Perfect spot for watching the Padres games, great for Sunday football with 8 huge TV’s. The staff is great and they do fun stuff during the weekday nights. One of my spots down here.

Three and a half stars! Proper is a great place to visit during Padres home games. If you don’t feel like buying a ticket to Petco Park, head upstairs to Proper’s outside patio which overlooks the ballpark, park and the park and its jumbo screen. Go early to grab a table by the railing, which are also front row seats for the post-game fireworks show. Good food, great selection of beers and you also get to order pizzas from Wine Steals next door! However, in off-season the place is fairly empty(probably due to its location) and they also got rid of their late night happy hour.

FRIDAY $ 4YOUCALLITS!!! This review is for the friday night special in the downstairs bar specifically. I never knew they did this! $ 4 you call its, with a slight up charge($ 1) for straight ups — but its worth it for a glass of straight up liquor. Great deal. Nice atmosphere too. Not overly crowded — Our group of 5 was able to sit down easily(great for ladies in heels!!).

*This review is only for their bar service. After having a light lunch, a friend and I stopped here and went up stairs to the outside patio for a couple of drinks. I had a regular domestic beer and she ordered a Hefeweizen. My beer was $ 5 and hers I believe was $ 7. My beer was cold and fresh tasted like a weizen suppose to. What I really enjoyed about this place was the view from the patio and the excellent service. The view, which I specifically forgot to take a picture of it, was very nice. The ball park, surrounding condominiums, and the Park in the Park were all in view. It made it for a nice afternoon relaxing and sipping on a cold brew.( ) Our server was awesome. She was very friendly and personable. She spent time chatting with us and I learned she was a Steeler fan. I will not hold that against her… ha ha… Great place and I am definitely coming back to try their Sunday Brunch.

It was ok. Went during a Padres game. They had $ 4 miller lite. The Fish tacos were $ 7. The tacos were good. They had a mango salsa. They were more like mini tostadas. The taco shells were flat and crispy but whatever it is all the same. Maybe the fish and chips are amazing, I hope so for 14 bucks. I didn’t try them but I would like to. It has a cool location and the servers were very kind and attentive. Great service. other than that It didn’t really knock my socks off. It didn’t stand out in my mind. All the specials they advertised in the little flip book on the table said«not valid during padres home games» well ok then I’ll go somewhere else. Maybe they should have them during the home games. But what do I know.

A few friends and I came here before the ballgame recently, and while I’ve enjoyed it’s partnership with Wine Steals I never came to this gastropub. With a «Proper pound» in hand thanks to the gent outside the restaurant, we went up to the rooftop where I could see directly into the stadium. Not too shabby. The prices of the food/booze was decent considering the location and it wasn’t too crowded, either, despite being a game day. Our group ordered a tube of beer(not joking, a giant 60-oz tube) and happily split it between the five of us. The food was pretty yummy, but I didn’t eat too much of it since I was craving a Friar Frank once we got inside the stadium. What I did eat, though, was tasty, salty and perfect pre game food. Now let’s play ball!

I’ve been to the Gastro Pub twice and each was a different experience. First time, my husband and I ventured downtown to enjoy a pizza at Wine Steals only to find it had closed. After fighting for parking and walking, we decided to stay and eat at the Gastro Pub. The restaurant was closed, but were told we could eat bar-side. The food options weren’t great and were really pricey for what was offered. I chose to pass and my husband tried buffalo wings. You can’t really screw up buffalo wings, and he was satisfied. We didn’t intend to return. Then when we a 30th birthday overflowed from the Wine Steals roof-top into the Gastro Pub we decided to stay. We only had a drinks so there wasn’t much to review. The atmosphere was fun, loud just like any bar and accommodated the large crowds with really attentive bartenders — I was impressed. We still have no plans to go back, but if we are downtown and simply want to grab a drink, we might stop by.

I really like this place for its ambiance, location, and of course Happy Hour prices. During happy hour, it’s ½ off glasses of wine! I’m sure there are additional drink specials, but I focused on the wine when I went. Also, they have a few appetizers or small entrees to choose from that were pretty affordable and tasty as well. I’m just sad that they’re not open more days out of the week, but that’s really my only complaint. Love this gem!

Might not be the best place to go for a weekend lunch. Reading other reviews, it seems that most have a better experience here for happy hour, during games or pre-game. Not too many reviews for their off hours, so thought I’d put my 2 cents in. Came here to grab a bit to eat on a Saturday afternoon, around 2PM. Only the upstairs patio was seating. They do have heaters, but it was still breezy. They have an upstairs bar, but it looks like all the food is brought up from the kitchen downstairs, from the time we ordered, it took over 40 minutes to get our food, the waitress comped our second round of drinks. There were probably no more than 8 people dining, so either they must be short staffed in the kitchen or they just run a little slower during their off hours. Overall, food was decent, my husband ordered the open chicken sandwich which was probably the best item we got. The steak fries were good. I had the fish tacos, which came with 2 fillets and what seemed to be 5 large round flour chips/torillas? My cousin ordered the same thing and we didn’t know how to eat it. I think at one point the chips were soft tortillas, but by the time we got them they were crunchy so we couldn’t really fold them and ate them like chips. Flavor was good. I’ve been here for happy hour, so I think we were hoping for the same service. Probably wont be stopping by here again when it’s a slow day.

Is there a «Proper» way to do Proper Gastropub? Don’t worry, Proper doesn’t mean the restaurant has prim & prissy white linen table cloths and 3 kinds of forks on the table for you to get confused over – far from it! But here are some tips to enjoy this gastropub to the fullest: 1) Go during a Padre game. You get be a part of all the energy & excitement, and they have great game day discounts on food & drink. Julius & I were going to meet up with family to watch the game at Petco Park, but started pre-partying at Proper about a half an hour before the first pitch. We ended up staying at Proper for a couple of innings! 2) Make reservations. The best seats are on the rooftop patio with a semi-view of Petco Park(you do have great view of park’s Jumbotron & scoreboard!) It’s a good idea to ask for a table by the railing, otherwise, you might get seated at the back by the stairway. I called for reservations a few days in advance, and Proper was able to meet my request.(Maybe it was easy because the Padres aren’t doing so hot!) 3) Take advantage of the pitchers of beer. During game day, they are about $ 2 less. Julius ordered a pitcher of AleSmith Xtra Pale for himself(I got a glass too, to pretend I was going to have some LOL). So if you do the math, for only $ 15 he enjoyed high quality beer for less than $ 4 a pint(at Petco Park, beers are like $ 8 each!) It almost felt like I was«Extreme Couponing» — what a steal! 4) Order the Tortilla de Patata. As weird as the description sounds on the menu, this little appetizer showcasing potatoes & eggs is a winner. There are a lot of other eclectic items on the menu too, BUT if you’re not an adventurous eater or simply feel like a fish n’ chips to go with your beer, Proper’s version will blow you away. The fish is one HUGE lager battered cod — it looked like Bam Bam’s club from the Flintstones! As intimidating as it looked, it was light & delicious. Since the dish came with fries, instead of ordering the Curry Fries(something we were so curious about) we ordered a side of curry, which was pleasantly mild & sweet. Instant Indian food! 5) Tip well. Our waitress was super nice, and the staff at Proper is really friendly. I’m sure we would’ve stayed longer and try more food if we didn’t have to meet up with family. Well, at least **I** would’ve tried more food — after drinking a whole pitcher by himself, Julius at this point was beer-logged!

Stopped by here before a padre’s game for lunch and preparty. Decent amount of bottles with only a handful of draft. Beers were decently priced, but definitely cheaper than at the stadium. Got the open faced chicken sandwich and it was just OK. Kind of pricey for a little sandwich. It’s nice that winesteals is combined in the restaurant. Might be an OK place to come back for a few drinks but I’ll pass on the food.

Had there been a game, I’m sure the view would have been cool. The night we went was an away game day, so not really fair to judge I guess. The patio seemed small, quiet, and overall not that exciting. We had a big group meet up here after a recommendation, and to be honest I thought it was kinda meh. I ordered the same beer I normally get at the pub I frequent and it was significantly more expensive here(I guess you’re paying for the view?), and it just didn’t taste right. We also ordered an app to split which we never ended up getting. To give them credi, at least they took it off the bill. My friend ordered some food, it looked ok. The upstairs patio closed way early for a Friday night I thought, and the downstairs was too restauranty to want to kick it there with our group. We were under the impression that there was a late night happy hour every day because we thought we saw it on their website, but they didn’t offer it and after going home and checking we saw that it’s no longer there so maybe we misread. That was kind of disappointing, but I didn’t factor that into my rating because like I said, maybe we misunderstood. Overall, I can see how this place might be cool on a game day if you’re a Padres fan, but if you’re just looking for a cool place with a view, I’d rather risk being surrounded by dbags at Altitude than bother coming here again. And if it’s good beer you’re after, just go to the Bitter End. This place is just sort of lame :/

Difficult to find, its a wonder that anyone finds this place. There is no big sign or lights. If you miss the hostess standing next to a roll out sign, you’re gonna miss it. There is a bar downstairs and if you never knew about it you’d never know to go upstairs to the outside patio area. Its pretty cool as the patio overlooks the stadium. But getting there can be tricky, walking up the stairs gives you the feeling that you’re actually lost in some back area of the stadium. The wait staff is outstanding and they have a wireless system that allows you to run a tab and use it both upstairs and down. They have a pretty good drink list and its perfect for large groups, since they don’t charge a mandatory 18% gratuity for large parties, they were nice enough(even happy) to split the checks(rather each person run their own tab) I had the shepherds pie which was delicious! im used to ground meat, this was cubes of tender slow cooked lamb topped with mashed potatoes. mmm. i can see this place being very popular when the padres are playing at home esp the upstairs patio, im not sure how much of the field you can see but im sure you can hear the crowd and maybe the crack of the bat.

It was a Tuesday night. it was a taco Tuesday night. and I headed downtown. La Puerta was packed and there was a 50 minute wait. boo! S0oo we headed to Basic for some pizza… but there was a private event. boo! Über fail!.. decided to ask the security guy where to go and he suggested we go to Proper. Never heard of it. and it was a bit hard to find. Thank goodness for a sign. S0o. here we are at Proper. looks like an «English» pub. or what I think what an English pub would look like. It was a pretty cool place because the menu was affordable. I love the fact that there are small plates and bite size items because with that you can share and try all kinda of foods. We had ordered the«pork cheek lasagna» and was surprised how really good it was and it was quite fancy for what the setting it was in. Also! Their risotto cake was soo good! It had a fried egg on top and who doesn’t love a friend egg! Very cool place to grab a quick bite!

Proper takes risks; sometimes, these risks turn into a spectacular home run. S and I ordered the risotto cakes, mac and cheese, parpadelle pasta, and the Proper sausage. First, the fried risotto cakes. It consisted of three delicious tiers: crème fraiche on bottom, fried risotto cakes(just like it sounds) in the middle, fried egg on top. Delicious. The parpadelle pasta was cooked with great tomatoes(and I don’t even like tomatoes) and meyer lemon. It tasted too citrusy for me but I still liked it. Mac and cheese: whoooooaaaaaaa. It was so rich and creamy. I couldn’t pry S away from it. I suspect that she would have fought me for it. If you do anything in your life, order this dish. Proper, I present you with San Diego’s Best Mac And Cheese award. The unfortunate finale was the Proper sausage. The sausage had a really strange aftertaste. Each piece was wrapped in a flaky crust, which tasted good, but couldn’t salvage the unpleasant sausage.

I like this spot because it’s a perfect location if you’re heading over to Petco Park for a game. We didn’t go here to watch a game, but little did I know that they televise some of the away games on the jumbo screen at Park at the Park, very cool since we were able to catch the game from where we were seated at the upstairs patio. Anyway, we went here for dinner, but got here early enough to take advantage of the happy hour deals. I don’t know exactly what they were since I was the last of the group to arrive and I ate whatever they ordered. The food was okay, I wasn’t in love with it, so I ate little of it except for the calamari which was not bad. Yay for half off cocktails during happy hour, I loaded up on Stoli/cran before 7:00 rolled around, kept me nice and warm as we made our way to other bars the rest of the night. I’d go back because the location is awesome, if you can find parking at least. It also shares a door with Wine Steals(which I also like), so I’ll be returning for a few more outings with my friends.

I didn’t need another reason to love Proper Gastropub more than I already did, but after hosting a luncheon here recently for an organization of which I’m on the board, my love affair with Proper was sealed as a permanent deal. Thanks to Proper, my luncheon went off without a hitch, which I know is no easy feat when 25+ people are involved. The table was impeccably prepared on the outdoor patio and they had thought ahead to arrange for a microphone, for which I was very grateful as we ended up needing it. Lunch itself was more than I could have asked for: a beautifully prepared four-course meal, consisting of a salad, soup, entrée(choice of smoked chicken sandwich, grilled tuna sandwich, or grilled vegetable sandwich) and sorbet, for just $ 12 per person. Everyone enjoyed their lunch and I was impressed that the price was so right. Throughout the luncheon, we were treated with the utmost level of service, from the manager on duty to our servers to the good folks behind the bar. It’s clear that Proper cares dearly about the happiness of their customers, and as a very happy customer, I can say I will most definitely be back again and again.

Quite possibly the best burger I’ve ever had. The ketchup-like tomato is fantastic, not too thin but not too thick. Everything about it was awesome. I can’t even contain myself when writing about it, and have been thinking about it for three full days now. So good. The drink I had was also tasty, a tequila fizz, but it was nothing special really. I don’t know that I’d go back specifically for the drinks although I’ll probably get a bottle at Wine Steals next door(for the same $ 6 corkage) and enjoy my burger on the balcony during a baseball game. Now that sounds like a way to enjoy baseball.
