If it weren’t for the fantastic waiter, I would have rated this place a four stars. Your waiter may vary. First off, the place is very obscure. The sign is super small and I had to do a power slide to get into the parking lot without missing it. Since it is right on the frontage road, if you miss it you are in for a long drive to circle back around. Sunday night and the place was pretty empty. Clean and super pleasant staff. The waiter was as genuinely friendly as they can get. The edamame was a bit mushy as if it were boiling too long. Everything else was a home run. I had the nom-nom sushi as an appetizer. It was just as good as everyone raves. It has a LOT of sauce on it, so if you want fresh sushi taste, this is not for you. I had the daily fish special which was salmon. It was a huge piece of fish. The veggies with it were well cooked and they all had a nice flavorful asian sauce of some kind I can’t name. My wife had an Albert’s special sushi. I think it was the three crab one at the bottom of the menu. The thing was gigantic and she even had to take some home. You never question your wife, but I kept thinking it would creep me out to take sushi home for later. Hey, she’ll eat it later when I’m not around. Anyway — when served it was very, very good. My wife gave me a piece to try and I loved it. It could easily be a meal for 1 – 2 people.

This is a little hole in the wall place, but do not let that deter you! We started out w/a complimentary cup of onion soup, which was very tasty. It could have used a few more mushrooms, but that is b/c I love mushrooms. Hubs had the sashimi appetizer which was a nice portion. Then he had some rolls which were very good. He was a little sad they didn’t have any mackerel, but at the same time, the menu is not short on options. I had the jumbo shrimp and vegetables w/fried rice. The shrimp and veggies were really good(cooked, but not over cooked) and has just the right amount of sauce. The fried rice is hibachi style and if I lived here, I’d be coming for that quite often. The service was also very nice-friendly and hospitable. All and all, a happy experience! Guess we’ll have to come back this way again, sooner rather than later.

This place was great as far as I recall. I was exited to experience some type of fusion between the two styles of food which both are great but together; Japaneese and Latin together. Sorry I didn’t take pics or write the review at the resturant durning the meal. I just know enjoy the food there

My absolute favorite place to treat myself to sushi. Customer service is AWESOME! Food is AWESOME!!! AND their house made spicy mayo is to die for! Every time I go in there, at least one of the employees remember you. There have been a couple times I’ve had to wait maybe 10 extra minutes on a pick up order, but the servers offered me free soup & a soda while I wait for the inconvenience. The sex on the beach roll is kind of expensive for $ 12 but TOTALLY worth it! I give this place 5 stars for customer service & quality of food! Do yourself a huge favor and just avoid Kobe(across I-35), and just come here.

Just tried this restaurant for the first time yesterday and loved it. I’m not a big sushi fan, but the menu is extensive and there’s something for everyone. I got a «box» lunch special with california rolls, salad, tempura shrimp and veggies, rice, pot stickers, wasabi sauce-it was absolutely delicious. My husband got a box lunch that included cubed steak that was tender and flavorful. It also came with miso or onion soup. We got the miso and it was great. Nice ambience, good service and great food. We’ll be back.

If you aren’t a sushi eater, try the Audra roll with soy paper. It may convert you, like it did me. I actually crave it now! The rest of my family loves this place so much.

Best sushi in San Marcos/Austin area without a doubt. The prices are good, the service is great and the owners are very friendly. They deliver too! The sushi is always so fresh, and of you come for happy hour you can create your own roll. Literally I’ve asked for 5 – 6 types of fish at once. They will do it. If you go anywhere else in town you’re missing out BIG time.

I absolutely LOVE sushi! So when I was scrolling through Unilocal and this one popped up, I had to try it out. And let me tell you, this place is so soooo good! I took my girlfriend in during happy hour and we got 3 different rolls for 25 $ plus Miso soup, pretty good deal. For the happy hour deal there were about 9 different rolls to choose from, and they all sounded so good. We decided on The Caterpillar, Live Eel, and Nom Nom. They all were full of flavor! Very appealing to the eye and the mouth! I’m definitely going to come back! Don’t forget to check in and get 5% off your order!

Tried this for the first time on New Year’s after running all over town, and it didn’t disappoint. Charming interior décor and lots of seating. Wendy was marvelous and I really hope to see her again when we return. Food didn’t take too long, although I think the other three tables were finishing up as we arrived. Sat down to happy hour menus and complimentary miso(with tofu and chives, the alternative was onion soup); chose pork gyoza and ebi Spring rolls as 2/$ 10 starters. Enjoyed the hot sake(3 small total between the two of us). Went on to select Flying Pig(pork belly in ponzu sauce I think?) from the special plates and Scallop Killer and Honey Seaweed rolls from the sushi list. When the starters came out under stacks of cabbage I thought I’d miscalculated quantity-wise and we’d each be carrying two to-go boxes home. All was well, though, as both plates were delectable and the fried spring rolls won me over despite having shrimp. The pork belly is amazing. If we had ordered just a platter of that to split we still would have walked out on a cloud of bliss and remembered this meal for years. It is dangerously, melt-in-your-mouth tasty. Do not expect the Scallop Killer roll to be stuffed with scallops. They are a minor part of a tasty roll full of surprising texture. The vegetarian Honey Seaweed was a pleasant surprise for me, filling and fascinating, and I happily ate it without soy. My highly carnivorous husband actually asked to finish this roll, offering his remaining scallops in trade. Despite all this bounty he still had room for green tea ice cream, which came out under a little cloud of whipped cream and chocolate sauce to knock it back into the realm of Western saccharine desserts. The tab before tip was about $ 65. Pricier than Jin’s, but also more attentive service and some different dishes, plus beautiful presentation. We could also have saved real bucks with the 3/$ 25 sushi roll offer for happy hour, but you can’t make me regret that Flying Pig. I may not be in every week but you *will* see me back here.

Weird name, cute story. They met at Kobe Steak House and decided to open their own place. We love this because we use to go to Kobe until their customer service completely tanked. Our overall experience here was great. I started with the cocktail cup. It had a tittle too much cocktail sauce but overall flavor was nice. We ordered the California roll ad Tiger roll. Both were delicious and we have decided this is our new Sushi spot.

Wanted to give a 3.5 but that’s not available. Service was super friendly and quick. We were seated right away and received an option of a complimentary soup — you can choose from onion or miso. Both were good. Not sure where the«Latino» part of the restaurant name came from, but plenty of sushi and hot dishes to choose from. My friend got the chicken teriyaki and it came with a side salad and side veggies. He said it was pretty good. My other friend and I got the seafood dynamite roll(shrimp tempura and cream cheese topped with scallop, crawfish tails and jalapeño slices) and the Nom NOM roll(cream cheese, crab mix, avocado and deep fried with the sauces) and both were good. Pretty fresh for middle of nowhere. My other friend got the curry noodles and he did not like it. Said it wasn’t the flavor he was expecting. Restrooms were dirty and the doors to each stall were more like curtains. Weird.

They have a wide selection of sushi and they also serve alcohol! I enjoy their gyoza appetizer dish(4.25~) for 8 pieces is pretty good! The service there never fails to disappoint me. I went on my birthday and got some free vanilla ice cream. This place does not disappoint.

Ok. Once again I have stumbled upon a place where I can’t find a con. When I can’t find a con and they’re just that damn outstanding, I have to take you step by step through my experience so that you can sit back and say to yourself, «Damn… I gotta get me some of that!» I mean hey, they deserve it. I love giving good reviews. Ok so I’m in San Marcos, Texas for the first time. I didn’t even know Texas had a San Marcos. Shout out to San Marcos, California! Love ya. Anywho, So i’m here and my friend is literally hungry to the point of just about turning into a goober. To make matters more… interesting, She’s a vegetarian. I know what you’re thinking, «J.B., what in the world could you do with your Naturally Selected powers to fix this situation and get her fed before midnight!» Well as we were paroosing the all powerful Unilocal,I stumbled upon Japan Latino Sushi N Steak. I’ll admit my thoughts were, «How bad could it be? I know… it COULD be seven shades of hell. But she’s über picky and it has sushi, beer, Latino’s and Japanese. I like my odds on this ethnically bipartisan restaurant. And then we got lost. In a parking lot I decided to call. On the phone came Matthew who’s demeanor was kind, pleasant and informative. We had no problem finding our way after 2 minutes of his instruction. Using my night time ninja driving moves, I maneuvered the car into a parking spot and we entered the restaurant. The décor was mixed vibes of Latin and Japanese. Imagine a Sushi Bar in a Taco shop… a well put together taco shop. Anyway… the vibes were good. Matthew was as awesome as awesome could be. he came over and guided us through the menu. It was well received because it saved time and pointed out the hidden treasures and it’s always fun to try something new in a sushi restaurant. We started with a good bowl of Miso soup and then the first piece of visually enticing food porn showed up. It looked like ceviche, tasted like ceviche but had a little more. I really couldn’t put my finger on it… so I just kept eating. And eating. No worries, like a good Unilocaler, I took a pic before I deflowered this appetizer. It was a satisfying way to start the evening. Matthew arrived to take our order and we went with the Monkey brains and the Sexy Shrimp roll(or something like that… how about you go and ask Matthew. use the pic I took and he’ll hook you up). When the food came it looked and tasted absolutely beautiful. Monkey Brains were awesome. I sat in my chair like a little happy zombie dipping my brains in eel sauce. Yum. Matthew was so personable that we welcomed his visits and it felt like we were dining in a restaurant our friend worked at. Matthew was now«our friend Matthew». Dude is creative, clever, friendly, and just about had me running to the restroom to undo my top button so I could try to fit dessert down my throat. I sided with sanity and chose instead to bookmark the restaurant, write this review, and plan to return the next time I’m in town or passing through. To sum it up. The décor was friendly, the service was seriously on point, and the food was amazing. I’m curious about all the stuff I haven’t tried. It was definitely worthy of 4 stars but I’m giving it 5 because I didn’t see a down side and they need to keep doing what they are doing. Note: Matthew exhibited the way waiting should be. To accompany that statement, we didn’t come there with bad attitudes and a no tip frame of mind. Good vibes begat good vibes and an amazing time was had by all. Keep it up Matthew and we will be back.

Stopped over here on my mini road trip with mom over the weekend. They have a happy hour every day from 2−6pm so we were able to take advantage of that. Appetizers were 2 for $ 10 so we got some angry edamame and the lettuce cup with chicken. They both came out pretty quickly, I liked the sriracha sauce used on the edamame, it had a little something extra in there that I could not place my finger on… but tasted extra garlicky and saucy. The actual edamame was over cooked and a bit soggy and not crisper as I like them but it was fine. The lettuce cups were good, the chicken seasoned nicely and diced into small pieces and the lettuce was fresh. I am not sure if both were worth the $ 10 but you think you are getting a deal then you go for it. Then they have 3 sushi rolls from a set list for $ 25…so we tried the tokyo, live eel and nom nom. They were all cooked in one sense or another and had alot of sauce on them… so usually not my preferred rolls to get but my mom liked them all. I thought some of the sauces were overpowering and sweet. But enjoyed the live eel with the tempura flakes. The nom nom had spicy tuna with cream cheese and a crab lightly fried, that was a huge roll and fairly decent but I did not taste the spicy tuna. The tokyo was sweet potato and crab baked on top with cheese, that wasn’t too bad either. So all in all it was OK for the price and not many places around here so it could be worse. They had some other interesting menu items but I did not see where they got the latino part of their restaurant name as there wasn’t anything very latino on the menu I thought. Our server was very very nice and attentive which is why I bumped it up a star.

I’ve been back to JL many times since my last review and I have to say… It keeps getting better and better. In all honesty. Like serrrrrsssllyyyyy Every time it go I get something different and it is surely not a let down. Although my go to is the cocktail cup. Guilty… BUT, I did try something new: take out. And I must say it was just as good as if I were to have eaten in house. Given you don’t have as nice of a presentation but the quality of the sushi was up to par. To me, that is hard to do when ordering takeout. Many restaurants just half-ass it if you’re not dining in and then charge you extra. Not in the this case I’m afraid. Also, I heard that JL has plans of EXPANSION?! Brilliant.
