Great street food! They’re sort of like quesadillas. I wanted to try loroco, but I guess it was so popular that they ran out.

I recently worked with Pupusas Express to cater an event and overall, it was a great experience. I knocked a star off because there wasn’t a particularly high level of structure/professionalism in regards to doing catering, and I was honestly a little worried that it would all fall through and we’d have to order pizza. That didn’t happen though, and now that I’ve worked with them once, I would definitely work with them again. The pupusas were FANTASTIC. We ordered WAY more pupusas than we thought it would be possible for our group to consume, but somehow still ended up without leftovers. People were wrapping them up and putting them in their purses on their way out. They were really flexible on the ingredients. We had them make some vegan ones, which were actually the most popular, and many of our guests were relieved that there wasn’t any pork in the spread(a usual ingredient for pupusas). Also of note was that they catered the event for a ridiculously low price. We were substantially under our already tiny budget, which seemed like a kind of miracle.

We found Pupusas Express at the Doggie Street Festival today. The ladies at the stand were busy making fresh hot papusas so I couldn’t resist stopping and buying some. If you aren’t familiar with papusas, they are a Salvadoran dish which is like a hand made stuffed corn tortilla. I like that they keep their menu simple and just make pupusas… pork and chicken for meat eaters and beans, jalapenos, and spinach for vegetarians. They all contain cheese and come with a side of their curtido(cole slaw). I went with their spinach & cheese and their chicken & cheese. The spinach was my favorite which was stuffed with a nice amount of spinach and gooey cheese. The chicken was also really good with a nice amount of tender marinated chicken. Both were fresh and hot. The cabbage in their curtido was also nice, crunchy and paired well with the pupusa. And they are only $ 3 each! A good deal considering their size and freshness. The ladies making them are also really sweet. Unfortunately, they can only be found at Farmer’s Markets and street festivals, so buy some when you find them! They can be found at the following Farmers Markets… San Marcos(Weds), Chula Vista(Thurs), and City Heights(Sat).

I happened upon this place at the Rancho San Diego Farmer’s Market. I ordered the shredded pork and cheese papusa for $ 3.00. It came to me piping hot. More accurately very hot of the griddle so be careful biting into these delicious pockets of goodness.( ) The papusa was super. It had just the right amount of tender pork and melted cheese. The corn that surrounded the papusa was awesome. It went very well with their slaw and hot sauce they provided.( ) The people who run this place a re very friendly and helpful to those who are not familiar. If you are ever at a Farmer’s Market, and they are around, give them a try!

I had a Spinach & Cheese and a Jalapeño & Cheese pupusas this past Saturday at the Fiesta del Sol and I loved it. Very fresh, very good, $ 3 each, can’t beat that! According to the flyer I picked up, they are at 5 different farmers markets(Spring Valley, San Marcos, Chula Vista, North Park & City Heights) each week. I would definitely check them out when you see them around town!
