HOLYMOLY! Why am I just discovering this place?! This is the place to be; one of the few true music stores in Texas. Living in San Antonio there are just a handful of places within a hour drive to get music including vinyl, CDs, etc. This place has a great variety of vinyl from literally all genres including new and used. They also carry CDs but have a smaller selection when compared to vinyl. The prices are fair and they even offer a vinyl happy hour everyday with prices up to 30% off. On this first visit, the staff was friendly and helpful with questions that were asked. It’s nice to peruse the aisles and ask questions without some record store music snob looking down on you, which has been my experience at other records stores in Texas. I also noticed the store features live music performances from some fairly popular Texas acts. With the place being a small store, it would be cool to catch some of these shows. I highly recommend this place to any music lover as you will definitely find something you like.

From the name I thought Lonestar was a country vinyl store but I like Lonestar beer and Johnny Cash so I decided to check it out. I was specifically looking for Jay Reatard albums on vinyl, which I haven’t had much luck finding in store. Not only was there a tab for Jay Reatard but they had every one of his albums in stock on vinyl and CD! All the crates were organized and they had so many different types of genres. I liked the way it was set up. There was a lot of moving space and I wasn’t suffocated by vinyl. Cool spot! I’ll be coming by again!

Love this place. This has become one of my favorite places in San Marcos. Why? Oh let me count the ways. 1) Live local music for FREE and when I went to see a bitchin’ band by the name of Texas Renegade(check them out seriously) they had Lone Star on tap for free for the patrons(albeit you have to show your ID). 2) Vinyl. I just love record stores, they make me feel eclectic and worldly while transporting me to music heaven. They have a good selection and the prices are spot on. I could browse for hours. 3) Dollar records. Yes when I searched I found one titled«The Best of Polka Music,» as if there is such a thing and another titled«Aerobic Music» yea no thanks but since I like listening to classical records while reading I found three records that I didn’t yet have for only $ 3. I am a fan. 4) Everyone I’ve encountered there is nice and just loves music and appreciates that you are buying local so therefore appreciates you. 5) Wood. And no I’m not talking about the female chubs I got when I first discovered this place but the wood beams that Texas Renegade played in front of with the signage of other bands that had previously played. Plus there are just enough wood beams to make it feel a bit rustic and warm without being a beacon for hipsters, much appreciated. 6) A diverse crowd. Nothing I like less than when I walk into a place I should thoroughly enjoy only for my happy place to be thwarted by an over-concentration of hipster or redneck. Muchos gracias Superfly, you’re a perfect 5 in my book and I will frequent your establishment again & again.

Just a beautiful spot. I’m in love with homegrown Texas music and they have just about every CD that could possibly be in print, including obscurities and older stuff, plus they’ve got shirts, books, and other merch that’s relevant to the genre. Bonus points for how often the local talents show up for free performances, but what really puts it over the top — especially relative to the already-pretty-sweet spot they previously had in Gruene — is that huge selection of new and used vinyl records. Which, unlike the CDs, isn’t pigeonholed by genre at all … lots of new stuff, huge variety.

Awesome idea. Only in Texas kind of place with an amazing selection of used country LPs and new off-kilter country CDs(Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clark, Billy Joe Shaver, Terry Allen). Two reasons for four and not five stars: 1. they don’t carry used CDs 2. they don’t carry the direct Western Swing and Hard Country influences of their current stock on CD. Unconditionally recommended for any country music fan.

Superfly’s isn’t the same record store as Sundance. I think anyone expecting quite that level of awesome is only kidding themselves. Gone is the over-the-top visual overload of posters, dangling vinyl overhead, and memorabilia that so typified the Sundance experience. Superfly’s atmosphere is far more subdued, and almost sterile, relatively speaking. Selection is minimalist in CDs, but apparently overwhelming in vinyl. Once again, as was the case with Sundance, well over half the store – and probably 75% of the inventory – is dedicated to that species. New CD prices are standard record store fare, which is to say pretty much list price. There is a small bargain bin of CDs that are $ 6.99 and under. I didn’t shop the vinyl, but they seem to have a decent selection of new cuts and a ginormous selection of used. You’ll see a wire rack of new CD releases, which makes for ease of polycarbonate shopping, but I found a few gaps at lunchtime on a Wednesday, which was a bit disappointing. There is also a small display where each of the staff members gets to showcase their picks. I came across an unusually disproportionate supply of Curtis Mayfield’s «Superfly» on hand in several locations in the store. Go figure. ;) The staff mostly keep to themselves, but will typically offer their help at least once a visit, and they do play decent cuts in-store to keep you in the buying mood. Friendly, and reasonably efficient checkout to boot. All-in-all, I’m just happy that we have a record store this close to campus, and that’s what tips the balance to a four-star experience. If we can’t have our Sundance, Superfly’s is truly the next best thing.

I can’t pass a record store without taking a look, and this one’s directly across the street from campus, so I’m sure it gets a lot of traffic. They stock a large number of new Indy music and commercial CDs, along with vinyl, box sets, and other interesting merchandise. On the day we were there, a local band was playing in-store, with a crowd of their fans gathered around. A board outside had a number of bands scheduled to play all through the day and evening. Music brings the world together. Looks like a great place to hang out. Definitely worth a stop.

Awesome record store if you are looking for Texas Country/Red Dirt music. They have lots of shirts to pick from and you can get autographed CD’s and LP’s there as well. Easy to find and they have their own parking lot. I will go back if I am back in there area next time.

Admittedly, I didn’t realize they had left Gruene for San Marcos until a friend came to town and was searching for them. We took a quick trip to San Marcos and I was pleasantly surprised to find they were located in the old Sundance Records store. Although they still feel a bit bare, the store is updates, remodeled, clean, and very nice. The staff was very friendly and the prices were on mark with their competitors. Nice selection of box sets, merch, and vinyl as well. Will definitely return.
