Came in today and tried a short rib sandwich. At first i thought $ 12 was little expensive but when i took the first bite… I loved it!!! it was so with it! Will be coming back to try the rest of the sandwiches!

Let me set the scene: I’m wandering around on Union street trying to find a reasonable priced lunch that isn’t a vegan salad or pressed juice. Just as I’m about to give up and walk to Chestnut street for Lucca Deli, I see Backyard. I ordered the Cubano and at this point I’m completely ravenous. I’m pretty sure the lady working the counter can hear my stomach growling. After about a 10 minute wait, it is ready. I grab my sandwich and run to the park where I planned to meet my friend. As I arrive, I remembered that I forgot to grab napkins, but it is too late to turn back. I unwrap the sandwich and take a bite while meat juices from the thick cut ham drip everywhere. I have no regrets. I don’t even care that she gave me the wrong sauce.

Stopped to get a quick sandwich. Its 12:30 pm with no customers that says it all. Employee probably hated working there ordered Turkey BLT by the time I got home realize no aioli, it wasn’t heated as it was suppose to and worst part is brown lettuce. Really poor product and no customer service is probably bad recipe for any business. Give me a break paying over $ 14 for a sandwich you will expect something better. So let me summarize it was brown lettuce, 2 slice of wheat bread, turkey, cold bacon and 4 tomatoes.

MEH. Just okay. Hate saying that as I had high hopes after reviewing the pics on Unilocal. It’s a TINY place. Three stool seating inside and 4 patio style chairs outside. One person(on her cell with a TV blaring the Kardashians in the background) working the register AND preparing food. She was also just okay. I get it, not an exciting life making sandos at a tiny shop. But at least plaster a genuine smile and make some convo esp since it’s DEADSLOW and there’s no one inside the shop. She was also snacking the whole time while glued to her phone. I felt like I had invaded her living room. I ordered a turkey BLTA(plus avo), changed the bread to Dutch crunch and added cheddar. Just okay. Warm bread but really average on the inside. Something I could have easily made at home. But for $ 16? Never again. Sorry but I’m not paying that much for a regular sized, regular tasting sandwich ever again. TIP: Their menu changes so the sandwich I wanted(Golden Gate) wasn’t available anymore.

I’m really upset because I actually really like this place. However, every time I go, whether I am the only customer or the 100th customer getting a sandwich, they take at least 20 – 30 minutes to make a sandwich. I asked the lady how long it would be because I was running late to class, and she said«Just a couple minutes I’m about to take it out of the oven». 15 minutes later I’m having a panic attack and about to be very late. On top of that my boyfriend hates onions and every time asks for no onions but ends up getting what seems like extra onions on his Smokehouse. I’m really disappointed because I like their BackYard Bully with the lamb but I don’t think I want to support a business with such consistently bad service.

This place is great, lots of unique sandwich choices. I’ve had a number of them and I would suggest all except the veggie wrap. I had my first one today and the whole sandwich was so soggy I had to re-wrap it in my own paper towel to even hold, plus the sprouts were no longer crisp and crunchy. Unfortunately there was also so little cream cheese even that couldn’t save the sandwich. Great place overall just don’t get the veggie wrap.

I always come here after getting a facial across the street as a treat. The backyard bully(lamb shank, brie, arugula, red wine/raspberry) is sooooo good… I recommend it on dutch crunch. Even their spa water is good. It’s a hearty portion, so I enjoy half the sandwich at the little bar, and pack the other half for later. The staff is always super nice and welcoming.

Not a great experience here at Back Yard. Service was sooo slow. The place is connected to The Brickyard, I think it’s probably the same owners. It’s pretty small, only 3 bar chairs inside and two tables with a couple chairs each outside. The sandwiches were OK quality, I got the smokehouse which had pretty good sauce, but the chicken wasn’t fantastic and make my stomach not feel very great. The worst part of my experience here was the service. There were only a few people who ordered in front of me, but it took 40 minutes to get my sandwich. 40 minutes. Definitely not worth it for that kind of wait. I won’t be going back here again.

Slowest service ever. Our receipts said we ordered at 1:42pm and we didn’t get our sandwiches until 2:22pm. There were 4 people in front of us… does it really take almost 7 minutes to make one sandwich? The sandwiches are decent but in no way worth the 40 minute wait.

Fresh, delicious, and great portions!!! I have had the Golden Gate and the Veggie wrap and both were scrumptious. The Golden Gate is the best because it is made on Dutch Crunch, which I never had before and it is life-changing.

Got the turkey blta and manwich which were both very tasty. A little on the expensive side if we hadn’t gotten the discounts, which means standard for San Francisco. The Dutch crunch is awesome, it’s actually sweet and crunchy! Generally good, fresh ingredients. Cute shop front too. Would definitely come back if we’re in the neighborhood!

Are BYK’s sandwiches delicious? Totes magotes. Do I wish they were slightly bigger to fill me up? Well duh, but I could probably use some work on my portion control anyhow… I’m still a huge fan though due to the quality of the sandwiches and the attention to detail of the kitchen — you won’t find those sloppily made sandwiches swimming in sauce here! This small, cozy store offers a variety of sandwiches(and salads) loaded with fresh and well-balanced ingredients. It’s more of a takeout place with just three stools at the counter, but there’s a couple of tables outside. Really nice service, dangerously delicious looking cookies. Tip: since their sandwiches are made to order and it’s a small operation, I’d suggest calling ahead to save yourself a few minutes of wait time during peak hours. BYK’s got themselves a new regular!

EDIT — I’ve increased my review from 1 star to 2 stars, because the restaurant business manager has reached out to me with an apology, and more than that, they worked with our caterer and my company to pay for testing to assure that I was not injured or given an illness through contact with the contaminated food. While I will not change the original content of my review, I will say that I feel that the business has wonderful customer service and problem resolution. Original Review Content: — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — – WARNING: UNSANITARYFOODPREP We had catering from here today at my office. Normally, I like this place. However, I was really surprised when I bit into my BLTA and realized there was something in my sandwich that was NOTFOOD. On spitting it out, I found that in between slices of turkey was a used, nasty, bloody band aid. Someone prepping food had a finger injury and lost their disgusting band aid in a sandwich. Then, instead of looking for it, they just let it go! Like how do you not notice your bloody band aid is missing? Seriously? Thanks. Catering prep workers obviously do not wear gloves, which while not legally required, should be an obvious requirement when you have a gaping wound. I guess it’s fine to touch 30 peoples lunches with bloody finger injuries. Then, if they happen to find their nasty bandage missing, they don’t even bother to check to see if they lost it in the sandwich they were just putting together. God forbid they remake a few sandwiches instead of risking a health hazard or poisoning a client. My company has already removed this from our food rotation, and filed a complaint with our catering service, but I’m seriously disgusted. I’m following up my Unilocal review with a report to the health department, since this restaurant obviously does not care that their workers touch the food they serve with dirty bandages and bleeding wounds.

Amazing! Place has a rustic vibe. I got the BLTA Sandwich and loved it. Great quality thick cut turkey and fresh produce. Would definitely come back

Got a catered lunch from here today, one of the better lunches we’ve had. I had the Union Street Veg wrap — it had sprouts and some awesome cream cheese, so the net effect was pretty solid. I also had the spinach & goat cheese salad, and I really liked that this place gave the different components of the salad in different containers so everyone could customize it. Others thought the meat sandwiches were especially good, so they may even rate this place at a five. You can check out their full menu here, the one on Unilocal is currently(as of 2÷2÷14) a bit outdated: I want to go back and try the veggie sandwich, toasted on ciabatta(as opposed to the veggie wrap in a spinach tortilla). If I do, I’ll post an update because I have a feeling my review might go up.

I ordered the Golden Gate. It was an average chicken sandwich. I don’t think I’d go out of my way to order the same sandwich again. Also, I came during a lunch rush at about 12:15pm. The store wasn’t quite prepared for the line. There was just one person taking orders and one person making sandwiches. My sandwich took about 25 minutes to order and receive. Good think I grabbed a bag of pop chips to tide me over!

Terrible Service from the guy in the back taking calls who complains he’s too busy(absolutely no one else in the store the two times we went back. also he was not on the phone). If you mess up someone’s order and they walk all the way home to find out that they got a chicken sandwich(and they’re vegetarian), you need to own up to it, apologize and return their money. The girl at the register was sweet though. Nope. Not here. You just get to waste 30 more minutes of your day, get hungrier and try to get charged extra for a meat-less sandwich. Positive Note: The sandwiches are great! –Hungry Hungry Pongy

This is a tiny shop a couple blocks off the Marina in a quieter part of town, so it’s definitely more of a hidden gem. What BYK offers up is a variety of artisanal sandwiches that are made to order. The inside of the shop is rustic, with wood flooring, paneling, and a small countertop. Reclaimed tins and baskets also serve as utensil and board collection. Sandwiches are served up on wooden boards that you can either take outside to the sidewalk tables or just stay at the counter to eat. I came in on a Monday lunch, and there was no one else there except the staff. I asked if this was a slow day, and the guy said it was pretty much as normal — the place is typically slow on weekdays and picks up on the weekends. Weird, as they could be doing a really brisk take-away lunch service. In any case, I asked the staff’s opinion about which sandwiches were more popular, and I eventually settled on the lamb shank one(also upon suggestion from you fellow Unilocalers). Well, you didn’t let me down, and the sandwich was awesome. The bread was a nice baguette-style that had a nice crust and was soft on the inside. The lamb shank was nice and tender(maybe a little bit too much fat still remained in there) and paired well with that cherry spread. The arugula, aioli, and brie gave each bite a funky kick of pepper and pungency. Paired it up with a blood orange soda out on the sidewalk table, and you’ve got a recipe for a relaxing lunch spot. Would do again. Give BYK a try and support the small shops doing things exceptionally well.
