Xiao’s has sadly closed down and is now a Chinese Food joint. Too bad

I can’t relate to the other reviews because this place is absolutely THEBEST value for the money. Even though we no longer live in the City, we still make the drive about once a month just to eat here. There’s rarely more than one other table occupied when we come in, but the sushi is good and the price is right. And less face it, everything’s relative. For example, there are three sushi places near where we now live. All are much more expensive and none measures up in terms of quality. In fact, Xiao’s gyoza, hot tuna roll and rainbow roll are so much better, we don’t bother to order them in our local places.

When you make a choice to live in the outer suset you make a choice to not be within walking distance of many really good restaurants and bars. Xiao’s is one of the places that makes that choice a bit more palatable. This is probably a backhanded compliment but — i’d never go here if i didnt find myself within walking distance of the place. But having found myself within walking distance of it, im glad i stopped by.

I love this place!!! I seriously go here every month. The Rainbow row and 49er are my favorite. It is quite empty in there, so usually everybody always call for delivery. Their sushi are not expensive compared to other places I been, so I definitely recommend trying it out =D

My choice to try out this restaurant goes to say how effective those restaurant flyers that people rubberband to your door is because I would have never come here otherwise for multiple reasons. We called to order food on a whim of trying out a different restaurant. When we arrived 15 minutes later, not a living creature was in the dining room and our order was not yet ready. While I was waiting, I could hear the sound of a microwave in use. I tried to disbelieve the possibility of them microwaving my to go order, but I couldn’t help it! When we got home and opened our food, it looked discouraging. The California Rolls were scrawny, as followed the other rolls we ordered. The rice they used in the rolls was plain. My Chicken Teriyaki was sparse and the sauce was unappetizingly gooey! I could pick up the chicken and the sauce would follow from the bottom of the take out box until at least 4 inches in the air! *SHIVERS* I and my appetite completely could not get passed that. Our order came out to be cheaper than other Japanese restaurants, and you really get what you pay for. Plus, they run their business out of a Sunset house’s garage in a residential neighborhood. So I guess they are targeting people who are either too lazy to go just up the neighborhood where you can find Japanese food that is so much better, or they are serving people who lack the sense of taste and sight.

I order from Xiao’s once in a blue moon for only two reasons: they deliver and it’s dirt cheap. Anyway, I don’t want to go on and on with negativity, but I will be truthful. The fish and other meats they use are mediocre. Absolutely nothing special or good about them. Their chicken is kinda funky, their beef is okay. So far, I’ve tried their chicken udon, beef teriyaki, veggie/shrimp tempura and various specialty rolls. Save yourself some dissatisfaction and go with the rolls or tempura if you’re going to get anything at all. On a lighter note, they deliver late. So if you’re really in need of some sushi, and you’re tired/lazy/stressed out, order from Xiao’s. It’s not the best and certainly not the worst.

This place is a block from my house. and they still deliver to me! I know, I know. lazy lazy lazy. but eating their food in my home is more comfortable than eating there. Their restaurant is bare to say the least. and being the only people in the whole place is awkward. There seems to never be anyone dining in, so i’ve always ordered cooked sushi, i wouldn’t dare to order anything raw. though my friend did once and he said«know the smell you get down at the pier? imagine eating that» so cheap, cooked sushi delivered to your door? I’m ok with that

I’m not gonna lie to you and say, This is the Best Sushi in San Francisco By Golly! It’s Grandmother’s living room, all to yourself, with a sweet waitress, and a tab that won’t make you flinch. I love this place, and don’t mind if you leave me there to my vices – Tempura Prawns. It’s great to have a place like this to fall back on when your pockets are slim and you want to stay out of the lime light.

The name was the first warning – a Japanese restaurant with a Chinese name? But this *is* San Francisco and we’re a cosmopolitan city like that so I decided to give it a try. Don’t get anything raw. Nigiri, sashimi, it all tastes like the fish has been out for days. The cooked stuff isn’t too bad, but it isn’t great, either. It *is* incredibly cheap though. And fast – there’s never anyone in there… and it’s pretty obvious why. The people are very nice. I feel sorry for them.

Don’t eat here. The food here is disgusting. It’s not really japanese, nor is it chinese(owned by chinese people), nor is it really food. We went here because my friends live near it… and boy were we disappointed and pissed off. Sure they do delivery… but not sure it’s worth it. ICK. Don’t eat here!

They BRING sushi to your HOUSE! It’s not the world’s greatest sushi, but my kids like it and it’s fine for a weeknight when I just don’t feel like cooking. And the delivery man is super nice to the littles when they open the door. It’s fine. Did I mention that they bring the sushi TOYOURHOUSE?

It was good but not great. I would say that I’m in like with this place. It seemed good enough for a second date. The fish was good, the prices were cheap, the rice was a little off.

Four stars only because one time I called for delivery and it never came. Ever. Otherwise I ADORE this place. Delivery sushi for when I’m lazy, or a pleasant 5 minute walk to pick up from my humble abode.(They even delivered the beer for us too.) Everytime I get the shrimp tempura roll and spider roll. Heavenly after a long day at work when I really want to feast on expensive things but know I cannot afford to… I know«Xiao» is not Japanese… even my white self was able to figure that out. For some reason I’ve found that Chinese making Japanese food is more authentic tasting than Koreans making Japanese food. Feel free to challenge me on this generalization… it is not set in stone. Edamame and gyoza + a few good rolls + a large beer = gluttonous happiness I have eaten inside before… meh…I prefer my own home.

There’s a reason for the cheap prices. The food isn’t good! With the combo, you get 3 items, miso soup, salad, & rice for $ 8.99. What a steal! But it’s not worth it! Pay more to get better food! We got the food delivered & it came pretty fast so we were impressed. I got salmon teriyaki, 4 piece california roll, & chicken katsu. The teriyaki sauce had no flavor at all & was watered down. The rice on the california roll was all mushy on the outside. Usually I’m not that picky of an eater, but I didn’t even want to eat the other 3 pieces of the roll. The katsu was ok, but they seriously gave enough sauce to use for 2 pieces of katsu. Yes, this place is cheap, but it’s really not worth the money you pay. This was my first experience here & I’ve never been to the actual restaurant. I say pay a little more & go to a real Japanese restaurant.

Xiao’s sushi is very good. I’ve yet to eat in the place and experience the décor myself as I usually wind up ordering delivery. It’s not unusual for me to order three times a week from the place. Their Dragon Roll is very good and so is the unagi sushi. The delivery is incredibly fast and they’re very friendly on the phone. They memorized my address… which kinda scares me a little because it means I order from here a lot.

well, i come here enough that they know me, but that’s not the reason for their fast and friendly service. the food is good and the rolls are really cheap! get their veggie tempura roll, it’s the best i’ve ever had! i guess i’ll have to re-try the hamachi though, because it is my favorite but i wasn’t impressed with the freshness the first time i got it.

The first place I ate at after to moving to the outer regions of the sunset, and more to the point the only sushi place open seven days a week that doesn’t even bother with the pretense of lunch breaks. The first time I ate there was a Monday(which foodies will know is a bad day for sushi) and was impressed by how good the food actually was. Of course not every time has met that first one in terms of taste or freshness, but that can all be forgiven by taking just one look at the prices. I have literally filled up for less than ten dollars on several occasions. Among their best offerings: the Rock n’ Roll, the Golden Gate mega-maki, the Hamachi(never bad), and the Philadelphia roll(curiously absent from the menu, but nonetheless available and allthemore delicious). They are small and relatively light on the atmosphere(screens separate the bathroom nook from the register and the kitchen from the tables) but there’s non-stop tea available to customers that eat in. And the people there are friendly, which in this day of increasing distance and decreasing house leaving has got to count for something.

Affordable and fresh sushi in your grandma’s dinning room. Xiao’s is cheap. Xiao’s is tasty. Xiao’s has friendly service. Sadly, Xiao’s also has terrible taste in curtains. That’s OK, they deliver! I just wish they had a couple of more roll options.

4.5 stars really. Chefs Zhang and Xiao create sushi at rock-bottom prices. Try the Rainbow roll for $ 10. Free delivery to western SF. A good neighborhood spot.
