Once again, Jet does it again. My hair is beautiful — pretty and totally unconventional. JEt is the go to for Asian hair. I brought in an image of what I wanted and Jet hit the nail and then some .
I like how Jet totally listens to what I want and don’t want to collaborate with me to meet a vision. By far the best hair stylist in this amazing city filled with talent. Love the skill and the style. My hair is art after I visit Jet!

It was okay. Just not 5 stars. I had to wait an hour while she finished the guy in front of me. Okay, maybe it was only 45 minutes. I had a 3:00 appt. I left 4+ hours later, and had to go back the next day for more toner. The cut and color were fine in the end, but 6 hours was way too long. And Jet is chatty, so, if you like to listen, then this may be the perfect place for you. I won’t go back, but, that’s just me.

Jet Black! What can i say, she is literally the best stylist I have ever had. She has taken the time to show me how to properly style my hair and for the first time I actually feel like I have some say in what my hair is doing. Not to mention she is an absolutely wonderful person. Thanks Jet!

I’d kind of given up on getting an interesting hair cut that I could actually keep up on my own. I have fine, curly hair and its easy to make it look like a three dollar wig. (Which is not what I am after.)
Part of Jet’s genius is that she «gets» what you are asking for and can turn it into a smashing hair cut. I don’t think anyone’s ever interpreted my desires so well. And when I’m in the mood for something different. I just put my head in her hands, and wind up looking like a billion bucks.
Its so damned fun, walking away from the salon, and knowing people are checking you out, because of what’s happening «Up There!»

Jet Black is amazing!

I’ve been a loyal devotee of Jet’s cult of hair for about three years, and followed her from Bella Union to Light Fantastic and now, finally, to her own creative space. *I will admit that I cheated on her a few times with various stylists on my side of the bay– and was always disappointed. I have never had a better cut than Jet’s.*
Yesterday I returned to her for a fix-​it cut– I’d had some really awful layers cut at a local (not cheap) salon. She transformed my hair without losing the length. Jet takes the time to listen and really understand exactly what you’re going for.
She’s a master with the razor, and her cuts grow out really beautifully too. This is a plus for me because I can’t always get trims as often as I should. I’m in an ultra low-​maintenance phase with my hair, and she never tries to give me a style that requires, well, a lot of styling! I have quite a bit of fine, boring hair that kind just hangs flat if left in it’s natural state. Jet always manages to give me shape, volume, movement, and a little of edge– no easy feat.
I would recommend Jet to just about anyone with hair on their head who wants to look fabulous.

I’ve been following Jet around SF for years. Now i live in LA, but make a point to fly up to SF just so Jet can do my hair. Seriously, she’s a hair genius! I’ve never even shown her a picture and she nails the look every time. She’s always ahead on the latest trends and is definitely the best person to rock your locks. Plus, she’s just really cool and fun to talk to! Viola, the Crime Lab Creative Director, is also great to be around and I love the private space at her new location. GO SEE JET! You’ll thank me later :)

Jet is a goddess and a hair savior.
One Star– My fiancé has challenging hair, and she nails it every time.
One Star– I have failed to bring in a picture or explain a concept that she misses.
One Star– Twice a year we bring in my teenage niece, exclaiming SOS, because the salons near her house in Texas destroy her hair and every time Jet makes it all better.
One Star– Jet is great company and so is her fabulous Creative Director Viola.
One Star– You will get an appointment, even in an emergency. You will look good.

Jet, and her salon Crime Lab, are absolutely fantastic. I have been in dire straights in terms of my hair for months. Every hair salon I’ve gone to try and find a new hair cutter has pissed me off in some way, and I was beginning to despair of ever finding someone whose scissors I wanted near my hair.
Crime Lab is located in a really interesting building. Although the address is listed on 18^th Street, the entrance is on Treat and you have to be buzzed in. The building, called Activespace, has a ton of small studio spaces for independent creative types. Pretty cool.
Jet’s salon, located in the back corner of the second floor, is decorated like a steampunk fantasy. The chair for hair washing is an old, Art Deco dentist chair. She has a taxidermy bird and lots of stainless steel. I suppose it looks like its namesake: a crime lab.
Jet herself is extremely personable. She also took time to carefully cut my hair, even though it is a simple short cut. Even though it wasn’t cheap at $ 85, she spent an hour and a half working diligently. Since Jet runs (and presumably) owns the studio entirely on her own, I also felt quite comfortable giving her my money.
I am so lucky to have found Jet. I won’t be going anywhere else now!

After moving to SF last year I bounced around a couple of stylists. All were okay but not great. Then little baby Jesus took pity on my plight and blessed me with a hair soul-​mate. Jet is a miracle worker. She listens to what I want and then gives me something way better than I had ever imagined AND since even my short cuts grow out beautifully I don’t have to come in all the time. I especially love being able to bring in pictures of old styles and leaving with a faithful but totally modern version. I’ve never trusted someone’s taste and skill so completely. She’s honest, straight forward, a master with that razor, a historical style scholar and a blast to chat with. Her new space in the Mission is unique and great too.

not only is it a great cut but she listened to what I wanted and made it happen! that is rare in my experience.

And when she split from the previous two places, I did.
Now she has a space of her own and it’s made of perfect.
My hair requires the straight edge and she keeps it short with skill.
But she’s also a magician for people with more important hair than mine. With a wry intellect and a diabolical sense of humor, it’s always more than just a cut. Whatever you need, Jet is the best stylist I’ve ever known.

My hair and I arrived blanketed with the stench of society’s evils, tormented by strong moral conflict, and suffocated with a sense of injustice. But Jet took my dark roots and brought them back to a happy and bright beginning, where the optimism of a lovely inspirational photograph became a reality. My case has been solved… for now.

I will not let anyone other than Jet Black touch my hair. So much so that I drive to San Francisco from Santa Cruz every six weeks for the cut/​color highlight. Here’s why:
*My hair is very straight and very boring. Every time I got it cut in the suburbs, I ended up with — surprise — a suburban mom haircut. Jet uses razor and scissors and magic to give my hair swing, drape and a more punk-​ish shape than I never expect but always love. (When I first came to her I begged her not to use the razor as it makes me look like a Wookie. Jet calmly explained that the previous attempts were unskilled, and went ahead. Brilliant.) The best part is that I can style it very conventionally for work or very unconventionally to go out — and not be 100% committed to either style.
*My hair is also very brown and very boring — and going dingy gray. Jet always gets the base color right, and when I highlight for the summer she strikes the right balance between subtlety and statement. I got more compliments on my hair this last go-​round than I have in my entire lifetime.
Jet’s place is just one chair in a little room with lots to read if you don’t feel like talking. She does a great job of making you feel comfortable and she’s a serious and experienced professional.

I have been going to Jet for all my hair needs for about 4 years now. I often go for a more edgy, fashion-​forward look — I’m always more than happy with Jet’s work. When I don’t know exactly what I want, Jet works with me to my extreme satisfaction. Every time. My last few cuts we have been experimenting with «hair tattoos» (lines shaved in various patterns — in my case on one side of the head) they get better every time!
Crime lab is a smaller space — comfortable and relaxed. With lots of interesting things around the room to muse over while doin your time in the chair. I recommend giving Crime Lab a try 100%.
