Wonderful artist, unfortunately deceased. I went to a showcase of his work back in December of last year,(2014). The family did a wonderful job, it was a beautiful show with many attending.

This is the studio of the recently deceased local Sierra Madre artist, Igor Dekansky. Russian by birth, and French raised, he moved from Europe to Sierra Madre to raise a family in the 1960s. He began as a sketch artist and painter of figures — then later explored painted works on wood, using gold leaf and high gloss enamels to create a sense of the Russian Icon in all things living. He was hired over the course of his career to paint enormous frescoes on the walls of some of LA’s most iconic buildings. And his studio was always in Sierra Madre — in this location — where all of his works began. Sierra Madre is well-known for it’s local art community, with such talents living here as Ed Harris(Actor), Howard Whalen(Sculptor), Howard Miller(TV Writer), Rolf Forsberg(Filmmaker), and Anais Nin(Writer). Sierra Madre is a small town in the foothills, north of Arcadia, which has been isolated from the main stream life of Los Angeles for nearly a hundred years. Before the construction of the 210 Feeway in the 1980s, Sierra Madre was a hidden gem that no one ever came to. Now, with the easy highway access, Sierra Madre is THE destination location in the San Gabriel Valley. It has a lovely town center filled with outdoor cafes and dog friendly walks. There are galleries, boutiques, home-grown food emporiums, and a liquor store that has sold lottery tickets worth many millions in local winnings(Happy’s Liquors — creating wealth for its patrons almost to the point where it seems unfair to the rest of Los Angeles). And Sierra Madre offers so much more — including a nearly crime-free environment, a town that a young person can easily get around in by merely walking, and a place with good schools, plenty of hikes, a wonderful park with a pool, an 80 year old Catholic Monastery offering retreats, and streets filled with kids who congregate in a healthy and independent way after school is out. It is no wonder that artists flocked here to practice their craft and raise their families. Igor Dekansky was just ONE of these local artists who sought this peaceful refuge — and his work can be seen by appointment only in his studio behind his home where is 86 year old French/American ballerina wife still lives, bounding up the two flights of steps like a 30 year old. Helga is her name, and she is as sweet as can be. Call or email before hand. She and her children are proud to show Igor’s work to the public. He was — and is — a great local California artist whose work should be remembered and promoted.
