Last week we went to this place and to our surprise we hardly saw anybody in restaurant during lunch time. We all ordered Thali, some north Indian and some south Indian. But really did find much difference between them as both had Sambar and Rasam. All the dishes were very salty and service also pretty bad. I guess I’ll not go to this place anymore now. Try it at your own risk.

I am fond of South Indian food and this place satisfied my taste bud. Dosa lover would definitely love this place. I have been to this place 6 – 7 times and every time I ordered south indian thali(enuf for 2). I love their podi powder & rice combo. Must say it’s the best south indian stop in bay area. I don’t know why others gave them average 3 stars :( This restaurant deserves good. At least go once for good food.

I would give this place a negative rating if I could. Craving for some South Indian cuisine led me here and I couldn’t have picked a worse restaurant. The food is terrible and service is nonexistent. Stay away from this place.

Horrible customer service. Caution: A question like«any recommendations, whats you most popular item?» While picking up something to go, can lead to the person at the counter raising hell about the fact that you have earphones in you ear. No courtesy whatsoever.

This is next to impossible place. Pathetic service, pathetic food, pathetic place. I will not go to this place even if I am dying of hunger and this is the last place I can get the food…

Ate here last night with family and guests.(Party of six)(June, 25, 2014) Some of the dishes were horrible.(Chana Masala definitely). The Thali was pedestrian. When I gave the feedback in a polite manner saying that some dishes were not satisfactory in taste, the«manager» had a rude take it or leave it attitude. Instead of taking our feedback to see what his customers were displeased with his response was that I was an exception and he did not care. He was stupid to even say that my comments were based on the billing amount. Yes you are charging a lot for the crap but I had commented about the taste of the chana masala way right after it was served. To add insult to injury he refused to refund the mandatory 15% gratuity that was charged.

I would give this place three stars, but there are close-by Indian joints on El Camino that are just better, and I probably won’t go back here. The good points about Dosai Place lie in the cheap prices and decent Indian fast food. Fast, cheap dosa and a decent mix of chutneys were what I was looking for, and that’s what we got. Everything was pretty sub-par, but… it’s cheap. Bad points… This is clearly a family-run place, and the guys they bring in to work there either are retarded or just like to act like they are. No one seems to know really what is going on, and I saw four guys running around like chickens with heads cut off for my entire visit, with not even half of the restaurant full. After our first order, we ordered another dosa to share, and it took three times as long to come out. It was cold, so it had clearly been sitting in the back for a while. If you’re going to go here, definitely stick with dosa… don’t try to order any North Indian dishes.

Y’all are trippin with the reviews. This place is pretty good. I ordered the Thali and Masala Dosa and it tasted pretty damn good. Price was attractive as well. Seems like there are a lot of whiny posts for this restaurant. This place isn’t supposed to be some 5 star restaurant.

Worst service ever. I was told my order would be ready in fifteen minutes. I had to wait over 45 minutes to get my order. The guy at the counter(the owner) was being a asshole to all the customers.

Dirtiest restaurant I have been to. Plates and glasses are not even washed properly. Tables have food from previous customers. They don’t thoroughly clean them unless we ask. The food is not tasty either! We were served stale smelly chutney and the alu in the masala dosa was sticky and old as well. Will never eat here again.

So I’ve been here twice or so, the first I had taken dosa, nothing great just meh at the best. Then recently I’ve been here, took veg biryani and gobi65 to go. The veg biryani was clearly a rip off due to the quantity given, it was cold and tasted bad. There were really big chunks of cauliflower, which filled in almost 30% of the to go container. The gobi 65 was ridiculously oily!, i literally had to squeeze out the oil before I ate, all in all I remember collecting about half a cup of oil, it was like a game, squeeze then eat. I was thoroughly disappointed by this place, wouldn’t really suggest this place to any one.

I’ve eaten at TONS of Indian restaurants in South Bay, but this one has to be the worse so far. I usually try not to leave bad reviews for small businesses because they need all the help they can get and I want to support local businesses, but this place was horrible not merely due to mistakes, but due to sheer carelessness and a cheap attitude. I went here several months ago so this experience is from that time: The first thing I noticed when I walked in is how dirty the Dosai Place is. I reluctantly sat down(since I was already having a late dinner). We ordered a mango lassi and two Masala Dosas. The order took almost 20 minutes even though the place was almost empty. The Mango lassi tasted like yogurt with sugar and food coloring. There wasn’t even a hint of mango. The dosa was oily and crumbled upon touching it. The filling(masala) inside was minuscule. I mentioned this to a guy who looked like the manger. Instead of immediately apologizing he has the audacity to TOUCH my dosa in order to confirm what I was saying. Then he tells me that the dosa is just fine. He also tells me that the mango lassi is fine, as if I’m some 3yr old who has never had these things before. He reluctantly took my mango lassi in(didn’t replace the dosa) and brought out another one that looked and tasted EXACTLY the same. At this point, I just gave up, paid the bill and walked out. It was a small price to pay to learn a lesson: Dosai Place is terrible.

When I first moved to the bay area out from the east coast, I was excited at the sheer number of Indian — South Indian restaurants to be precise. As always I’d look forward to enjoying a delectably crisp, warm dosa with spiced aloo(potato) masala, with sambar, coconut and chili pepper chutney’s. Hot idlis swimming in warm sambar just ready to be devoured, yum! A crispy medhu vada fried to a golden brown perfection with sambar, a savory delight that can’t be eaten fast enough. I’d go to Dosai Place at least 1 once every 4 to 5 weeks, unfortunately the quality of food and service was going down as well. Every time I’d notice something I tell the guy at the cash register; he’d give me the traditional non-conforming Indian head nod; I still don’t understand if he was in agreement or disagreement, being an Indian myself this head nodding business perplexes me to no end. The last time I was at Dosai Place I mentioned to the guy at the register you have not fixed anything I will not be coming back. Yes, I realize I’m just one person who has stopped going to Dosai Place amongst the many who go there on a regular basis and they probably don’t care that I stopped going to their place. I think it’s awful when people have come to accept poor customer service as a hear to stay mantra when it comes to service at Indian restaurants. My parents and sister own restaurants so I know what I’m talking about in this realm of things. I wish I didn’t have to go find another place for dosa, but lucky for me there are plenty more places with better service. So, thanks Dosai Place in forcing err helping me find a better dosa place in the south bay.

I wish there was a way to give this place negative stars. I say so because I used to love this place when it first opened. However, since then this place has changed so much! From customer service to the food and everything in-between is just crappy. I’ve felt the place was slipping but today was the last straw. The heating was out, so the place was ice-cold, when seated we didn’t have any clean flatware. On ordering, we received the wrong orders, on requesting regular glasses instead if the small plastic coffee cups, we were told everything was dirty. What? A restaurant with no clean dishes? Makes no sense! Also, for anything else we requested, we were told they had run out. Quite mystifying… And unsettling considering they had run out of stuff just when the restaurant had opened(we were there at 6pm), were we being served old, left overs? Bottom line, very disappointing place.

Honestly, I don’t even care where I am if I can eat masala dosa with spicy pickle. Masala Dosa is the dish, if the orders of the other customers were any indication. How can such a perfect food be possible? Gigantic, crispy, slightly sour pancake thing enveloping savory, mushy, turmeric yellow, potatoes. Salty lassi. I just ate lunch and now I am thinking of the next time I get to eat dosa. I kind of like the full– wall photo montage. It says, ‘I love India!’ and when I eat dosa I think, «I love India!’ too. (Note: Knows next to nothing about Indian food or India, except that it is huge and the typical Indian dishes we know in America are probably all from one specific region.)

For a bay area indian restaurant, especially one whose speciality is dosa, Dosai was very disappointing and I expected a lot better, especially since dosa is one of my favorite dishes. Firstly, I took off one star because of the décor. Usually, I am not bothered by this aspect of a restaurant, yet I truly did not understand what this place was going for when I walked inside the doors. The color scheme, design, and to be brutally honest, even the logo of the restaurant, make me feel as if I am in a kid’s place such as McDonald’s or Burger King. I half-expected to see a play structure nearby. I understand that this restaurant serves casual food but even Saravanna Bhavan and Udupi Palace’s interiors don’t look that childish. I took off another star because of the food itself. I got a mysore masala dosa, which was very bland, which should never be the case with mysore masala dosa in any dosa restaurant no matter where you are. I don’t know what kind of spices they used, but they completely lacked taste and, as with all indian food, greatly affected the flavor of the dish. What saves this restaurant from getting more stars taken off is the fact that their prices are pretty reasonable for the food you get. If I lived nearby and had no car, then this place might be slightly appealing. Nevertheless, this restaurant greatly needs to work on their food and overall appeal if they want to compete with nearby indian restaurants such as Saravanaa Bhavan or Udupi Palace.

As it’s name proclaims, this place aims to carve out a niche for itself as the ‘go to’ place for a wide selection of dosas. The dosas here are pretty good. In fact, I haven’t really found a place yet that serves the dosas that parallel in taste the ones you would get in the Adigas and Sarvana Bhavans back in India, but this place definitely makes an attempt. This place has a decent kids menu, my son had a plate of puris(three mini puris, perfect for a small child) and a plate of mini idlis. Many other Indian restauarants I have been to don’t even carry a kids menu at all. I have upped a star for this reason alone. The sides are delicious, I loved their sambhar and their chutneys(yes, yummy coconut chutney). In its attempt to provide the widest possible selection of dosas to its customers, they have created different combinations of dosas, with some unique stuffings, like gobi manchurian dosa… then there is a twist on the Masala Dosa, called Madras Masala which is nothing but a regular masala dosa with some spice smeared into it. Some of these creations work and some don’t. I would stick with their regular Masala Dosa, Onion Rava, Rava dosa, Mysore Masala Dosa or cheese dosa. I’ve liked their thalis too. This place has a nice family ambience to it. Don’t worry if your kids make a noise here!!! It’s very kid friendly. Also, the staff are polite and courteous. I like this place and will be back.
