Melissa K. and I stopped by Nick’s Corner Store for a little extra fuel on a night out in San Francisco. It was right outside The Saloon, and we wanted something else to drink while we waited around and figured out what to do next. The place was small and well stocked, a functional spot with plenty of booze and snacks and other basics. The cashier was a very nice Asian man who seemed like he was used to drunk people. We ended up getting some barbecue Corn Nuts and a cheap bottle of white wine in a brown paper bag. This was exactly what we needed. We spent the next half hour or so eating palmfuls of Corn Nuts and washing them down with swigs from this bottle. I doubt anyone’s checking out Unilocal to find liquor stores, but just in case, I’d recommend Nick’s for a quick stop shop in North Beach.

Well since Im writing random reviews for my stint in Nirth Beach… I love this place. I assume it is owned by the fabulous man who is the only person i have ever seen working there. Open till 2am on the corner of Grant and Columbus this tiny spot has smokes, liquor, toiletries, soda, and candy. You know. The basics. What i love about this place is the owner– or operator, whoever the counter man is. I’m rarely in SF these days. A few weeks a year. But he always remebers and asks for my dog– always looking to whatever bag carrying to see if she is riding shot gun as she does at least 75% of the time. That kind of personal attention earns 5 stars every time with me.

This tiny triangular place has lots of North Beach character, but more importantly the refined small selection of quality spirits that you may not always find at any small liquor store(such as Johny Walker Green, Fortaleza, etc). It is smaller than your average bedroom, flat-iron shaped, and very much San Francisco. Competitive pricing for a liquor store, but LOVE is always cheaper elsewhere…

With a name like Nick’s Liquors you can’t go wrong. It’s laid out like a pizza slice(you enter at the first bite) and stocks the usual corner store merchandise, but this is a personal pan piza and at ¼ the usual size you get ¼ the usual variety. «Haya birthday boy, wheres the ID, where’s the ID» the old man said. Curly, indeed, had been twenty-one for an hour and a half before deciding to celebrate here with a budweiser. Ah, glamor! You have to buy something if you’re going to Unilocal about it, so I gazed into the beverage cooler a good five minutes. Ah, success! Somewhere to the left of the Snapple and Vitamin Water, Parrot coconut juice in the steel can, yum. Every liquor store has at least one secret pleasure.
