There’s something a mom and pop store that I love visiting. The owner of this place gives great service and value for the dollar. He’s very accommodating to any special requests that my young children may have. Love the burgers, the potstickers, the CA rolls and the strawberry/banana smoothie. I take my family there all the time!

Wasn’t expecting much from this unassuming, somewhat off the beaten path place sporting the name«Sugarcane SF… Tasty Delights!» But the gent behind the counter was very nice(whilst dealing with his son(grandson? nephew?) who was doing homework/playing video games), and served up my order in a timely manner. The Rock’n’Roll sushi roll was excellent and the beef udon pasta was delicious. Price was certainly reasonable for what I got. I went off to the Legion of Honor well-satisfied and with a smile on my face.

I can make the food here. The ice cream is also whatever. I don’t know if it’s because I’m not Vietnamese, but it did not fit my tastebuds and I left unsatisfied. The rest of my party also did not enjoy their dishes. It’s a random store that has its regular customers. I think locals would enjoy this place but I wouldn’t recommend it to those traveling.

Went today in the afternoon with my family of four. A couple in front of me was waiting for several minutes for the gentleman at the counter while he was immersed on a phone call, totally ignoring there were two parties waiting to order. The couple left annoyed. Dude was still on the phone. When he was done with his call I mentioned to him that the couple had been waiting for a while and that he should had noticed that. He responded«I was on the phone, if you can’t wait a minute you can go somewhere else». So I did just that. He lost 6 customers today and I hope he learns how to treat his customers with respect, after all, he’s running a business there. Added to the list of places I’d never go to or ever recommend. RUDE!

Stopped in after eating super spicy chinese to get ice cream. Now I only eat at three ice creams Mitchells(Nearly South City), Fentons(Oakland) and Munnerlys(Pine Grove). I was overjoyed to get Mitchells ice cream without driving all the way across town from the Presidio. Mexican Chocolate, Toasted Almond, Green Tea and Macapuno. Their menu also has Vietnamese food, sushi, soups and rice plates. Very cheap! Open 9:30 to 9:30 daily.

I visited this area and craved a Vietnamese sandwich and the name dragged me in. The man behind the counter was really friendly and made sure my order was right. The Banh Mi: really good, not too salty, generous with the fillings. The fancy pork sandwich came with a nice sauce and was absorbed in the bread well. The potstickers: ridiculously cheap, you get about six for $ 2.95. The sauce was just the right amount! I wild definitely come back again. This place has smoothies, snacks, soup, ice cream…

The owner Phil… straight homie. Love that guy, he greets you with a smile and his meals are worth while. Make sure you get to know him, he treats every customer like family. Chicken or Beef Rice bowl are my favs. But his signature chicken terryaki sandwich and sushi rolls are my go-tos.

Fast service, good Vietnamese sandwiches that are really affordable. I didn’t really like the Thai iced tea, it was a little too sweet and tasted powdery. However, I got a ham sandwich and my dad got chicken; we were both pleased. This is a good place to go to if you are not trying to spend a lot of money and want to get filled up. They also sell Mitchell’s ice cream here if you like that.

Was looking for some ice cream after lunch at Shanghai Dumpling King and Unilocal came to the rescue. We found Sugarcane SF a few blocks away and they have a good selection of Mitchell’s ice cream. I got the Grasshopper. Mint ice cream, chocolate chips, fudge, oreos. Yum.

The family who owns the business are nice people but, your better off at fast food restaurants. Food was cheap. We ordered the cheeseburger special and CA roll. All we can say is «we got what we paid for».

*CASHONLY* I get down with this place. 3 factors — close to my house, cheap as heck & vegetarian options! Ok So I’ve only tried their«banh mi» veggie sandwiches — the bbq«pork» & «chicken» but I am a fan! So the quality of course is not sublime but for ~$ 4OMG so worth it. I prefer the«chicken» better than the«pork» but for either the bread and the veggies always seem fresh & wonderful. Whenever I’m looking for a cheap, quick food fix, I just call ahead make an order and pick it up!

Just little nit picky issues i had(comments with photos) but you can’t beat the speed or the price. Great hot tea really warmed me up. Still wary to try the place after school lets out. Sunday was almost empty at 4:30pm. Feels like a kids hangout spot.

Nobody mentioned it lately so I’m telling you, you have got to drop in here and try the homemade potstickers. Best $ 3.25 in a long time for potstickers. Spicy, salty, pork and onion filled thin skinned potstickers. Sooooooo good! I will be back to this son-and-pop(idk where ma was) shop on geary! love it! Update: son n dad team strike again this time with the most amazing $ 3 strawberry smoothie!!! It was so sweet so fresh and so decadently creamy! I love sugarcane sf

Everything here is pretty cheap, especially the sushi. They’ve got a selection of hot entrees, sushi, sandwiches, and other snacks. They have an extensive menu of smoothies and other drinks. They serve Mitchell’s ice cream and has all the good flavors. They also sell them by the half gallon for about $ 10. They sell bowl ramen for 2 $. Vietnamese sandwiches are about $ 3.50, which is cheap, but not cheap for a Vietnamese sandwich. The interior bread from the sandwich rolls is not taken out so all the filling gets pushed out and leaving no room for them to settle in and it looks filled without being too filled. Our sandwiches had way too much mayo in it. It didn’t have enough pâté, cilantro, or pickled carrots. There was only regular carrot and no white carrot, so that was disappointing as well. The Vietnamese drip coffee was not completely pressed. It was not pressed in the dripper at all, so the grinds just dripped out with the coffee, making a grimey coffee. Good thing though, it was strong and were given a small pot of extra water. Best thing about this place is the nice man who works here. He’s incredibly friendly. This place seems to be real popular with the kids around here. Plus, this place is great because it’s right next to a 38 Geary bus stop so you can just hop on right after.

OMG this place is amazing! Thier food is soooooooooooooooooo good. I stopped in today for a coffee while waiting on the ever late 38 Geary. The man that greeted me was very friendly and I knew right off the bat that this place was so worth my $. I got my coffee and was out the door, I sucked it down in like 2min LOL. No joke. It was damn good! So just a bit ago I was like starving, and decided to order from there for pick up. I got the Viet-Chicken sandwich and I was not really a fan of teriyaki(which I told the guy, I think he is the owner) and he said he would make it special for me without any sauce or chicken which was cooked with teriyaki sauce. I also got the curry chicken(with veggies) and rice and ANOTHER coffee… lol This is honestly THEBEST Vietnamese sandwich I have had in over 6yrs! It was done perfect. The curry chicken is killer too! I am so happy I stopped in for coffee today, because I think I just found my next fav. spot in SF. I even called the guy and let him know I really enjoyed it and thanked him for making it special for me; he was pleased and that made me happy :0) Oh and they also have yummy treats(like Mochi) which I am sure I will have more of in the near future. Only downside= CASHONLY — But I would make a trip to the ATM just for Sugarcane!

I do believe Sugarcane SF is under new ownership since, when I walked by a few weeks ago, I saw them cleaning up the place a bit. The sign outside is different looking from before, and I noticed a «GRANDOPENING» sign hung up this weekend. I wondered if I was seeing things since I knew I had seen the place open for quite some time before. Well, my suspicions were confirmed when I went in today to investigate; the ownership must have changed from Vietnamese-Chinese to mainland Chinese since the menu items are now listed simply in English(no Vietnamese names anymore), and there are Chinese characters penned on the glass windows now. More or less, though, the menu items have stayed the same; there are fewer noodle and rice selections, and they now include homemade potstickers and sushi maki(pseudo sushi anyone?). They are highlighting the Banh Mi/Vietnamese sandwiches more with their red signs on the door/windows and moving the sandwiches to the top of their menu instead of on the back side(the previous one had the Banh Mi on the back of the menu). No more green tea slushies, but the fresh fruit smoothies have stayed thankfully. Prices have stayed the same as well, so the sandwiches still cost $ 3.25 and the smoothies $ 2.75. Add $ 0.50 for tapioca. Ice cream is still served as well, and they’re from Mitchell’s. There are some foods on display in front: spring rolls, some baos, tea eggs(in a red crockpot), some mochi cakes(more on this later), individually wrapped muffins, and plenty of instant noodles for sale. The place was blaring with a basketball game on the flatscreen, which I found a little distracting, but it seemed like business was slow today. It seems I only come to Sugarcane SF on foggy days. Today I only went for a small sweet stop: I ordered a passionfruit smoothie with tapioca and felt intrigued by the mochi cakes on display. They are three small pieces of egg-custard/mochi-like cakes for $ 2.00. Total for the order: $ 5.25. I watched the kind, middle-aged man make my smoothie and discovered the secret behind such a creamy smoothie: a scoop of ice cream! The passionfruit was smooth all right, a little icy probably due to the ice cream. The boba was hard to slurp up, and I wonder if the boba had been pre-frozen before or if they had become frozen from the ice/ice cream in the mixture. Still, I liked the smooth, fresh consistency of the drink itself. The mochi cakes, as mentioned before, were three small pieces of egg-custard/mochi-like cakes with some sugary powder on top. I think the reason why they called them«mochi» cakes was due to the chewy texture; however, the taste reminded me of egg custards. Maybe not worth $ 2.00, but it was a small enjoyable treat. What I really like about Sugarcane SF, regardless of ownership, is how they really don’t mind people hanging out for a little bit, reading, people-watching, etc. In fact, I’m sure they encourage the whole«chill out» atmosphere with their plentiful displays of convenience foods(listed above) and their relatively inexpensive entrees(the most«expensive» is $ 6.25). I believe they’re also advertising a huge sushi tray for $ 26.99, although I’m not sure if that’s just a grand opening special or not. I’m not sure of the Banh Mi quality or the quality of their other foods, but I sure do love that the new owners are still staying true to fresh fruit smoothies. So I stayed around at Sugarcane SF for a little bit to catch up on reading. I much prefer this atmosphere(despite the loud basketball game on TV) over a café; even though Sugarcane SF is located right on Geary &33rd, it’s kind of like a quiet haven away from the other aspects of the city. Hours are 9:30am-09:30pm daily now. Cash only.
