LOSROSALESISNOLONGERHERE! INIT’S PLACEIS A NEWSALVADOREAN/MEXICAN PLACECALLED ‘NEWCENTRALCAFEESTRELLITASSNACKS’ and they don’t yet have a UnilocalPAGE! So here is my review for them till then! THISPLACEJUSTOPENEDINTHESPOTPREVIOUSLYOCCUPIEDBY Los Rosales Restaurant!!! They are serving Salvadorean and Mexican food and it is delicious! We were on our way to the German place up the street for dinner and the place was packed so we gave this quiet little place on the corner a try and we were the only dine in couple that evening at 630PM and that was a shock as the food was delicious, the service very friendly and welcoming. I had the cheese & chorizo pupusa and the spinach & cheese pupusa and they were delicious! The chips were good and the gravy was real good! We also had the platanoes plate and wowza wowza that was delicious! The sweet plantains were perfect and the beans and rice etc was super good with the added gravy and Tapatillo! My partner had the chicken burrito which was huge and delicious and I am going to have the leftover half for lunch today-YAY! Find this hidden Mexican /Salvadorean gem in The Mission before everyone else does! Salute!

Wow, what a shame. this place under the old owners was a hidden gem for those in the know and those who love authentic Mexican food. yes, dirty little hole in the wall but outstanding food. never got as popular as a few of the other places around which is why, i assume the old owners got out. closed down to remodel for a bit. opened up with cheap fold out tables and the saddest attempt at Birria i have ever tasted. stale store bought chips and tortillas replaced the thick home style that was here before. tisk tisk tisk. Service, well you don’t go to a place like this for service. it was not bad before but now it is just apathetic.

Simply, hands down, one of my favorite places in the city. There isn’t much to see out of the big windows overlooking the street but the great service and even better food makes up for that. I have to admit, over all of my visits, I’ve only had three dishes: pozole, a carnitas torta and chicken enchiladas en salsa verde. Mooooooan. I’m slightly embarrassed to say, although I’m not sure why, that I can go in on a Saturday AND a Sunday and order the pozole. I’m not a huge oregano fan so I ask them to go easy and I get a big bowl of savory soup filled with hominy and chunks of pork. Mooooooan. On the weekdays, when pozole isn’t available, I hit the chicken enchiladas. Yummy chunks of chicken, wrapped in a tortilla, smothered in cheese, sour cream and sour green tomatillo sauce. The carnitas torta is enough to feed two people or to save half for the next morning after a night of drinking. I’m hungry…

authentic Mexican food. now let me say this there is nothing wrong with not loving or liking traditional Mexican food but if you do this is the place don’t be afraid to try the Birria. this goat meat plate is off the hook. get it, con seca and ask for the broth on the side. just took my family there. 7 adults and two kids and we eats a lot. the bill was just over $ 100 with tip.

Los Rosales is a great place to get a traditional Mexican breakfast. They have gringo-friendly chilaquiles, as well as traditional weekend plates like menudo and goat stew. All kinds of huevos are on the menu, served up with chorizo, cactus, or a host of other delicious options. Of course, everything comes with piping hot tortillas, good coffee, and friendly service.

Good service, but the food was awful, make no mistake, this place is bad. Rice was hard, the meat taste like they picked up off the floor & the salsa was that faint smoked chili w/o ever really having flavor. Bummer Yo**

Miss and Mr. T ran away to Italy for a year, and while that was nothing to complain about, what the Miss pined and sighed for was Mexican food. (Yes, that means a year without cilantro. Get your head around that.) And not just«Mexican food», but what they lovingly serve at Los Rosales — fresh, hot hot hot tortillas, birria de chivo, pozole, steaming chicken soup, chips fried in lard, the right kind of salsa and sweet, sticky horchata. There is nowhere in Italy(trust us on this one) that has sweet lady servers who giggle when Mr T asks for«birria», a tv always set to the Tejano music channel, dusty plastic flowers on the table and a Virgin of Gaudaloupe waterfall. So we came home to San Francisco. And then went out for goat tacos.

I was craving Pozole and thanks to Unilocal,I went here last night. It was a hearty serving, though the red caldo was a little spicy for me. I sucked it up and ate it all, it definitely hit the spot! The agua de melon was good too, not too sweet. 2 Pozole 2 Aguas frescas tax + tip = $ 25

I’m so glad that the New Central is back as Rosales. Back in 2003 – 2005 I loved Central and went all the time(I work in the neighborhood). Unfortunately those owners lost the restaurant and I really couldn’t stand the change in ownership. Since it has become Rosales the quality and down-home authenticity is back and I haven’t been let down yet — except that they occasionally run out of homemade tortillas by the time I get there(late). Recommended: Albondigas, Chuletas con Chipotle, Filete de Pescado, Birria(both the regular soup or the dry seca), Chlaquilles, Fruity Frescas, and I’m a sucker for almost anything on the specials board! I usually don’t like costillas, but they had a special with costillas and zucchini(and friends) that was a little like a ratatouille plus short ribs and now I’m a convert — it was amazing(I wish I remembered what it was called).

This place is great! Food is very delicious. I recommend the burrito and/or torta for lunch. If you can get both! Prices are pretty good, in comparison to other places in the city. Service is very quick. Don’t expect to wait long, unless the place is obviously packed. And the owner is very nice!

This place is awesome, seriously the BEST mole in town. I’m so lucky that this place is right down the street from my house, because I go there at least once but usually more like three times a week. They are open early for yummy breakfast(especially the chilaquiles and huevos rancheros). I definitely recommend this casual corner. I am your friend, so I have to tell you that if you have never tried the chicken mole or the camarones al diablo at this particular establishment then you might want to reconsider your priorities. YUM!

Reasonably priced, no-frills Mexican with a great brunch menu and very friendly staff. For breakfast or dinner I’ve always been quite happy with my food choices here, whether it was a few fish tacos or a bowl of shrimp cocktail. Ever since Puerto Allegre jumped the shark, this has been my neighborhood go-to Mexican restaurant for East Coast visitors.

Stopped in tonight for a quick dinner… When the bf still lived in the neighborhood, we frequented this place alot… he loves the lengua they serve with the green sauce. i tried it and it was delish! I ordered the steak that came with rice, beans, salad, guacomole & tortillas… was pretty damn tasty! If you want some good, authentic mexican food, check it out… prices are pretty cheap too… don’t expect to be blown away by the décor!

Don’t be a gringo when you go there and order a burrito, because there’s more to «Mexican» food than bright orange shredded cheddar cheese, chicken fajitas, and burritos. Ask any Mexican. They have a very extensive menu with many Mexican specialties – soups in particular: Pozole, Menudo and Birria. It’s a sit-down establishment for the most part and most of the items you’ll order will come plated with a big heaping of Spanish rice and refried beans on the side. The food is good, and the aguas frescas(the Sandia, or watermelon, in particular), and the service are great.

When I first ventured in there about 2 years ago, the place was a dump. It was dirty, grimy, and it looked like it was falling apart. Fast forward to today, the place looks a lot better. I really dig the mural on the side of the restaurant. The place still needs work, but I guess you’re limited if you’re at the mercy of the slumlord who owns the building. As for the menu, the tacos, fajitas, soup, and menudo are great, though at $ 2.50 a taco, El Toyanese taco truck is a better deal down the street, then again, I prefer table service. The burritos and breakfast menu on the other hand aren’t great. The pancakes are thin, burnt, and tiny. The bacon is minuscule, almost the size of a piece of gum. The burritos… well… I’d rather go to Mi Tierra across the street. All in all, it’s not a bad place. But if you’re willing to walk a little further, Mi Tierra, Poncho Villa, and El Toro aren’t that far away.

With one of the bigger events of the summer in my beloved city occurring, I was called in to work for a few hours and help out the city in controlling the crowd from that event. Luckily the 16th St. area was a quiet and a normal Sunday. As a result, my co-worker and I were granted a lunch break at this busy cornered Mexican Restaurant. It’s not a taqueria. It’s a Mexican restaurant serving authentic dishes south of the Border prepared by the friendly family. Very nice and décor makes this restaurant like we’re vacationing down south or learning a thing or two about the Latino heritage. The restaurant serves breakfast all day. And for lunch, I had the Chilaquiles breakfast dish(#9). The $ 9.00 dish has bits of tortilla chips covered with Mexican Cheese, scrambled eggs, sour cream, and red or green sauce. My co-worker had the Pork-chop dish(#12), which contains two pork chops cooked their southern way covered with a red sauce. Both of our meals come with a scoop of Spanish rice, refried beans and a hefty basket of thick and crunchy tortilla chips. We each got a bottle of the popular Jarritos flavored drink to quench our thirsts. My dish tasted ok, despite the presentation looking a little sloppy. My rice was a little dried, and my side of refried beans was thin and soupy. The complimentary chips were thick and crunchy and dip well with my breakfast dish. I had a bite of my co-worker’s pork chop, when he went outside and talked on his cell-phone. The pork chop may looked dried and arid, but surprisingly very tasty. I should’ve got his dish instead. I paid the meal with a Mastercard. This restaurant maybe a favorite of CitySearch, but I might give this place another try in the future and eat something else.

Best Mexican Food in San Francisco. Here are my three reasons: 1. Menudo. Enrique, the owner, makes the best menudo I’ve ever had. The soup is so flavorful that it’s making my mouth water just thinking about it! I suggest getting it with hominy. They bring you their home made corn tortillas which are so soft, chewy and piping hot! You can watch them make them on the grill before they get to your table. 2. Soft tacos with carnitas. At $ 2.50 each you can’t go wrong. They are filled to the brim with succulent carnitas, corriandor, salsa, and cheese — all on a homemade corn tortilla 3. Quesadillas(super). We get them with shrimp and they are big prawns, just enough cheese, fresh guacamole(you can also see them make it) and sour cream Food aside, the staff are so nice, friendly and attentive. I never have a bad meal there. You won’t be dissapointed.

Cheap and dive-y, ‘natch, and the pozole is addictive — tons of hominy, and with sliced radishes, shredded lettuce and crispy tortillas on the side. The menu says it’s a special only on certain days, but they seem to have pozole everyday. And although it’s typically is made with pork(and at New Central/Rosales, there is an awful lot of it. .. and it’s not particularly pretty), they’ll make it with chicken instead upon request. Just writing about it now, I might have to have it for lunch today! p. s. The phone number on the Unilocal!listing isn’t good anymore — try 552.2326.

Pork fat = siesta time. Two«I’m hungrys» and you know your top priority is to feed your date. It was a HOT(75 degrees) fall day, and we had just walked by the double-wide bright red-white-and-green store front that screamed MEXICO, so we doubled back. The corner dining room was filled with customers, which was encouraging. There was an aguas frescas stand next to the front door, which was encouraging. There was an Aztec calendar high on the wall, which was … typical. Never mind the old restaurant name on the menu. The food turned out to be great! We went through two baskets of lard corn chips, and the salsa was genuinely hot. My date ordered lengua, which she called«light and fluffy,» and bottled water. I ordered a beef quesadilla, which must have been a foot across, and a Coke. This great lunch for two cost $ 19 + tip. The signs touted Michoacan-style food, and I thought it was a lot like Mexico City, only cleaner. Tonight I looked on a map and saw that it’s basically the same thing. See, travel does broaden the mind. Even if it’s travel to South Van Ness Avenue. Three hours later we passed out, for a nice six-hour nap. Must have been the lard in the chips.

I get a hankering for chilaquiles once in awhile and they sure do this dish justice! Yummy homeade tortillas add to the whole experience. I’ve been eating here for many years and get HUGE cravings to return. The last time I went to New Central Café(last month) it seemed to possibly be under new management because of some changes in the way the food was done and a whole different group of people in the kitchen than usual. This place is funky, but really good and cheap. Honestly, I should eat there more often(other than breakfast), but for some reason I keep forgetting.
