Sad to see this place go. I first came here with some friends when we were in the city for Fleet Week years ago. I would come back every time I came into the city. Was always treated well and always drank well. I suppose the hipsters will take it over with their pretentiousness and snobbery. So much for a working class Irish pub in a great neighborhood. Oh well there’s always the Northstar. Please don’t close, Northstar!

When I first moved to San Francisco over 5 years ago I was so happy to see an Irish pub down the block from my new residence. I went in to grab a beer and some food. When I sat down at the bar I noticed the entire bar was sticky or wet. I pointed it out to the barmaid. Her reaction was to throw me a dirty dish towel so that I could clean it up. I cleaned it despite the fact that no one paid me to do it. I have been back once in 5 years and witnessed surly service. This was never more than a tourist trap. I’ve been waiting over 5 years for this place to close and it finally has!

Ok, an update that I found on the web which anyone can find out. The owner filed chapter 11 and that means reorganization but I found out that it was converted to chapter 7 which is liquidation so my fav place is gone for good.

Time: 8:59pm/56°F mostly clear Purpose: Got invited by owner to come over for st. Paddys day not only this day I get invited but also the annual oyster and beer festival in fort mason in the past, they treat me right. Ambiance: Very authentic feel of Irish old country everywhere you walk each section has decos related back to Ireland. It’s deck out from wall to wall ceiling to floor just flooded with things of Ireland flags, harp, pipes, caps, Celtic pride, books, magazines, pictures. Seat at the made and you’ll make a friend real fast. Place made be noisy during the weekends most likely Friday and Saturday nights. I would be near the entrance this way sound will echo away quickly, can be a bit cold though, depending on weather situations. Staff: Lady around late 30’s blondish with an heavy Irish accent. Brought me a basket of their in house bread looks like a cross between rye/pumpernickel with three gold foil wrap butter. Very friendly checks up with me every 5 minutes or so. Fill water glass when down to about 25%. She said she knows the deal as owner told her about me, I’m good to go. Cleanliness: Clean from a customer point of respective. Eats/Drinks: Got the corned beef & cabbage $ 14,house slaw $ 4.25,smoked haddock chowder $ 6, 3 Guinness stouts $ 6ea. Corn beef was cook just perfect the fiber strands easily break apart with the fork. Season perfectly not over/under salted tasted. The rest of the dish consist of just simple veggies of potato, savoy cabbage, mash veggies. Slaw was brought over in a dessert size cup like a scoop of 4oz ice cream, said it was just made by the chef. Chowder was out of this world tasted very homemade with real bacon bits floating on top. Comes close to loaded potato soup only it’s more ump and love. As for washing it down the stouts if you know or drink it before I don’t need to explain the beer. Products: Breakfast, lunch, dinner, fish&chips, oysters, soups, apps, tacos, sandwiches, plate, salad, housemade crock pies, sides, Celtic hot dog, veggie burger, cheeseburger(O’reillys), rib eye steak, country fried chicken, pancake&waffles, omelets and scrambles, eggs benny, crab cakes, brunch sat/sun from 8am-2pm. Punch Lines: Authentic Irish eats, friendly staff, food made to order, feel of Ireland, lots of Irish related themes/articles, plenty of seatings, airy, sidewalk seating. Nearby cafes, banks, bakeries, funeral home, grocery stores, SFPD, garage, parks, churches, Chinatown, muni buses, Italian shops, boutique shops, pizza joints. Tradeoffs: Don’t have to go hit Geary blvd for your Irish eats, can have it in the heart of north beach/Chinatown/Russian hill area. Final Thoughs: The places itself from the outside is enough for one to be curious. Do not park on the streets on the weekends as your order may take longer, it’s busier. Instead park at a lot or garage this way you can take your time eating. I really enjoy the food here sometimes you just may need a change of the scenery and ethnic food. Sure there are other Irish places around but I just feel more homey here.

The hubby, another couple and I ended up here while waiting for our table at Capo’s. Since it was an unusually lovely evening, we sat outside. The server was pleasant, but SLOW. Really, really, SLOW. Surprisingly, the women’s bathroom wasn’t as gross as I had feared. Beer was fine, and the people that we shared a table with were friendly, and interesting to chat with. If someone else wanted to come here, I’d return, but on my own-probably not.

Not the best smelling bar — it’s your classic irish pub. Lot’s of room to sit, and usually a fun evening crowd. Not the busiest during the day but a fun local kinda of crowd.

We enjoy this great pub whenever we are going to Beach Blanket Babylon which is a couple doors down. This time I had the Steak and Mushroom Pie with the large salad. The steak and mushroom pie was great and the salad was very crisp and good. The chicken pot pie was also very good. I recommend this pub to all. The interior is warm and dark just like a pub should be and the food is great.

Went in a couple weeks ago and they still rock breakfast. And the bloodies. And I’d forgotten how cute and old skool pub looking the place was. Definitely a keeper!

Typical pub with good music and cool décor. Lots of interesting knick knacks to look at on the shelves. Music isn’t too loud, so you can still hang out with a group of people and hold a conversation. Good for all ages, from those in their 20s to those in the 60s. Pretty mixed crowd.

No frills Irish pub in North Beach. Went here after dinner at Stinking Rose for a few pints. They don’t have anything too fancy on tap, much to the dismay of my cousin’s father, who wanted Pliny the Elder but was looked at with much disdain when inquiring as to its whereabouts. Kind of a cool interior due to the various Irish playwrights(Oscar Wilde, etc) painted on the walls. Space-wise, there’s a lot of barrel tables you can use, just try to lean against the wall or be ready for a lot of right angle sitting.

Service is seriously hit-or-miss here. Luckily today, it was pretty empty for a Saturday afternoon because of the government shutdown(lack of tourists) and some pretty strong gusts of wind, so I got pretty decent service. Ordered a Smithwick’s and fish and chips. Beer is pretty decently priced here for a bar/pub in North Beach. The fish and chips though were quite good. The fries were pretty bland, but the fish was a local cod, and the batter made it taste like fish sticks, but not in the bad-schoolboy-type-of-fish-sticks. It was a really tasty cod battered well and fried lightly. Portions are good too for the price(4 pieces of cod).

Came here because of a fish and chips sign they had at the corner. Outside is hot with flies and pigeons so we sat inside. The inside had bench seats from a church and a bunch of wine barrels attempting to use as tables. So sitting down was a choice of uncomfortable to really uncomfortable. So we ordered the fish and chips and thought it was really going to be overcooked. It was not. The fish was actually cooked just right. Nice and crispy. This from a bar.

This has been the worst service I have ever had in my life. I usually never leave reviews, but I had to post on this because I am horrified at this establishment’s staff. Let me start off by saying that this place is adorable and has a lot of charm. But right away the service was not great. We couldn’t find anyone to seat us because the waitresses were at the bar… drinking. Which is cool, but at least help us out. Then the waitress took 3 years to bring us our drinks. My friend and were starving and we had plenty of time to make our meal choice. The food came out in a timely manner, and we began enjoying our meal. Halfway through the meal though, i noticed a big black fly in my fries. I was pretty grossed out… I told the waitress, she didnt apologize but instead ROLLEDHEREYESATME and took my plate away. Didnt bring me a new one… nothing. As if that wasnt bad enough, she charged me full price on the meal. I asked her WHYYYYY i was getting charged for a meal that I did not finish and had a fly in it to which her response was, «Are you serious? Its not that big of a deal» I asked to speak to the manager, but he/she was not there, so she RELUCTANTLY gave me a price cut, of $ 4 off. I refused that and asked for a free meal because I did not get to finish regardless. She said«Whatever. Take a fucking free meal then bitch» I was literally horrified. I did nothing wrong… At least if there is a mistake, own up to it. She did not receive a tip or anything and I am never going back there again. AVOIDTHISPLACEUNLESSYOUWANTFLIESINYOURFOOD!!!

We always stop here for a drink when we visit. We have yet to score a table outside which is where I really want to be. The staff is always good and attentive no matter how busy it is. This time we were there at an off time so it wasn’t that busy which was nice. I have yet to eat here which is a goal the next time we are out. The place is a darkly lit and the décor is total Irish pub-ish. Irish coffee is a must and their beer is great too. They let us get our daughter some hot chocolate from next door and bring it in –since they didn’t have any… and the day was heavenly. The end.

Very classic irish pub, with a nicely poured pint of Guiness. I was very impressed I could find such a place in SF considering the lack of good quality Irish pubs in the city(I am from Boston, so I have my bar set quite high). I will be back for sure. The bartender was very nice, friendly, and interesting as well. Strange mix of people, but probably just due to the number of tourists.

Note: This is a review of the bar only. I have no idea that they serve food too… This is yet another good place to grab beers and hang out with people, yet I like it more than some other places in Northbeach. Usually, I must get an Irish Car Bomb here, but other drinks are decent. I saw they have a coffee maker ready for Irish Coffees. How nice. =) Its a good place to grab a beer or something slow. What I don’t like about this place is sometimes it has a funny smell… like someone couldn’t make it to the bathrooms in time. o. O And with the dark lighting, I can’t tell if it was very recent. Eww.

it saddens me to say that i will never go back to this place. I came to this place because i bought a groupon and i took one of my best friends for lunch. I ordered a lamb burger, appetizer and my friend ordered stew… after we were done with the appetizer, the waitress told me they ran out of lamb! ?? really. 45 mins into the meal? so i ordered a regular burger… And then.(horror) the bread was covered in mold. YES… lots of it. check out the photos

I can’t deny the fun décor of Irish mementos and murals on the walls and some barrels used as dining tables. I’ve been here on two separate occasions, for lunch and dinner, let’s just say our lunch experience was better. The food is well prepared and they are not skimpy with the portions: the Irish stew is very hearty, corned beef and cabbage comes with 3 big, moist slices of meat and a mountain of mashed potatoes, their fish and chips is good and so is their calamari. However, skip the pear and spinach salad with gorgonzola, even though it’s a favorite combination of mine, I don’t like the overpowering spiciness from the red onions. Our server(for dinner) was«efficient» and would be there when we needed her. But we felt like she was in a hurry to close our tab, because every time we licked the last morsel off our plate, 2 seconds later, she would show up at our side and say: «are you finished with this?!» Geez lady. It must be the end of your shift because you were very eager to clean up our whole table. Also, the bar was out of a lot of beers(on a Saturday night?!) No more Harp, Beamish, Kilkenny … so our group was pretty much left with just Guiness. Well, not that it’s a bad thing! I’m not swearing off O’Reilly’s, but maybe next time, I’ll just sit at the bar if I want my fish and chips.
