Fantastic German food. Great prices at happy hour on superb German Beers and small bites. They have an outside area– it’s not really a Biergarten, just a patio, but still nice — they even have outdoor heaters to take away the chill. The spatzle is some of the best I ever had, and you can never go wrong with a schnitzel or a sausage with a cold Paulaner to wash it down. I have had birthday dinners here and they do well accommodating large groups. They have their own small lot in back, but it fills up quickly, and street parking in the area can suck.

This is my first time eating here and it blew me away! The Schweinshaxe (which is literally an entire leg of a pig deep fried until the skin is crispy) was the best thing I’ve ever eaten. The beet salad is also excellent. Our server, Ulla, was hilarious. She provided excellent customer service while telling it to us straight (she tried to warn us that we were ordering way too much food– and she was right!) P. S. Order a bottle of the Grand Imperial champagne– Ulla’s fave!

OB… Great Happy Hour & Free Appetizers after 5:00. This place works for authentic German cuisine!

I’m giving this 3 stars so you read this. I actually am still in shock there should be a no star area for this review. My family has been going to Kaiserhofs for many years. It’s one of my parents favorite restaurants. My mother was German and had a soft spot for their meatloaf. She passed away a little over a year ago.
With this being said my Father who is 87 years old we decided to take him here for Fathers Day for more great memories. We got there at 5:00 so it wouldn’t get late for him, expecting to get home no later than 6:30.
We knew we were in trouble when our server couldn’t even take our drink orders. Then I had to ask him to let us order our appetizers then dinner. The restaurant was not even full when we ordered and of course by 6:00 it was hopping like usual. We got our appetizers and salads which was great but we kept looking for our waiter because we needed refills etc. clearly the service was the problem! So after waiting an hour and a half for our dinner to get to the table my Father and my husband and the rest of us noticed everyone except us had eaten and left!!! I finally went to the front desk to complain and ask where our food was mostly for my dad and a waiter came by and said that I needed to go with him and the owner will talk to me. I’m thinking great because I’d rather speak privately to him… instead the waiter took me to the kitchen and the owner started screaming and yelling at me like a crazy person saying that I can go to hell and that 2 people didn’t show up for work then says he’s ready to have a heart attack!!! Seriously I’ve never ever been sent back to a kitchen of a restaurant and get yelled at by the crazy owner spitting out flem all over the food and yelling sooooo loud that my nephew could hear him screaming from the bathroom at me!!! Seriously all I wanted to do was complain about the service because clearly it was our server tonight but after what this man did to me I went back to the table in total shock not knowing what to do because I didn’t want to upset my Dad on his day… especially because at his age this might his last so once he heard about what just happened he was very upset as to what the owner did and we decided to leave. As soon as we got up, the food was coming and by then I just wanted to get out of there! My sister then spoke to the hostess expressing the disappointment in what happened tonight and asked just for my dads order to be packed up so he could at least have his duck. The owner refused to allow him this on fathers Day!!! After everything that has happened I question why an owner of a restaurant would send a customer in the kitchen especially when I’m wearing sandals which is against code in California, then proceed to lose it uncontrollably in front of his employees screaming like a madman! This man needs to sell his restaurant and go live on a beach somewhere seriously!!! Born and raised in Point Loma I’ll be letting everyone I know what happened at Kaiserhof today… use your judgement but I still have visions of the owner cooking and spitting in the pan he was cooking in pretty disgusting!!! Eat at your own risk so so so sad because this used to be a special place

This review should really be more like 2.5 stars. Waitresses were friendly enough, food was tasty. Kaiserhof is a cute little place and portions are a good size, but I want to continue to explore some of my other options for German cuisine in SD before returning.
It seemed to be a bit overpriced and service sucked as far as the time it took for our food and drinks to be delivered to our table. We had our main courses delivered first and then had to wait 10 – 15 mins for all of the sides to come out. Main courses were getting cold, so we began eating and were halfway finished by the time our full meals were in front of us. Beers took forever to arrive too. It wasn’t especially busy in there either. You might want to give it a try though if you don’t mind the wait.

Food was amazing and Tanya was an awesome server! We celebrated both a birthday and an anniversary and she made it awesome! Everything was delicious, my mom had the wurstplatte which she loved! And I had burenwurst which was super duper delicious! Thank you! Request Tanya if you go!

Kaiserhof is relatively comparable to the food I tried when I visited Germany. They have a wide selection and I loved the ambiance. I recommend making a reservation ahead of time because the place is pretty small.

I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. We were promptly greeted and sat down at a great corner table in minutes. Came around 6:30, the table service was awesome. The servers wear uniforms as German maids and their accents are authentic. It made the whole experience even better. Now the food. I had been craving Schnitzel and it did NOT disappoint at all. Finished it all off with a humongous slice of German Chocolate cake which was equally amazing with its home made icing. Im definitely planning a trip back soon.

I been coming here for meany years now and it is a great place to come and drink beer .And the food is great I always have food left over to take home with me. Yep they know me there.

Service was absolutely terrible, food was decent but pretty expensive.
Sat down at 6pm, got our entrée at 730. Our waitress Ulla not only ignored us, but was extremely rude and aggressive. Table next to us was sat after is, and was able to place their order, finish their appetizer, and order several rounds of beer before we were even able to order our meal. She simply ignored us and when she would swing by she would throw table settings at us and kick chairs next to us. Wouldn’t let us say that we’re ready to order as she continuously stormed off. Had to ask several times for another waitress to get a beer for us and to get our waitress.
Everything else about this place was good, German beer selection, the beer garden, the brussel sprouts were really good.
Honestly the service was so bad it would be difficult for me to come back. However I did see another waitress doing well at the table next to us so maybe I’ll come back for happy hour instead of dinner and just sit at the bar to avoid Ulla.

Not very authentic. Out of two dishes that my husband wanted to try. The blue cheese and streusel was very good. Not a very good first impression and prices were too high for quality of dishes.

Love Kaiserhof food. The food was SO good and worth every moment of eating (and taking home), savory, authentic, etc.
The service was SO SLOW. It took thirty minutes to get water and longer to get drinks (hmmm? maybe they don’t have bussers, but they make money off of drinks and apps)?, it literally took one hour to get our apps (not exaggerating) and two hours on top or more to get our food, we had to physically go to the bar to get only our *second* wine/beer…we were just two couples, nothing major and *only* two other tables on the patio/​biergarten, not crowded per se, at all.
I actually have proof re: time on my phone, because we were trying to make light of the situation and just wanted have a good night out for a birthday and two couples.
The table next to us said the same thing, we all laughed, but at the end of the evening it was a $ 200+ tab, and we are good tippers, and the other table said the same thing, ironically arriving one hour after us, and they were only the third table on the patio).
I (really, nicely asked, and even randomly speak German and enjoy the culture, and getting out of the mainstream places) asked the waiter if he was extra busy, even though we were his only table on the patio at the time, and, the server’s response was «we aren’t in sections tonight and I now I am about to have four tables in the main room.»
We were a very laid-​back table, and laid-​back people and just wanted bevs and some good German food. It took SO long to even get two beers, my chard and my g/f’s red wine took over 25 min., and the server was flustered in the beginning and said «the shrimp cocktail takes a very long time,“so that was way over 40 min.
It was like excuseville and we just wanted to get out mid-​week and have drinks and spend money and relax in a German/​authentic environment as opposed to a fake environment…
The waiter gave us bread way AFTER the entrees were served, so that was definitely two hours after, and we asked. Maybe they don’t have bussers or hostesses who can deliver the bread? SO weird on a slow (or even not slow) night.
Our reservation was 7pm on a Wed. for four people, and when we arrived it was empty. Ummm, that is super-​early on a mid-​week evening, just saying/​observing.
BUT, will go there for food or bar a million times over (or better yet do take-​out b/​c food=good, service=not so much) because the food is wonderful. Just know it might take hours if you dine in, waiter service sucks.
There was no obvious or apparent manager, and whatever, the waiter had zero personality and was frantic and sweating and it was EARLY, before anyone arrived,
I guess all I can say is «whatever & loved the food after 5,000 hours,» soo, advice: call it in or sit at the bar!

Today was my 1^st time coming here and I gotta say it was AWESUM! The only reason I give this place 4 star out of 5 is for the seriously high prices. Standard German recipes such as a simple Schnitzel can run you $ 27. So be prepared for a $ 100 bill if you come here hungry. The portion sizes are equivalent to dining… really small, but the food is extremely tasty and rich. Beer prices are astronomical at $ 8.75 for 0.5 L! That’s just a regular glass of beer folks. Happy hour prices are somewhat more reasonable @ $ 14 a pitcher. The place is very small but instantly transports you into an Alpine home once you step inside. The staff is very friendly and the Deutsche Volkmusik (folk songs) is light and fun. There is a full bar and two dining areas. The Biergarten is outside and is very comfortable and also comes with it’s own bar. Happy Hour appetizer snacks are free, plentiful, and Deeelish! The bar and beer garden open at 4, but the restaurant opens at 5. We got the beer battered onion rings to start. OMG they were fantastic! Light, crispy with every bite, and so hot you could barely pick them up. The German pretzel was house made and very good; eat it hot for best flavor. We got the smoked sausage plate with potato pancakes and cucumber salad. INcredile! The cucumber salad is actually just pickled cucumbers only but ever so tasty. The smoked sausage was insanely flavorful, but way too salty. The potato pancakes were perfection itself. Altogether we ordered 2 Happy Hour pitchers of beer, onion rings, 1 pretzel, and two individual sausage plates and our total came to $ 81! Ouch! The atmosphere or Gemütlichkeit was perfect and our waiter Scott was sooo friendly and attentive. I recommend trying it, but DON’T go there hungry!

we thoroughly enjoyed our first experience not only at Kaiserhof, but having German food altogether. I have had this place bookmarked for months and today we finally headed over to try it. luckily, they were opened for lunch, but be aware that they only serve lunch Friday-​Sunday. we walked in and were immediately overtaken by the culture that was everywhere. it was as if we stepped directly into a traditional restaurant in Germany. we were seated immediately by a server who was very short & informative but not necessarily friendly. she suggested the jäger schnitzel and spätzle since we said we wanted to try authentic German food. her suggestions were amazing! we also tried the Reuben sandwich which was one of the best I had ever had. we ordered it with the German potato salad which was also suggested by our server. it was a bit vinegary but creamy and flavorful. I really liked the spätzle especially in the mushroom sauce that came with our jäger schnitzel. even the rolls were delicious!
overall, we felt cozy and comfortable while we enjoyed a delicious, hearty, and comforting German meal and we look forward to coming back & trying more.

Very authentic feel. Awesome beer selection, with German and Austrian beers on tap. Great menu with classical German cuisine to choose from. Service was very professional and timely. I had the oxtail soup to start with and it was very delicious and reminiscent of something my grandmother would have made for me. I had the Wiener schnitzel for my entrée, with sauerkraut and cabbage. It was perfectly prepared and delicious.
The only criticism I can offer is that the menu is highly priced and does not offer much to someone on a cheaper budget. It was sad to see the restaurant so empty. It was beautifully decorated and has a lot to offer. I would suggest having a bier garten menu, which offers smaller portions for a cheaper price. This way you can satisfy a more diverse clientele. I would still recommend this to a friend.

When a restaurant is as invested in a culture (German) as Kaiserhof, it’s always a little difficult to accurately represent and critique the experience.
My friend and his wife were looking forward to sharing the Schweinshaxe ($ 28.95), a crisply roasted pig knuckle!
Parking in this part of OB can be iffy, but we found a couple spots to choose from in the lot behind the restaurant, which is excellent!
No reservations, we had intended to sit at the bar, and scored the seats we wanted. Somebody left their ipad on a seat and we handed it to the bartender.
Started off properly with a shot of some sort of herbal liquor ($ 7.90), wasn’t paying attention and didn’t get the name.
I decided on the venison medallions ($ 33.95). You have a choice of salad here, mixed greens or cucumber (house) salad, which was my selection. Thinly sliced cucumbers, minced onion in a vinegar brine with dill. Very refreshing!
With dinner, had a glass of their Pinot Blanc ($ 8.50), very crisp and refreshing. The medallions came with a peppercorn cream sauce with musrooms, a pear and choice of two sides. Mine were German potato salad and red cabbage. The sides were perfect. The chef chose to serve the venison bloody red, and although I ate it all, did consider sending it back. Game meat should be served «medium» and above, otherwise, it’s a bit chewy as it was in this case.
We finished with a shared Black Forest Cake.
Here’s the breakdown:
Ambiance/​Cleanliness-​3 stars. It’s a dark, vaguely kitschy restaurant/​bar.
Service-​Mary was professional, helpful and on point-​4 stars.
Food-​I was a bit disappointed, especially considering the cost of my venison special. There were two loin medallions, maybe ½”+ thick and maybe 3 ½″ around-​Low 3 stars.

If you’ve ever lived in or visited Germany, you can expect some very excellent authentic German cuisine at the Kaiserhof.
The menu is laid out exactly as it would be in Germany with many small but distinguishing details present.
There are also other options if you’re not a big meat and potatoes fan.
It’s disappointing to see the Kaiserhof at a rating of only 3.5 stars, for an American German restaurant it’s closer to a 5.
If you’re disappointed and are feeling a low rating coming on, you may want to check yourself. It’s only fair to compare the food to German restaurants rather than your personal comfort zone. They’re a hearty people and not so into the veganistic gluten averse trendy SoCal zeitgeist.

Authentic German food says a Frau of a Deutsch man. Not a German food is sausage as can be seen from the traditional menu of schnitzels, sauerbraten, broiled trout and rouladen. Spatzel, rotkohl, gherkin salad, knodel, and sauerkraut. The cucumber salad is traditional but I prefer the green salad with their homemade chunky bleu cheese dressing. The broitchen are crispy and taste just like one I purchased at the baker while in Dusseldorf in September. Don’t miss this superb dining experience. You will feel as if you are seated in a quaint German countryside home. Great selection of regional beers and wines.

Die Deutsche Beir smeckt die beste! This little jewel is incredible! Coming from a German household I seek out German restaurants since they aren’t common! I highly recommend this place!

This was an AWESOME enjoyable time at Kaiserhoff! Originally we went to celebrate, what would have been my German Father, Ray’s, 81^st Birthday, rest his beautiful soul! With me, I had my Mom, Wanda, my Hubby, Tim, and my 95 year old German Father-​in-​law, Frank Sr. This restaurant was very busy and stayed that way the entire evening. Due to that it was a bit noisy. However, that did not stop us from enjoying our celebration of my Daddy! The food was delectable! I have never had such Yummies! The Chicken, the bread, the applesauce saurkraut, the lima been bowl, and the dessert were all perfectly made! The hostess was great! The waitress, Ulla, was so ABSOLUTELY German and so ABSOLUTELY Incredible, that it definitely completed our Fantastic German Night Experience! Thank you Kaiserhoff! This was our first visit there and it will certainly not be our last!

Ordered the baked Camembert cheese (not melted with a funky crust), wurst sampler (a superb selection of hot dogs and breakfast sausage served with toothpicks. $ 13 for Jimmy Deans — yes!), and pork paprika schnitzel (meat had no flavor, sauce was flat and runny) with cucumber salad (meh), spatzel (greasy, flavorless noodle), and potato pancake (greasy, cold, and limp). Generous portions but it was all bland, not good, and expensive (all of the above was $ 58 (no drinks)). Our server was pretty authentic (German), but not friendly in the least bit. She rushed things, unapologetically got in the way, and had an abrasive manner. Kafe Sobaka (Golden Hill) and Pomegranate (North Park) are better options if you’re looking for a similar type of fare.

Placed our Order at 5:45PM .did not get it until 6:50PM. No apologies were given. Food was good but the wait ruined the experience.

This is a great German restaurant. While I haven’t been in Germany for over 10 years, I used to eat regularly at German restaurants in Chicago. The food here was very good. The beer selection was wonderful. The staff was attentive and friendly, despite their ridiculous getup (themed!) and the full house due to Oktoberfest celebrations. Will definitely be back when my wallet recovers.

I know that I may be easier to please than others, but I loved this restaurant. It was a fun place with a warm atmosphere and the pig roasting on the spit was a nice touch. As for the food, I really enjoyed it. It was hearty, filling, German food that hit the spot so well, I didn’t have room for dessert. I was convinced to try some red cabbage, which is something I have never done before and, thanks to Kaiserhof, I believe I can add it to my list of food favorites. Kaiserhof is relatively expensive, but I had a great date night with my boyfriend in which we both had a delicious meal and an entertaining waiter, Michael, so it was worth it!

My husband spent 5 years in Germany so we come to Kaiserhof for a bit of nostalgia and a lot of really amazing beer. The food is super authentic. Lots of yummy wursts that are served up without all the frills. It’s pretty expensive in the dining room but it’s cheap in the bar, and that’s where we spend most of our time.
First off, Kaiserhof has the best selection of German beer you’ll find anywhere in San Diego, hands down. But they also carry some very interesting European liquors as well. We always stare at the bottles behind the bar and discover new brands we’ve never heard of before. And, during happy hour, there are free, unlimited bar snacks like wings and veggies included with your purchase of a beer. Nice!
We like chatting with the staff and the regulars when we stop in. The staff is very friendly and knowledgable and most of them are German or know quite a bit about Germany so my husband has a great time conversing and reminiscing. We love this place and know we’ll be back!

Had a great time at the Kaiserhof. I loved the slightly kitschy atmosphere and the old-​school outfits worn by the waitstaff. Food was very good. I loved the schwietzke, a massive pork shank roasted to perfection with a nice crispy skin. The schnitzels were very good, and I loved the potato pancakes and red cabbage. Prices were slightly high, but the service was very good. Smoking is allowed on the patio; sit inside if that scares you.

I’d probably give 4.5 stars if I could, but German restaurants are so rare and special these days, that I’d rather give 5 than 4. My girlfriend and I had dinner here today (a Tuesday), around 6:00p. Parking was easy in their lot (often a big gripe of mine in SD), and the place was not crowded at all. Filled up while we were eating. Décor and the feel of the space is perfect (we ate inside; haven’t seen the biergarten).
We had the wurst sampler, a pretzel, sauerbraten, kaeseschnitzel, spaetzle, bread dumplings, and sauerkraut. For dessert, the apple strudel and a pear cupe. All the food was excellent, and my only complaint is that the sauerbraten was a tad dry. With the gravy, though, it didn’t matter.
Was VERY happy to escape the tyranny of the over-​hopped monstrosities that pass for beer in this town.

It was a gloomy day, so we opted for sitting inside rather than outside in the beer garden. I wasn’t expecting the white tablecloths but loved the cozy interior with the paintings of German landscapes on the walls.
Within a few minutes, a woman and her younger relative sat at the table across the room. She had apparently been to Kaiserhof on Friday for dinner and was back again only two days later. She also knew the man sitting at a table in the corner, who was also there on Friday. Good signs that people love the food enough to come back twice in one weekend.
I ordered the Beef Stroganoff which came with soup or salad and two sides. I went with the split pea soup, a potato pancake and wide egg noddles. My husband ordered the Bratwurst, also with split pea soup, a potato pancake, and a German lager to wash it all down.
I enjoyed the entire meal but the split pea soup was the highlight, it was delicious and I’d order another bowl in a heartbeat. The portions were quite large, especially for lunch but great for leftovers.
The main reason for the 4 stars instead of 5 was the price. For the two of us, our bill came to $ 60 and since the service was indeed great, we opted for a full 20% tip, which brought our total to $ 72. Whew, that’s a lot of money for lunch.
I wouldn’t say it’s our favorite restaurant in town but we’ll be back at some point when one of us has a craving for some German food and/​or beer.

Came here for the first time last week with a group of coworkers. This place is tucked away but it is pretty good. We sat at the outdoor patio area. During happy hour they have a mini buffet that is tucked away inside. I haven’t come here for a sit downfall but would love to give it a try.
I did try a few of their beers and I would say the double Bosch was great. They do have giant (and I mean giant) pretzels that are good and their potato pancakes were also yummy. Our server Ulla was spot on and had a good sense of humor. She was a blast.
I look forward to coming back.

I love this place for happy hour. There are lots of specials and selections on beer and a little happy hour snack buffet. I will admit that sometimes I’m not sure what is in the buffet trays, but I eat it anyway and it’s always good. While my boyfriend and his buddies love the beer selection, I usually opt for the house cab. It’s a pretty good pour for a low price.
The buffet usually includes, meatballs, ribs, wings, veggies and dip. I think there has been 1 time where we had a shrimp or fish option. We are always happy about the selection because, well, it’s free snacks. We also usually order more for the table to share, like onion rings, fries, mozzarella sticks or a pretzel.
All of the staff is really friendly and always act like they recognize you, even when you may have never met them before. They don’t mind if you stay awhile and always do a final check on you before happy hour ends.

Came here with a bunch of friends, for drinks and dinner. I always like their large selection of Germain beers on tap, the pilsners and laggers are always so fresh and clean tasting and i also like their Heffs too. But this time something different caught my eye; Berliner Weisse, a german beer with raspberry syrup. i gave it a shot because I’ve never heard of it or seen it offered anywhere else before. It was delicious! Not sweet like a mixed drink, but a subtle sweetness and raspberry flavor. Kinda dangerous because i think i could drink a bunch of these all night!
We shared a few appetizers, The crab cakes were very good, it came in some kind of tasty gravy! Mmm never had crab cakes with gravy but it really worked. The Wurst sampler was okay, good but not extraordinary.
No trip to Kaiserhof would be complete without ordering the Schweinshaxe, roasted pork shank. Delicious crispy roasted pork skin on the outside and super tender pork underneath. The best of both worlds! It comes with a choice of soup or salad, and 2 sides and gravy for the pork.
Last time i wasn’t too impressed with many of the sides (potato pancake, red potatoes, and dumpling) because they were pretty plain, but i guess thats how they are. So this time i got french fries and the vegetable of the day which happened to be carrots. The fries were very good, it reminded me of McDonalds fries (which i mean as a compliment) very crispy and tasty, i dipped them in the gravy from my Schweinshaxe which made them even better! The sliced carrots were tender but not mushy and cooked in butter. Mmm butter makes everything better. The cream of asparagus soup was out of this world!
My German friend got the Jäger Schnitzel, breaded veal cutlet with mushroom gravy! Man it looked so good. As much as i love the Schweinshaxe, I think i’ll be getting that next time.
We all left so stuffed, German food is very heavy and filling, its not something I’d eat on a weekly basis, but just when you want to treat yourself to some tasty hearty food.
Service was great but i think the server was a little overwhelmed at times but he did a good job checking up on us and getting us more beer and water refills.
There is a small parking lot behind the restaurant and also 2 more stalls in the ally behind the next door liquor store. They also have a happy hour which you get free appetizers!

My husband and I have been coming here for many years and have never been disappointed with the food. It’s very close to his mom’s home cooking and equals what we’ve had in Munich and throughout Bavaria.
Kaiserhof is on a busy little corner on Sunset Cliffs Boulevard. They have their own parking lot which tends to get full but we’ve been told we can park across the street after 6pm at a neighboring lot. Good to know!
The restaurant has a cottage feel to it with separate dining areas and a great biergarten! From the wooden floors to the walls filled with German landscapes and regional crests to the smell of wonderful sauces and grilled meats, this is our Go-​To place for great German food, desserts, and beer!
If you get a chance to attend their Happy Hours, they have the BEST FREE APPETIZERS … yes, FREE! On any given day, they will serve up fried chicken wings, meatballs, cut-​up fried potato pancakes, French fries, wedge fries, house fries, fried zucchini, all with sides of fresh veggies and ranch dressing. You can tell that the chefs really enjoy what they’re cooking! Oh, and did I mention, they are FREE!
As for the biergarten menu, the onion rings are the best we’ve had anywhere! Yes, I said anywhere and I mean it. Some of those onion rings are big enough to wear as a tasty bracelet (no, I did not try to wear them but I totally could have!). The Bauernwurst on a roll along with a Franziskaner Hefe Weizen are my bar faves whereas my husband has tried just about every beer they serve there and has been happy with his choices. … Rouladen, a stuffed rolled beef filled with onion, carrots, and bacon. It’s drenched in a rich, savory brown gravy and his sides are typically the bread dumpling (it’s the size of a baseball!) also covered in gravy and the red cabbage. As for me, I’ve enjoyed so many of their dishes: the Cobb Salad (yeah, I was dieting then); Schnitzel Holstein; Jäger Schnitzel; Schweinshaxe (think Fred Flintstone on this one and, yes, it’s delicious!); Zigeuner Schnitzel; Kasehahnchen; Poached Salmon Filet; Rostbraten; Zigeunerwurst; Beef Goulash Kaiserhof; and, of course, Sauerbraten, Bavarian Style. All these meals come with soup or salad, two side dishes, and a basket of bread and butter.
As for the desserts, just try them all! You can never go wrong with their fresh-​baked Apple Strudel or the Crème Brulee. Of course, the cakes are always a good choice. One of my favorites is the poached pear with chocolate liqueur and a side of vanilla ice cream. Yum!
The meals are hearty and are huge portions. You will more than likely leave with leftovers but that just makes for a great meal the next day, right? Just keep in mind that this is not the place to come to if you’re dieting. Take it from me, you’ll be miserable. Just eat sensibly the next day so you can eat when you’re here!
Oh, and by the way, our favorite server is Scott … he’s always taken great care of us, whether it was just us two or just us twelve, he always treats us like family! Give Kaiserhof a try … I think you’ll like it!

Absolutely the best German food.
Extremely friendly staff. Even when it’s busy they work hard! All the food comes out warm!
Today they had a pork chop special and it was cooked to perfection! Just melted in out mouths! Always come for the wierner schnitzel!
Parking is a bit difficult but the walk is nice and again the food is worth it!!!
I was talking to my boyfriend for 2 years about this place and now he’s hooked!

So check this out. My bf is a 6’3 280 lb Mexican man bear from the great state of Texas who fluently speaks german instead of Spanish. I’m Mexican and a quarter german (shout out to my grandma who trapped my grandpa just for papers) Anyways, my guy is all about anything German and we have been trying to eat at Kaiserhof for a while now but they have funky business hours. We finally got a chance to be in the OB area while it was open.
Three things I learned on my visit here.
–meatloaf is German?
–Kaiserhof has a fancier atmosphere on the inside than anticipated (they weren’t ready for my transparent Nike pro shorts and flip flops)
–German beer is Gut.
First thing I noticed are the women employed here do wear the traditional dirndls (Google it) and I quite possibly was underdressed for dinner because it was «fine dining» inside, but YOLO sooo. We were seated and realized we were the only customers in the room born after 1955.
If I wouldn’t have had my bf there I really would have had no idea what was going on or what to order based on what I like. Words like «wiener schnitzel» threw me off and in my head I was wondering if I was gonna order a chili hot dog. He cleared a lot up for me. There was a easter menu offered for the upcoming holiday and I saw meatloaf and I was immediately sold and surprised that was offered. meatloaf plate came with a choice of soup or salad, and two sides. I chose mashed potatoes and because every other choice were potatoes as well I went with «vegetable of the day» which unknowingly ended up being deep fried zucchini. The meatloaf was outstanding, very soft and moist served with gravy and mushrooms. All for $ 18.
We also ordered a Kaiserhoff Kölsch and it was pretty good, I’m not really into beer but it was light and smooth. As well as a small pretzels that is made in house wasn’t as good as everyone reviewed.
Bf ordered a wurst platte. Which was two sausages over a bed of sauerkraut and potatoes which is a traditional German meal for $ 22.
Portions were more than generous, service was average, most plates don’t go below $ 17. There is plenty of parking behind the building. Fun for a unique date night and those looking to try something new and authentic.

Echt gut Deutsche Essen. Es fühlt wie man wieder in Deutschland ist. Viele Bieren zum wählen. Man kann im Biergarten rauchen, genau wie Europa. Das Kaffee ist auch lecker. Ich werde unbedingt zurück kommen!

The best meatloaf ever!
I’ve been coming to Kaiserhof for ten years plus and have spent many birthdays and special occasions here because I just love the food and atmosphere. My honey and I actually got engaged here. I always get the same thing; either meatloaf or the stuffed cabbage (which is stuffed with the meatloaf), spatzle and red braised cabbage with a Spatan beer. The meatloaf is absolutely better then any I have ever had (sorry grandma) and the gravy mixed with the spatzle and cabbage, I crave. I know Unilocalers have remarked on the service but we sat at the bar on the patio and didn’t have an issue.

I had dinner with one of my girls here. She arrived before me, so I came in to find her at the bar, beer in hand and 50+ year old guys around her. Needless to say, the bar is like Cheers with its regulars and if you’re a cute girl like my friend, be prepared to have the regulars swarm you. But they were really nice and gave recommendations on what to order We had a great convo with Ed, a German regular there as well as our bartender Bill. I saw free bar food like meatballs and pretzels, but I tend to stray away from pretzels or nuts in a free for all community bowl. Ever see the movie Along Came Polly? haha
* Homemade «Large bratwurst» and I can def. say it’s LARGE! I love how it wasn’t all fatty like store bought brats. It came with two choices of sides, I ordered the saurkraut and spatzle, a german egg noodle, and soup or salad, I had their special-​oxtail soup. All yum! It also came with this spicy mustard that was amazing and I don’t usually like mustard.
* My friend ordered the Kasenhahnchen. Breaded chicken with a cheese and paprika sauce. Cucumber salad and cauliflower with muenster cheese for her sides. All yum as well!
The place is pretty homey, especially with the xmas decorations. Prices seemed a bit high to me, but at the same time I guess reasonable for the only German restaurant in SD. I have no idea if it’s authentic, but I’m a fan of German food now and I will be back!
