I should start a POOOOOOOF list. Where POOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOF refers to a puff of magic $moke where businesses bite the dust… and more often than not… Chine$e place$, that vani$h without a trace. Can’t really use the excuse that they’re remodeling now, can they? E & M star is another casualty. This bazzar vendor(situated right next to Golden Gate Bakery, but further in) that once stockpiled a bunch of low priced original Hong Kong movie import DVDs, eventually shifted gears and started selling similar product but made in China… at much cheaper prices. This was a year++ ago when I last saw them. Fairly recently(around the time of trying HK Claypot Restaurant and the BLAH-TAY Ten Ren Tea shoppe), I poked my head in here after witnessing the purchase of live chickens at Mings for DIY $laughter, and saw that the space formerly occupied by the cheap DVD vendor has changed into something that looked like a garage sale of unsaleable JUNK(interestingly enough, JUNK made in China, that I wouldn’t want in my trunk). Guess I have to pay a little more at the likes of Soyodo for my el cheapstadore imported Hong Kong movie need$.

E & M star is in a building next to golden gate bakery on grant ave. the inside of the building is subdivided into many subtenants. e & m sells mostly new vcd’s and dvd’s from asia very cheap. they occupy a stall on the left side. i rarely buy anything here but came here to browse. it’s really tedious to look for favs here. today, they were a madhouse. the miniaisles were crammed with people. the reason? vcd’s and some dvd’s were $ 2@/holiday sale or 6/$ 11. i was also carrying packages and didn’t want to lose any. chinese lessons(mandarin) how much is it? dou shou chin? one dollar yi kwei chin 25 cents liang mao wu 10 dollars xi-er kwei 100 dollars yi bai kwei movie dian yin

I used to hate coming here to buy movies but ever since my boyfriend started bringing me here, I started liking this place too. This place has a lot of movies. some newer, some older. Very cheap … compared to other places in Chinatown. Only complaint I have is that the movies aren’t really that organized so you’ll have to really dig and look for the movies you want.

This place is my top pick when getting the new HK VCDs. The lady that helps me is always very nice and always gives me some suggestions on whats really good or what really sucks. Shes funny to and always jokes around with me. Ive been coming to this place for a very very long time now. Yes there is a chinese guy that works in the VCD area too but hes not a very happy looking person. Never smiles or anything. total opposite of the lady. Now keep in mind though, you have to walk through the entrance and its pretty much smack dab in the middle of the entire place. Right when you walk down the middle your going to have to eaither take the left path or the right path. The left side has your vcds… those VCDs are older and they are not categorized as well as I would want them to be so it would be a bit difficult to find what you want. but they have pretty good deals if you buy a bunch. and most of the old VCDs are in the 3 – 4 dollar range. If you want the new ones, they have those on the counter. Those are of course a bit more ranging about 8 – 11 dollars depending on which movie and how good it is of course. If a movie is 8 dollars and its new. then you can kind of figure its not that great. Oh yeah try to pay in cash, using a credit card they will add tax. so it will cost more of course. But anyways though, Im usually here to pick up my dose VCDs. where else did I learn my broken ass cantonese? Oh you guys didnt know? Stephen Chow is my teacher~ kakaka
