Been eating breakfast here during my visit to San Fran. They’re open early take credit card and the service is friendly. Good food too although a bit expensive but you pay a bit more for the friendliness if the staff.

Good portions, good prices. A little on the greasy side, but hey, what do you expect for a diner? Good omelets, super fast and attentive service, great prices.

Great homemade quality food with a smile! Visiting San Fran with hubbs and 3 teen boys. Ate at Chestnut diner 2 days in a row for breakfast — one son said best pancakes ever. Kids begged us to go back second day. The french toast is delicious — can taste egginess and appreciated the sprinkle if cinnamon with powdered sugar. Coffee nice and strong — both days we were given a to go cup. Hash browns crispy and homestyle potatoes had chopped scallions along with onions. Fresh eggs, toast and yummy bacon. Five of is ate so much food for $ 68. Plus the place is quintessential diner with swivel stools and booths along the wall. Worth it !

Whenever I find myself in the Marina, I always try to make time to stop in at the Chestnut Diner! It’s a casual and quaint neighborhood spot with great food, reasonable prices, and outstanding service. It’s a bit off the beaten track of fancier cafes further down into Cow Hollow, but their friendly service, comfy booths, and retro bar, are perfect to settle into any time during the week for a delicious breakfast or lunch. The«Chestnut Diner Special Omelette» with shrimp and crab is a favorite, and I always look forward to their French Toast and Egg Breakfasts. The lunch menu is also a winner, and any of the burgers with an ice-cold coke will treat you right. When family or friends come to visit SF and want to get an authentic diner experience, the Chestnut is my go-to and has yet to disappoint.

I’ve lived right around the corner from this place for over four years and hadn’t tried it. My boyfriend finally reminded me to go last weekend and we had a lovely little Saturday breakfast. The ambiance is a addicted fiber with booths and a long diner counter in the center. Pretty quaint — you can tell its been there awhile. The service was quick and courteous. The coffee was fine and the breakfast was good. My boyfriend got French toast with some add ons and I got a southwestern omelette. The price can’t be beat. I’ll definitely be back!

Super fast and friendly service. Reasonable prices and reasonable portions. I had the French toast(not soggy but not dry either– just right). My husband had the Frankie & Annette omelet. Again, just right — not too big, but big enough. We will definitely be back.

Solid diner food. The food is cheap and pretty darn good. I had two eggs over-easy with hash browns and sausage. I was pleasantly surprised by how good the hash browns were. Excellent customer service — the lady that served me went out of her way to make sure I had everything I needed, and she even gave me a final coffee refill in a to-go cup. The only small downside is that the interior was old and a bit worn down. But then again this is about what you can expect from a classic-themed diner. And of course all kitchenware were perfectly clean.

Crabby mood. Which called for the Chestnut Diner omelette with shrimp, crab meat and green onions. Mushrooms and cheese standard too. Wheat toast and roasted potatoes on the side. Impressive amount of seafood and flavor. Wish the charge for egg whites wasn’t $ 2.75 which brought the bill to $ 16 with tip. Too much for four stars. Lunch was also a strong three thanks to a fresh and tasty grilled chicken burger topped with green chilis. Appreciated the sub of more excellent roasted potatoes instead of fries. Another bit on the high side bill($ 12 with tip) holds back another star. Prices might have left my wallet crabby but the quality and friendly service still earn them a recommendation no matter what your mood.

I wanted to like this place because it is cute and near my house, but it wasn’t that great. Granted, I got take out, but I was unimpressed. They said 5 – 10 minutes on the phone when I ordered, and when I got there 15 minutes later I ended up having to wait. I ordered my eggs over easy, but when I broke the yolks, they were completely cooked and didn’t run at all. The hash browns were good.

How can you not love this place? Prices are low, served with a smile, food is great, no BS, total old school diner atmosphere.

It’s a small diner that serves up decent omelettes, hash brows, and such. The prices are reasonable. It’s a simple place, and early in the morning, simple is very good. I’d come back fro breakfast anytime.

When I went in, there was only one other table occupied and one young waitress, so I thought that at least service wouldn’t be a problem. Apparently, I was wrong. After taking my order, I only saw her again three times; once when she brought my food and coffee, again when I called her to remind her I wanted ketchup, and again when I had to flag her down to get my check. While handing me my check, she even had the nerve to ask me if I wanted some more coffee. All I could do is look at her! Even after handing me my check, she never came back. As it was, I felt bad about leaving her a 13% tip; that was way too much for the service I received! I ordered the house special omelette, with crab, shrimp and cheese. It was okay, although a bit bland. This, combined with the lousy service, ensured that I won’t be going back there.

Decent food… without the high price you pay at the tourist traps. This place isn’t the most appealing to look at… think old diner that needs a scrubbing. But it was clean enough… no wait and the food was decent.

I got exactly what I wanted. Omelette, sourdough toast, coffee, and best of all no pretentious judgmental people who’d happily pay twice the price to be seen somewhere trendy. This is the place for good diner food. And yes, the hash browns are in fact awesome.

Great place right across from the bus stop on Van Ness and Chestnut. Very convenient to stop in for some bacon and eggs Benedict. They also serve burgers, and I’ve on occasion stopped in for dinner after a long day here. Would recommend for consistent breakfast and burgers.

While on a two-week West Coast exploration trip recently, my family and I stopped here mainly because of Unilocal reviews and the proximity to our hotel. We found the prices reasonable and the food was great. Exactly what you would expect from a neighborhood diner. We had breakfast food including pancakes, and everything was good. The service is friendly but was somewhat forgetful(I think language plays a part in this too). After the food was dropped off, we didn’t see the order taker again, until it was time to pay the check.

Came in on Wednesday November 13th, 2013 around 9:30AM to a restaurant with 3 other patrons in it — and found a seat. I ordered the #15 —«The San Francisco’s Favorite» for $ 8.45 with Bay Shrimp, Green Onions, Sauteed Mushrooms, Garlic and Cheese along with Rye Bread Toast and Country Potatoes. After the item arrived — I noticed a slice of cheese similar to kraft at the bottom of the plate along with a small size of country potatoes. I found the entrée to be average — but not worth the price point. After finishing — I waited about 15 minutes for the check. Remember there were only about 3 other patrons in the place — as the waitress forgot one of the couples orders in front of me was to go as they sat in a booth and waited so she had to wrap it up. For the price point — I prefer New Village on Polk or Toast on Polk if your willing to spend an extra buck or so.

Great burgers! Fast Service, and super convenient! AMBIENCE: It has the ultimate neighborhood diner feel to it and I love the counters that go around the kitchen and staff. FOOD: Get the burger and the shakes. You will not be disappointed! Their burgers really hit the spot and the shakes just bring back old memories. SERVICE: Whether its to go, pick up or dine in, they work fast and make sure the the order is just as you want it. –Hungry Hungry Pongy
