This café is right next to the playground in the zoo, so it wins with convenience. This is normally my first stop when I go to the zoo. A coffee in preparation for chasing a toddler around the whole day. Most of the time the coffee comes out so hot you won’t be game enough to drink it until you get to the Australian animals section, take a sip and instinctively yell«Struth Ruth! This coffee is still too bloody hot!». Once it cools(normally around the polar bears) it is okay, it isn’t good coffee but it is better than no coffee. I haven’t tried any of the food, only seen it being handed out to other people. It looks like what you expect, not the best but probably edible?

The best thing about the re-opened Playfield Café is that the viscous zoo sea gulls haven’t figured that out yet. By itself, this earns the Playfield café a full extra star. However, expected disaster during the playground re-opening, and it lived up to the expectation. 25 minutes to get a cold-cut sandwich, while our clam chowder was sitting in the pick-up sill for 10 minutes. Also apparently, they couldn’t keep track of orders — I had to tell the person at pick-up what I ordered. The sandwich was pretty bland. The chowder was expectedly skimpy for the price. Overall, the café offers cold sandwiches, hot dogs, some pasteries, small pizzas, and«singapore» style stir fry(I wasn’t brave enough to try it). Again, best part of this place was that the sea gulls weren’t constantly trying to figure out how to eat you. For that alone, I might eat here again.

You’d be really hard pressed to find a worse burrito in the world. WOW! How can you mess a burrito this badly. Service is extra unfriendly and slow. When I requested a plain cup to split the fruit punch between the kids, the lady behind the counter said«we do inventory of cups. I can not give you an empty one!!!»

The SF Zoo seems to have figured out how to placate it’s captive audiences food tastes. Leaping Lemur Café for folks looking for the typical fast food choices(hamburgers, pizza, hot dogs, salads). The Playfield Café is advertised as «Asia Grill» and is next to the Chidlren’s Zoo. It has stir fry and teriyaka dishes with rice.
