Grumpy D’s is everything I want in a neighborhood coffee shop: 1. Good coffee 2. Super nice staff 3. Plenty of seating in a comfy atmosphere 4. Nice variety of pastries, gelato, and more substantial snacks 5. Open until 9pm 6. New local artist featured every ~month I love that Grumpy’s is my local joint. It has tons of charm and warmth. Is it the best cup of coffee and bite to eat that I’ve ever had? No. I wouldn’t drive across the city to check it out. But it is the perfect spot for locals to grab a great cup of coffee and hang out at.

This place is great! Good coffee, very friendly and attentive staff, and a cozy seating area. It would be 5 stars if not for the cheesy love ballads they had playing when I was there.

Finally! I have found my very own favorite neighborhood coffee shop! Grumpy Ds has everything I want in a coffee shop. 1) Allows dogs 2) Great coffee and snacks(sandwiches, burritos, pastries, gelato) 3) Enough room to work, read, or play small board games 4) Busy but comfortable 5) Everyone that works there is extremely friendly It’s a great place to bring a friend, your dog, or your kids. Come for coffee or come for a beer. Come for both!(I haven’t been for the live music yet but they have that, too)

I hadn’t been here since shortly after they first opened, but needed to do a bit of work so I lugged my laptop down here and checked it out. Here’s the play-by-play: –Walked up to the storefront, which still looks like it’s only halfway finished to me. Sign above the door says«Peace.» That made me happy. –entered and was greeted with a warm smile by the barista, though she had just taken a bite to eat so when I said«good morning» she could only reply«goomf mummumf.» Sorry about that. –settled in with a pot of peppermint tea, a blueberry muffin, and a comfy seat near a window. –Lots of people present and mostly focused on screens; good music in the background; the interior was bright and cozy, and I noticed another«Peace» sign. Both baristas were super nice and attentive to customers and store cleanliness. There’s not much grumpy about Grumpy D’s! –finished up and headed out. My clothes now smell like burnt coffee.

Unilocal tells me I’ve been here at least 10 times — I can’t believe I have yet to review this place! I started frequenting Grumpy D’s a couple of years ago because it’s dog friendly and it’s a good place to get work done. While it has it’s lively moments, it generally not as hectic as any coffee shop along Market Street. The sandwiches are just OK, but I still get one every time I’m there since I usually arrive hungry. Their pastries can be better, but I’m more of a savory breakfast kinda girl. Baristas are super friendly, the place is cozy and clean with a down to earth vibe. There’s plenty of seating, whether you want to work alone at the bar or sit down with a group of friends at one of the larger tables. WiFi is free and there are plenty of outlets to go around. I could hang out at Grumpy D’s all day getting work done or chat with friends. Love being a regular(–ish) here.

I visited grumpy just looking for a local coffee shop. The owner was really personable and friendly. I loved the environment, very chic and low key. They have live music going on every week I believe. I got the chair teas and it was fantastic! If I got back to Seattle I’m going back to grumpy’s!

I’ll update a poor review with a wtf review. An Americano here costs 2.65 for a small, then as sizes go up, 2.75, 3.80, and on up to 4.05 for a really large cup. All have four shots. That means the additional 1.50 for the largest size is for the hot water they add to dilute your coffee. Also, about an hour before closing, the staff begins to bleach the place clean. This is surely the single best way to ensure your business stands empty in that last hour. Perhaps the owner doesn’t know this is when they’re cleaning, but it fucking reeks. Strong bleach odor everywhere.

Absolutely love Dan and Marta! My FAVORITE drink is the Raspberry White Chocolate Mocha. Very nice staff, and love that they have outdoor tables to sit at when the weather permits, as well as FREEOFFSTREETPARKING! Kudos to Grumpy D’s! Have been back many times to purchase the Café D’Arte Coffee to bring home as well. They sell it in the bags and you can get whole bean, or they will grind it to your specifications!

Grumpy Ds is the quintessential coffee house. My nonfat vanilla latte was absolute perfection! If you’re ever in the Ballard/Crown Hill area and complete bored with the Starbucks on every corner, give it a shot. Good artwork, fabulous music and ambiance!

I work from home fairly often, so sometimes I(and my butt) need a change of scenery. I’ve passed Grumpy D’s several times without stopping, but I took it upon myself to hang out here recently to work. What a cute place! Employees are super friendly, and the people here seem to be regulars. Lots of tables and chairs, and there’s an area with comfy seating as well. I got a breve latte with a chocolate croissant(warmed up); that croissant made my day. So delicious; the chocolate was dripping out of it! People here clearly feel comfortable… some old lady kicked off her shoes and was airing her feet to the public. She was also drinking a beer and just appeared to be the type whose house appears on «Hoarders» with 1928928932892 dead cats inside. Hilarious. Wifi is free, lots of outlets, and the atmosphere is very cozy. I parked directly in the front! I only left when a band started playing(I had been there awhile anyway). I will definitely hit up Grumpy D’s again when I’m working from home.

This is my favorite coffee shop in Seattle and I’ve been to tons. Looks like a diner outside, with a plain parking lot, which is handy. Inside, it’s charming and has everything I love all in one place: not crowded, low key clientele, Ornette Coleman type jams playing in the background, San Pellegrino sodas, delicious coffee, chips, beer, pastries, leather sofas and armchairs, the New York Times and WSJ to read, sandwiches, wifi, ceiling fans and air conditioning. Death’s heads on the wall. One million times better than anywhere else I can recall nearby.

I HATE places that close before they’re supposed to close I get that yall need to get everything put away and wanna go home but isn’t that poor customer service to deny a customer 10 min before closing? My friend and I wanted to stop by and get a quick coffee because he had a long drive ahead of him and wanted decent coffee. I guess we’ll never find out if their coffee was decent because they turned us away. One thing we do know is that the place truly did make us grumpy.

Updated: I stopped in here again because I missed my bus and had a few minutes to kill. I was waiting in line to order coffee, and while there were five people in line, one of the two baristas decides to have a break and goes to sit down and drink some coffee. The other barista was both extremely slow and very unfriendly, and I decided that this coffee shop was not worth supporting, so I just walked out the door without ordering anything. Nice atmosphere, awful coffee I came in here and ordered myself a cappuccino. The baristas were friendly and the shop was nice, but wow, it’s been awhile since I’ve been that disappointed with a cup of coffee. Granted I am a bit of a coffee snob and have been going to some of Seattle’s better spots recently, so I was not expecting a lot, but this was still disappointing. The vibe in there was great, there was a guy quietly playing guitar, a table where a couple of people were playing chess, and more areas with seating and couches. Back to my cappuccino. Espresso itself was not very good, milk was a bit over-steamed, the barista spooned in a bunch of extra foam. At the end, about half the cup was foam with only a splash of burned milk and average quality espresso. I probably won’t be trying this place again.

I whole heartedly want to give this place 5 stars. It is cozy, has circulated art, plenty of seating, friendly baristas, and a comfortable environment. The only unfortunate part its the coffee is absolutely horrible. Café d’arte is, hands down, the worst roaster I have ever had the displeasure of tasting. I wouldn’t call myself a coffee snob by any means but I can tell the difference between a low and high quality roaster. I am someone who refuses to go to Starbucks unless I absolutely have to or if I am craving a frappacino(they are too good!). So when I say that I prefer Starbucks coffee over Café d’arte that is quite the insult. I still come to this place because it is the only coffee shop somewhat close to my place. If I had other options I would not hesitate to go somewhere else. Only due to the coffee quality. PLEASECHANGEYOURCOFFEEMR D!

I spend a decent amount of QT at The Pantry, so I’ve driven by this place quite a few times. Honestly, I usually go to Honore to get my latte fix, but one visit was enough for today so when I was stuck in the area for a few extra hours(thanks Bellevue Les Schwab… not!) the guy at Midas recommended this spot for me to hang out and wait for my car. I grabbed a copy of The Seattle Times and a vanilla latte, which was fine… not particularly great or memorable, but maybe I’m a little spoiled on that front. If I’m ever stuck in the area again I’d definitely come back, but I’ll be keeping Honore as my first choice for a latte around here.

As a Seattleite, we have almost as many coffee brands as coffee shops. But I don’t think I’ve seen a place that brews Café Darte in at least a decade. I stopped in for some espresso shots around 8pm, and there were quite a few customers there, just hanging out. I’ve driven past probably hundreds of times, often chuckling at the name but I already had«my» coffee place I go to every day(Equal Exchange Espresso at Ballard Market). I like supporting fair trade, but EEE closes at 5:00 weeknights. Grumpy D’s stays open til 9pm(!!) and I was pleasantly surprised. It’s comfortable(would be a great place to hang out, study, work, etc.) AND, most importantly, the coffee turned out GOOD — very smooth! Also, I met owners Marta and«Grumpy» Dan! There’s a really cool Space Needle sculpture(lit up blue & green!) complete with a 12th Man flag on top. There’s toys and books for the little ones, and they have food, other drinks, and even Fainting Goat Gelato! I’ll definitely be back. Price(at least on my doppio) was significantly better than the competition. I may even start coming here regularly, but for now, it’s definitely going to be my #1 choice when I need coffee past 5pm. I liked it better than Caffe Fiore, as well as my other after-hours option, Bauhaus on Market(though Bauhaus is open til 11pm). Basically, Grumpy D’s gave me reason to hope, and one more reason to not be a grump. But something tells me Grumpy D’s will be understanding of me if I ever come in while I’m having a bad day AND I look like it.

My husband and I were lamenting about finding«The Perfect Café» for us to work in for a few hours a couple times a week. Someplace where there is actually good coffee we can enjoy. Instead of choking horrible coffee down so we can use their space. One that doesn’t play obnoxious music. One that doesn’t play said music loudly. A place where there is a large selection of food so if we get hungry we aren’t stuck with day olds and egg sandwiches. This is our Goldilocks café, everything is just right. That said, even«Grumpy D» is a pleasure to chat with and makes a delicious cup of coffee. The other employees are friendly and engaged. Perfect.

I was walking through the neighborhood and came upon Grumpy D’s Coffee House because the other place I was intending to go was closed. As this was my first time in the space, I had no expectation one way or another for what to expect. I vaguely recalled that there was a coffee house here by another name. My Americano was solid, the service was fast and efficient with being just friendly enough but not particularly eager to please. Of course, I am not a regular. The bakery selection was adequate, though not abundant. The ceiling was leaking water and there was a pail on the window counter taking away some of the seating. I hope they get that fixed as water damage is a huge no-no for buildings. Other than the leak, the ambiance was okay. For me, they are missing about«this much» to qualify as a charming hole-in-the-wall but my impression is that they are still in start up mode. If ownership works at it, they are not far way from being 4 – 5 stars. An extra half-star for having Bobby Vinton playing on the sound system(unfortunately, NOT«Blue Velvet») to provide just the right amount of kitsch. I was a man on a mission so I wasn’t able to stick around, but I’d come back if I were in the neighborhood. 3.5STARS

I love this place! I can sit here for hours on a weekday afternoon and get some serious work done. The tables are stable(I can’t stand wobbly tables), and at just the right height for laptop work. it’s sunny, but the ample seating is arranged in such a way that it is always possible to avoid glare on my computer screen. The baristas are all quite nice, helpful, willing to please, and conversational. Oh – and the punch cards are the best deal in town! Buy SEVEN, get one free. Not TEN, or FIFTEEN like at some shops… SEVEN! Can’t beat that!
