Chicken Curry Roti.» Dumb thing to do, I now know, because all of the proteins are curried. So that’s unsaid. Second, more importantly, the Roti comes separately.(At many Afro-Caribbean places the question is is the Dhal Pouri wrapped or not wrapped and that roti can be called skins.) So my order made no sense. Fortunately, I was not to be deferred to the family of 4 behind me. I ordered the Chicken and asked for Dhal Pouri separately.(Dhal Pouri is just a think chick-pea filled bread, which is a must.) I follow the lady taking my order to the Curry and I noticed immediately that it was much more watery — for lack of a better word — than I expected. That meant that the Roti would not hold it to be wrapped. I also, on a whim, ordered a Double with Tamarind sauce. The Chicken was very good. Not as spicy or curried as I expected. It would probably go better over rice. The double was phenomenal. It was great. I probably should have put some pepper sauce on it as well. But they nailed that. So overall, I was very pleased. But it was very different than I expected. My recommendation is to order the food and some rice. The Dhal Pouri’s are excellent but different than you may expect. And the Doubles are a must. Next time, I’ll try the aloo pie and a double as well, but would recommend Singh’s as a great place to get Guyanese style Indian food.
