This place is fantastic! Excellent coffee, really great breakfast plates — the huevos rancheros is amazing, complete with fresh cheese, little sausages, homemade tortillas, beans and sour cream. Plus the woman who works there is so friendly and helpful. There are not a lot of good options for coffee and breakfast in the excelsior, this place fills the void. Definitely go here!

Colorful little Guatemalan café new to the Excelsior. The staff here has been incredibly sweet and accommodating with my kids, which has earned my loyalty and appreciation. Tasty coffee, delicious snacks and typical plates, a wide variety of smoothies and blended coffee drinks, all surrounded by colorful paintings of Antigua and Lake Atitlan. Very enjoyable.

This place is delicious, and exactly what the neighborhood needed. I’ve gone about 5 times already and every time am blown away by how good the food is. Super cute place, really nice and friendly owners. I’ve loved every dish I’ve tried. Rancheros, pepian de res, and garrnachas stand out a cut above the rest of the neighborhood.

Time: 1:34pm/51°F cloudy Purpose: Cherylynn N recommend AJ’s to check out. Pull up and sign posted closed for holidays with no notice of opening date. Scan area and Yo Soy pops up within .04 mi. Since, I’m off till Tuesday why not? Ambiance: Place sits about thirty four total capacity. Wall and trimming are painted with traditional native vibrant colors. Pictures and décor directly imported from Guatemala. Place is more than spacious as it holds mini fridge, utensil station. Front counter area the standard business equipment along with acrylic pastry cases and cake pedestal. Overhead blackboard menu drawn and written in color pastel chalk marker. The color hue intensity make the place more comfortable and inviting. A little tint here and there has the place almost out of the kitschy loop. There’s no entertainment of anykind, but patrons seems not to mind. They’re are happily eating and chatting among themselves. That’s equivalent to the old saying, if the place is full of minorities, it must be good. Staff: Workers in their mid 30s extremely friendly and knowledgeable. Very busy like bees in/out of beehive(kitchen). Never cease to amaze me because of what they offer in there. I was the only one in there not latin, but that didn’t deter me from ordering. Guy with glasses(owner) forgot his name, but he answer questions with enthusiasm. Realizing how busy it was, I quickly place order and pay up. While waiting couple of chicas looking my way… sweating with anxiety. Oh boy! Oh boy! Cleanliness: Grade A, totally remodel every corner painted, not one area left unpainted. Table set up with place mat for easy lift and wipe cleaning method. Utensil area immaculate no drips from water dispenser seen. Well kept nearly organize. Eats/Drinks: Order of tacos dorados 3pcs/$ 4.95 comes with house dipping sauce. It was certainly tasty and made with love. These dorados are like taquitos for Mexican. Corn flour shell are fried then stuffed with chicken, potato, and veggies. I probably call it flautas as the size were a little bigger than taquitos. As with Guatamalan version its cabbage and cheese then sour cream and guacamole. Chicken meat were really tender and moist not hard and chewy. Corn flour shell very crispy and must be eaten with five minutes before going soggy. Potato seems like mashed had a good taste. Not sure if it was seasoned or not, but will eat it by itself. Veggies are mixed with potato so I can taste what veggies were use. Went ahead and douse sauce in. Few minutes later, I realized what I did. The shell soaked in liquid and went soggy on my second dorado. Still manage to eat it. At least I had one good crunchy one out of the three. Tacos dorados are highly recommended along with other dishes. Can’t go wrong here. Main Features: Carne adobada, pollo a la plancha, platanos fritos con frijol, caldo de res. Products/Services: Refer to blackboard menu pictures. No website or menu listed. Breakfast plates all day, pastries, bagels, soups, tamales, paches, chuchitos, pepian, enchiladas, garnachas, tacos dorados, torrejas, rellenitos, sandwiches, paninis, hamburgers. Punch Lines: Authentic, always buzzing, better than average, pleasing flavors, inexpensive, drool-worthy, special bargain, laid back, devotees, well-prepared, kitschy décor, light bites, lively atmosphere, best cheap eats around, casual and delicious, can’t go wrong, kept its standards, unpretentious, indulgent, crowd pleasing, is the place to be. Tradeoffs: No alcohol license, means no Guatamala beer like Moza, Brahva, Gallo to wash down these delicious food with. Not doubting them, but hopefully something can be work out. Final Thoughts: Gua-ta-ma-la heh? Here’s what I think. Although language and words are similar to Mexican. The cuisine are different. Guatemalan food is not as spicy as their Mexican counterpart. Their food is base mostly veggies, beans, corn, fruit. Garnishment is mostly topped with cheese and cabbage not sour cream and guacamole. Don’t eat much Guatamalan food mainly because some Mexican places pass it off as the real thing. That’s a major turn off for me. Also, its hard to find authentic Guatamalan places, but when you do, better mark it down. Will return to try caldo de res soon.

This café, newly opened, has excellent coffees, great Guatemalan food, burgers, bagels and breakfast. What more could anyone ask? Today I had a soy milk latte, a wonderful caldo de res, and a Guatemalan tomal, wrapped in banana leaves with pork. No, I didn’t finish everything but I couldn’t. The leftovers accompanied me home. Add to the good food(and free wifi) the excellent and friendly service, They have impossible hours(5:30AM– 8PM weekdays, to 1AM on the weekend), I suggest everyone try them. We need to keep them in the neighborhood.
