Best vegetarian menu I have seen in SF. It is varied and can even cater to meat-eaters to try fake meats. I also like the artwork — very bright and colorful!

I need to try this place when I can eat normal because the only complex carbohydrates I can consume now are from vegetables and quinoa. The menu looked great and I was very jealous of the dishes that were brought out for my party. I had Gavin w/me and a couple I recently met through mutual friends and now I’m sort of in the mix of joining Ariix. We were in San Francisco to pass out sandwiches to the homeless. We were almost done when our appetites began to call. They’re vegetarians so I Unilocaled the nearest place and ended up here. They are certainly fans of this place. What they ordered looked very good: * Nachos * Eggs Benedict * Lemon Ricotta Pancakes * Nuggets(for Gavin) * Huevos Rancheros(mine) My dish was very plain and they forgot the black beans. I know it is plain because I asked for no cheese and no tortilla strips… but still… my black beans… I also opted for tofu instead of eggs. I was on a quest to complete my 30 days of no sugar and I succeeded. I hardly eat to be full or satisfied — just eat enough to not go hungry but it’s a new concept and way of life that has proven to work(for me, that is). I’ll be back to try the Eggs Benedict. It looked so good! Service was super friendly… the server was super cute.

This is a great, casual vegetarian restaurant. I frequently get their«neat loaf» because I like it so much, but I have also ordered a number of other things that I have mostly liked.(One exception was a curry that was watery without much flavor, but I have had curry on other occasions here that was good.) If you love cheese, their quesadilla seemingly has a third of a pound of cheese in it! Their basic salad with homemade lemon tahini dressing is quite good. As for the ambiance, it’s quite busy during lunch on weekdays. It basically feels like a diner inside with the exception of the photos and artwork on the walls.(I’m not sure what religion this restaurant is associated with, but it has a sort of eastern mysticism vibe about it.) Don’t go here expecting anything fancy. Go here expecting tasty vegetarian food, served in good sized portions at reasonable prices.

Amazing food and tea. I had their Mushroom curry dinner for Brunch and was pleasantly surprised by how tasty and flavorful the food was. If you really want to treat yourself, go for the Chai tea. It is simply amazing. I really love the atmosphere as well. It is very peaceful. They have an indoor fountain, the restaurant is very clean and they have books on mindfulness and meditation for you to read. Overall, great experience. I will be back many times.

As someone who usually shy away from vegan/vegetarian restaurants, I was very impressed with Ananda Fuara and look forward to eating here again the next time I am in SF! My husband and I came here the day after our wedding for a fun and casual brunch get-together with our close friends. The owner and staff were able to accommodate all of us on a Saturday morning.(Since they don’t usually take reservations, one of our friends kindly called a few weeks in advance to let them know that a large, friendly, yet hungry crowd was coming their way!) The food was both delicious and FULL-filling(and I don’t usually say this about vegetarian dishes). For breakfast foods I typically prefer savory over sweet so I ordered the Breakfast Burrito(hearty and comforting, the way a burrito should always be). Hubby ordered the Wild Mushroom Benedict(an absolute dream for any truffle oil lover). As someone who loves to take food pics, I am ashamed to admit that I finished everything on my plate before I remembered to take out my camera…(perhaps I will do better next time). Side note: In regards to their«poor food safety score», no one in our group had any complaints or tummy aches… Hopefully their rating will go up soon!

I’ve been dining here for years… try the neatloaf meal not the sandwich, although the sandwich is good too. I like to start off with the chicken nuggets and bbq sauce:) it gets busy so don’t go around peak times…

I have eaten from here in the past with no problem However as I was posting this there was a warning that this restaurant has a low food safety warning and it’s no wonder why Yesterday I ordered the neatloaf dinner and soup and salad along with the yogi tea and slice of cake Once I placed my order I received a phone call back asking me what flavor of cake that I would like and out of the three options I chose the mango and they also asked me for my salad what kind of dressing I wanted and out of those choices I chose the lemon dressing so then about maybe a half hour after that I received my order First I had the yogi tea which was really really good then I had the soup which I didn’t care for too much it had vegetables and some kind of coconut milk so the soup I did not like however I finished all of it then I tried the new loaf and it was not that great mashed potatoes came with that and that in the mushroom gravy was not really that great either then after this I tried the salad with the lemon dressing and lemon dressing was really good but there wasn’t enough of it and so it tastes kind of boring and the last thing I had was the Mango cake in this was way too sugary I didn’t really like it that much with all the sugar Two hours later my stomach started cramping and I threw up a total of three times within a 2 hour time frame By the next day I was alright I will order again from here once the rating goes up But the only thing I will order again will be the yogi tea next time I will try ordering something else to eat like the potatoes or hummus

Me saying that ambiance matters isn’t the same as me saying a place must be fancy or outfitted by Ken Fulk. All I ask is that it appeal to my senses in some way, not assault or insult them. Ananda Fuara straddles that line of taste. I’m not certain what they could’ve done with the space but what they’ve done with it makes me immediately downgrade expectations upon entering. Five years ago Unilocaler Ed U. described the décor as «1970’s-era motel-breakfast-buffet», and that same description remains spot-on even today. And then there’s that health score. Last time I received a grade in anything, 66 out of 100 was a «D». A «D» is a sorry score in both school and the kitchen. The only way a «D» looks like an acceptable place to eat is when you’re trying to escape whatever that 3-person meth-enhanced situation was that you just passed 10 giant steps from Ananda Fuara’s front door. At that moment, 66⁄100 looks like a step up. Bucking the trend of seemingly every other Unilocaler I bypassed the«Neatloaf» and all other things faux-meat. I skipped the menu’s sandwich and wraps categories as well; they hold little appeal for me. I focused on the unsung portion of the menu, «Salads», opting for the regular size Mexican Salad(about $ 10) which, to my amazement, tasted pretty old-school-healthy-food-good owing much of its flavor to large dollops of guacamole, sour cream, and pico de gallo. Table mates who had Dal(always offered) found it good, spicy, and filling. One who had a salad topped with faux-chicken was less kind. «Reconstituted inner-tubes» was, I believe, her remark. A side of bread, brought out upon request to accompany the Dal was literally just that: a piece of wheat bread fresh from it’s plastic Safeway bag or so it appeared. Bread served in restaurants rarely appears looking like such an afterthought. Ananda Fuara is a longtime staple of the Civic Center area serving vegetarian food that’s basically good but does little to trump their décor or health department score. I’d not refuse to lunch here again but I’d first try to steer my party over to nearby Azalina where, for similar prices, I find the food, ambiance, and health score far outshines that of Ananda Fuara.

Vegan, in the not so civic center, of the city. It had been on my list of places to try for years. We came here for brunch on our way out of town. It’s close proximity to the Asian Art Museum,(which we were touring after), City Hall, and the Orpheum Theatre,(places we visited) made it a convenient choice. The area isn’t bad during the day, but come nightfall it’s a bit dodgy. Service was extremely slow. We ordered food to-go, and the way our server packaged it seemed odd and wasteful. Peculiar service … but wholesome food.

I’m always on the lookout for veggie restaurants when I travel, so when I saw this near my meeting, I decided to check it out. I was at first dubious since I was greeted with a peculiar, unpleasant smell when I walked in, but I got over that and was very pleasantly surprised at the nice lunch I had. I ordered the«turkey» avocado wrap. I’m usually down on wraps given that so many of them are so boring, but this wrap could rival a Chipotle burrito in size. Not to mention that it tasted way better! It was so big that I planned to take half with me. But it was so good that I ended up eating it all.

Looking for a place to escape the rain and to grab a light late lunch, the bf and I stumbled upon this place coming out of Bart. The restaurant had just finished up with a large party of about 20 people(I hate large parties that goes to small restaurants, they took up about half of the normal occupancy). Our server took our order fairly quickly and proceeded to finish with the large party, which appears that everyone paid separately. We both ordered genmaicha and did not realized we’d each our own iron pot of tea. We finished our pots of tea and still did not get our food. I would not have known how long it has been since we ordered if I had no checked in on Unilocal right after ordering. Unilocal stated I checked in 30 mins ago. The bf was dying of hunger pain so I waved a different server over to refill our teapot since we didn’t see our original server. We were hoping the tea would hold our hunger over. After a bit, he came by and told us that he’s really sorry, that our food will be super fast and free, and that our server had gone to lunch without putting in our order. Now it made sense that our sandwich and wrap was still not ready after 30 minutes. The lemon tahini dressing was indeed delicious like other reviewers have stated. Our chicken pesto wrap and chicken salad sandwich was pretty good too, but we were starving so anything would have been good. Our original server came back and happened to be the guy that I caught the attention of when we wanted our bill. It appears that he had printed out our check and his supervisor called him over to get lectured at for a few minutes at the corner. He came by n apologized and said our meal was free. I felt bad for him n said we wanted to at least pay for our tea. Not saying it was excusable, but he was probably super tired from serving the large party. But he should have made sure everything was done before heading to an extended break. It was a nice gesture from the supervisor to comp our meal though. Bf was not happy with waiting 45 minutes for his wrap though.

This is a great place to get into your vegetarian/vegan groove in the heart of The City. Lots of good vegetarian and vegan options, including some ever changing daily specials. I especially like the Neatloaf.

Influenced by one of my closest friend’s to try a vegan spot and this is such a cute little place! — Super helpful & kind staff — Amazing food — Friendly environment with plenty of seating — Great service — Plus, no wait on a weekend?! My friend and I had the teriyaki mushroom boca burger and while it was pretty great(with a side!) what I absolutely fell in love with was their vegan chocolate cake! It’s definitely known to be a favorite and it tells you so on their website– it’s definitely worth trying! Absolutely would visit again!

First things first: I’m not even close to being a vegetarian, but I enjoy trying new things and experiences.. So, I had a pseudo chicken wrap with some potato corners as sides and sadly it was pretty bland and unspectacular, not what i was hoping for really… Pro: — Nicely sized portions(large). — Interesting mix of dishes. Con: — Very slow staff. — Could use some decoration. — Very bland meal. Apparently the area here is pretty«dodgy»(or so i was told), but I noticed nothing unnormal — it looked like most parts of SF to me. Would I come again? I doubt it.

This restaurant starts off at a disadvantage. It’s located super near the Civic Center which means a dodgy element on the sidewalk outside. So you need to be in the area to go here. But hey, it’s tech central which means diners were a diverse mix of plaid shirts n skinny jeans. It’s cheap and cheerful, bright décor and friendly service. Prices are good, around $ 10.50 for a giant chicken salad sandwich which entails a box. Now this is the first fake chicken salad I’ve seen in a menu ever. They mixed house mayo with toasted bread and dressing. Yum. The bread was warm, slightly cheesy or buttery. And the food was solid and filling. Not vegetarian healthy but everyday healthy. Note: I’m the type of vegetarian who sees pizza as a food group. I enjoyed my lunch, didn’t feel rushed and service was quick. Recommending if you’re in the area.

Nice place that we found per coincidence. I was very hungry on Sunday morning and in desperate need of brunch. We mistakenly ended up at a Roastery before, that just served muffins on the side and I wanted something more filling and satisfying. Upon looking at Unilocal,we found this place nearby and decided to give it a go. Now I am not a Vegetarian or Vegan, but I am open to try things and anyone can find something to eat in a Veggie Restaurant. We were the first customers of the day, as the place opens at 11 so taking orders and getting our food didn’t take long, thank God! I opted for the Scrambled Eggs and wanted Mozarella in it, which was not a problem. It gets served with potatoes and corn tortillas, which made me very happy, as I am wheat-intolerant. It tasted good, but it didn’t blow me away with presentation or taste. Just a simple breakfast. There are, however a lot more pleasing breakfast options, for people with no gluten issues, such as pancakes and french toast. And I have to admit, they looked a-mazinnngg!!! I skimmed through the menu and also saw other options such a humus, wraps and salads. A nice spot, if you are somewhere in the hood!

The owner(I believe) welcomed us very fast and was quite friendly. So many things were on the menu that it was hard to choose: wraps(with vegan chicken, hummus, falafels…), burgers, salads, sandwiches, curries, brunch options… After hesitating between the Napa Salad(with glazed walnuts and cranberries) and the Veggie burger, I picked the Veggie burger the first time that I went, after seeing a pic on Unilocal. The patty looked so big + yummy! It sure was, it was very soft though(not that it’s a bad thing). I asked for whole wheat bread thinking it would still be a bun but it was not: it was two slices of whole wheat sandwich bread, which kinda disappointed me. I should’ve asked. The second time I went, I ordered the burger with the regular bun and OMG yeah… TOOYUMMY! Don’t miss out on it. My husband had the curry wrap of the day. It was BIG! The tortilla and the mandarin chutney tasted so fresh. Many vegan dessert options, like devil food cake, cookies… Speaking of, the Cowboy cookie with oats, pecans and cranberries is so moist and delicious. For 2,50 $, how can you not get one? I’m looking forward to my next visits to Ananda Fuara!

What a great, understated vegetarian gem in Civic Center! Ok, the décor’s a little tacky(artificial waterfall on one wall, 80’s-modern themed furniture and colors), but my whole group really liked our meal here. Maybe not worth going out of your way for, but if you’re in the area, this strikes a great balance between being affordable and good quality. THEWAIT: None for 6 on a Saturday at noon. Note that I had come by two Saturdays before to find the restaurant closed, with the hours(including XXX on Saturday) posted right on the door, no explanation. THESERVICE: Very friendly and genuine. I just got a good vibe from our server; he didn’t interact with us too much, but he had a way about him that made me feel safe and taken care of. THECOST: $ 16 total per person; six of us each got an entrée, and four of us got diet cokes: MUST-HAVES: I only tried my Turkey Avocado Wrap, but I thought it was pretty darn good! * Turkey Avocado Wrap(normally a weekday lunch item, but our server asked the manager and I was able to get this) — 4.5 stars dish with tabouli side: cross-section: This was great. I didn’t expect a warm wrap but that was a nice surprise. I really liked the tortilla wrap – it was smooth, thick, had densely packed grains, and was lightly toasted and just one of those wraps that’s fun to bite into. The turkey meat was moist(probably better tasting than real turkey meat) and made much better by the fact that it was topped with a thick layer of cheese. I think it was a standard cheddar cheese, being quite thick/gunky and not too flavorful, but it worked well. Sandwiches: Wraps: All Day Dinners: Baked Potatoes: Brunch(pt. 1): Brunch(pt. 2): Appetizers: Salads, Soups: Next time: I might actually try the Neatloaf!

I don’t know why I waited so long before visiting Ananda Fuara. Perhaps there’s a part of me that feels like I’ll be ostracized at a Vegetarian Restaurant. I mean… I’m not an ethical eater. I’m a shameless eater. I’ll eat meat. I’ll also eat things that no man in his 30’s should still be eating. Now that I’m pushing 35, I’m feeling the pang to maybe(just a little) grow up get a little healthier. Given that I’ve worked about a block and a half away for two years, it was a shame I didn’t here come sooner. Why? Because it’s good. Veggie or no. My two(so far) visits have been for lunch. I can pack away a big meal, but I hate feeling lousy after a big lunch on a work day. The food here sits well — and is no push-over on flavor. Some food thoughts: 1. Good soup. I’ve had cups both times. The Red Lentil Dal is delicious, and on the menu every day. They rotate their daily soups. I tried Hungarian Mushroom — also excellent. They had an African Peanut that I didn’t try. 2. Neatloaf. You will read that it’s over-rated. I’m not so sure. It thought it was tasty, and the sauce(while a tad sweet) was certainly flavorful. I’ve read some knocks on the texture, but I thought it was solid if unspectacular. 3. Soy Turkey, Avocado and Cheddar Wrap. Yum. Honestly felt more like a Breakfast Burrito with the soy. Still, substantial. 4. Desserts. I had the Berry Pie. It was very good. They have lots of Veg/Vegan offerings. 5. Repeat Factor. Lot’s of other things I want to try. Samosas, Curry, Wraps, Sandwiches. I would try almost any soup based on my two samples so far. I like the environment. There’s a certain peacefulness about it. The service has been somewhat minimalist in places, but it has been very good in others. One young lady on my first visit was terrific. There is a bit of a new-aginess, and I’m sure my Dad would find it to be too«hippy» for his taste. But, I’m open-mined. Part of why I want to be somewhere with some diversity of opinion is to challenge my own understanding. And, contrary to the reporting of some, this place doesn’t come across as one step away from a cult. :) I won’t pretend to be an expert on this genre of restaurant. But, I think it’s worth a visit. I don’t think you’ll be terribly disappointed with your meal. I should have gone sooner.
