Dennis has moved into a new location, still in the Castro, but now at John Brody Salon, 2338 Market St, San Francisco. This is a fantastic place! Open venue, lots of room to work, great stylists, helpful staff, a wide range of products. Dennis chose his new colleagues very carefully, typical of everything he does. Dennis is a consummate craftsman. I am a techie, and I love hearing how he goes about his craft. He is also the best colorist I’ve seen if you want something that looks completely natural and undetectable(he has a way of erasing the gray/white and pulling out color so you really, really can’t tell). When you walk out of the salon, you have a great cut that will last for weeks and makes you look great.

The best in the Castro. Beeing seeing Dennis for nearly 15 years. Besides giving a smashing haircut, he makes one feel comfy and dispenses better advice than my psychiatrist.

I love this place because my hair stylist Ted Downer is the best. I’ve been coming here for years now, and have even taken my mother here to get her a(more modern than her usual) haircut. Ted is the best stylist that I have been to in San Francisco since I came here in 99′. The cuts are a little pricey at 40 $ but worth it.

Kinda biased for me to give the place five stars– I rent a chair out of this shop. Though I book a week to a couple months in advance and don’t have the availability for walk-in or same day clients– a couple of stylists here do. I’ve been doing hair since 91, and everyone else here has been doing it as long if not longer. You can go to anyone here and get an excellent haircut. So, you shouldn’t be deterred if you can’t get a haircut for right at the moment you walk in– because everyone is good, it’s unlikely this will happen, but some do have openings a few hours after. As with most salons in the Castro though, if you come in at six on a weekday or on a Saturday you’ll be less likely to be able to get a walk in appointment because these are the most popular times, and most hairstylists in the Castro are done by 7, so there would only be one appointment time after six available, and usually it’s not. So I strongly recommend you call ahead. Also, be aware that when you come in because everyone at this salon is an independent contractor, each stylist has different prices. The salon is clean, large, bright, has a lot of natural sunlight, and a great bird’s eye view of the Castro. I’ve been doing hair since 1991, and I can tell you the energy in the salon is the most positive, friendly and grounded energy you can get in a salon. No snotty attitude at all, and that’s something many clients comment on– that they like the energy of the salon.
