I’m not a huge fan of Mexican food, but this Jalepenos surpassed all of my expectations! Be prepared to wait in line for a little while — the line was almost out the door when I arrived but it moves quickly. There might be a 20 – 25 minute wait for your food though, as lots of people take out. I ordered 2 types of tacos — beef and carne asada and a side of beans. The Carne Asada was cooked to perfection — it was tender, juicy and overflowing. I almost didnt have room for anything else afterwards! My husband ordered a california burrito and shrimp tacos, both which he was impressed with. There is a salsa bar on the side so you fill up as much as you want. Have a Corona while you wait! Will be back soon.

I’m really sad to say this. This has been my fav place to eat for years However the last 3 visits were awful. The food was bad, tortilla over cooked, beans super dry, salsa bar empty, seems like the guy at the front just wants to chat with his girlfriend on the phone. The meat has always been super good but the last few times it’s been super fatty and or way over cooked into hard inedible chunks. Also the size of the size of the burritos have shrunk so much. They used to be pretty big. The last burrito I got was the size of a Taco Bell bean burrito No happy ;( After the 3rd time of «maybe it’s just a off night» I’m thinking this is the new them. Really sucks I hope the owner reads these and improves.

Prices seem to be on the rise here. It’s a solid taco shop, but $ 7 for a take out chix burrito, with no chips? Not sure I’m diggin this place as much as I have in years past.

I enjoyed a good breakfast burrito from this place. I had them make me the ham, egg, and cheese, but instead if beans, I asked them to put some pico de gallo for $ 5.25. The burrito was average size and a little on the skinny side. The eggs were good, but were a little over down and had some browning, but tasted pretty good. The ham was very good, savory, tender, and a little salty just the way I like it. The pico de gallo was fresh and quite tasty. I would of liked some more freshly chopped serrano or jalapeño peppers in the pico. The mixture of shredded yellow and white cheese was not entirely melted, but that was okay because the cheese was good. I tried their red and green salsa from the salsa bar and both were good. The red had a little more flavor and heat, so I focused on that one with my burrito. The flour tortillas was good in that it tasted good, however it did not have that moist butter texture that I find on many other taco shops. They guys running the shop early Saturday morning were in good spirits and friendly enough. They do offer complimentary tortilla chips which were good eating with salsa from the salsa bar.

Hmmmmm… So ive been to Jalapenos way back in the day. The burritos were actually still pretty decent. until now… My brother introduced me to what is called«a la Diabla» style. from my understanding, its a marinate they cook the meat in. You can actually get this sauce cooked over different types of meat, or even get a side of it. I must say. this took the carne asada burrito to a different level. I could honestly say that after trying their Cali-Burrito A la diabla style with sour cream, this is now my favorite. With many taco shops at every corner. this one is now my «Go-To». until i find another spot. which will be probably never. Thanks jalapenos. you will see me more often. YUM!

My hat goes off to fellow Unilocaler, Rod S. for reintroducing me to this spot. All I have to say is a la diabla! Rod S. recommended I get a Carne Asada Burrito a la diabla style. I was like, wtf is that?! Let me tell you… BOOM! So good! It’s a special kind of sauce they use to cook the carne with. They say it’s spicy, but it’s not that spicy at all. It has a lot of flavor though! I think I have come back to Jalapenos 7 separate occasions since then. It’s that good! Honestly it has ruined all other taco shops I’ve been going too. Seriously, that good. My previous review, I think I gave like 2 – 3 stars. They have greatly improved since then. You even get free chips if you dine in. I’ve been getting the California Burrito diabla with sour cream. Hands down, one of the best burritos I’ve eaten in my life! This is my go to burrito spot until further notice. Damnnnnn so good…

It saddens me to write a negative review regarding Mexican food, but there was really nothing special about Jalapenos. I’ve had my share of good Mexican eats, and this was entirely subpar, if not worse. I ordered beef rolled tacos, which came out fairly quickly. However, they tasted dry and old. The guacamole on top was so thinly spread that it was a joke. It’s pretty standard for guacamole to be packed on, especially when you’re paying extra for it. My friend ordered a California burrito and he said it was just alright. More specifically, he wished there was more food inside of it. Lol. Service was a bit pushy, but understandable because it was a busier night. A redeeming quality was the free chips, although they were a little stale. The salsa was also pretty good, but I expect that from ANY Mexican joint. I don’t think I’ll be back.

Can someone please tell me why I waited SOOOLONG to write a review? The eff?!! Believe the hype and what everyone says about this place. Hands down one of the BEST Mexican spots in SD. If I had visitors from out of town asking for the best mexican food, I would take them here. OMG and their salsas are theeee best. I don’t know what they put in the green sauce but it’s crack! I really like the basic carne asada burrito with only guac, cheese and sour cream. Those are a must haves in my burrito. I also tried their carnitas burrito, also bomb. You really can’t go wrong with anything here. It’s all amazing.

Maybe it was an off night. My expectations were pretty high based on the other reviews I read. I ordered the beef rolled tacos and an el pastor taco. Both were good, but just ok. Actually a bit bland so I drenched both in the green salsa which was very good. Service was great but I wasn’t motivated to put this on my San Diego must have list the next time I’m in the area.

This place has a bunch of 5 star reviews? Seriously? Some of you North County folks need to head a little further south to see what a real taqueria is all about. I mean, it’s ok… but 4 – 5 star reviews? You peeps are really generous with your ratings. I ordered the carne asada fries(if you’ve read my other reviews this is always my litmus test for any taqueria) and paid $ 8.50 or so. The portion was decent but definitely not worth $ 8.50. But I guess that’s what they gotta do to pay rent in Carmel Mountain. The carne asada was just ok. Flavor was a little weak almost as though it wasn’t marinated in anything. And the guacamole and sour cream were placed in big, separate globs on top of the whole thing. Not only does this not look appetizing, you have to spread them around to even it out. Otherwise you get a mouthful of guac or sour cream or neither. The salsas they have are also not very good, in my opinion. Especially their salsa verde. It had a strong vinegar flavor to it. Not diggin’ it at all. No wonder why there was so much left. They were packed the afternoon I went, so people obviously like it here. But I won’t come back unless I absolutely have to. There are better options not too far away.

Super authentic food with an awesome salsa bar. I can’t say much since I only had the burrito with heaping spoonfuls of guac and meat(lean meat). Jalapenos is conveniently located across the street from a huge shopping center, so it’s the perfect spot to eat before or after a day of shopping. Small location, so plan on eating outside, waiting for a seat, or taking it to go. NOTE: They charge you a CC fee if you don’t use cash up $ 10

Tried their carne asada fries here and they were pretty good. Started to notice the places that serve sour cream and guacamole in the carne asada fries tend to taste much better. Although there were no salsa in the carne asada fries, I was able to at least go to their salsa bar to quickly address this problem. The fries were not oily and fried very well but the meal cooled down relatively quickly due to the presence of the sour cream and myself flooding the meal with salsa so if you want to avoid this problem you eat faster or put less of those items. We also got free chips. Overall it was a pleasant experience and I’ll come here again.

Food wasn’t amazing, but definitely loved the service. Both men at the register kindly answered my question about what was in their quesadillas and briefly gave me descriptive ingredients and condiments that were in it. They are very polite and friendly here. They always respond with greetings and thank yous which you dont get very so often at most mexican restaurants. And on our way out, one of them was coming in and decided to wait for us to walk out before walking in and thanking us again. It’s a nice environment in a nice neighborhood. I was sad that the quesadillas don’t come with sour cream and guacamole already included and that it was an extra charge. But at least they gave a good portion size of each sauce in large plastic sauce cup containers. I bought the shredded beef quesadilla, first time getting beef, usually I get carne asada. But I was fascinated when they told me that they use a bell pepper sauce that I wanted to try. The quesadilla itself was slightly soggy and everytime I bit into it, a lot of liquid came out the other end which I really didn’t like. And they just give you a small portion of shredded lettuce and pieces of tomatoes on the side. I would probably still come back here to try other menu items, but definitely not going to be one of my favorite places. But who knows, maybe I just need to order the right thing.

Awesome food, excellent service. I used to work at the Circuit City across the street and ate here everyday. I relocated to Phoenix in 2004, and have asked them to open up shop over there. Hopefully the owner is reading this. Every time I visit San Diego, this is a must stop! To all the nay sayers, don’t know what is wrong with their taste buds.

I love this place. I used to work right next door so it became a routine to embark on the orgasmic journey that is Jalapenos at least once a week. I usually get something with carne asada as I think that’s the best item on the menu. The carne asada burrito is a gargantuan concoction of beef and guac rolled up into a tortilla that’s longer than the Mississippi. The carne asada fries are big enough to feed two people. Be sure to have access to a toilet later cause that stuff can go straight through ya. But my favorite menu item is the carne asada plate. Why order a burrito when you can just make your own? It features a generous portion of carne asada along with rice, beans, guac, onions, lettuce, and a hot-off-the-griddle tortilla. Put some hot sauce in there and what you got is some holy guacamole. It does get crowded at the usual meal times so you may have to wait but it’s always been worth it. Best Mexican food I’ve had in a long time!

My boyfriend and I were wanting something quick for lunch so we decided to give Jalapenos a try as they have good reviews. The food was good, but we were not overly impressed. I ordered a plain ol’ bean and cheese burrito and he got the chicken enchiladas with rice and beans. My food was good, it would be difficult to screw up a bean and cheese burrito! He said his enchiladas were decent. For some reason, taco shop enchiladas are usually pretty bad, but he was not in the mood for anything else so he was happy they were edible. With a meal comes a small bowl of chips. Because I did not order a meal, we had to share, but that was fine. The salsa was pretty good. It’s a bit spicy, which I like, but my boyfriend thought it was a little too much. We found it strange that they charge for chips on to-go orders, even if a meal is ordered. It’s not like they receive more money for dine-in customers. We did not understand that at all. It’s definitely pricey. We paid about $ 13, and that is without any drinks. I heard the women who came in behind us tell her husband that they mind as well have gone to an actual restaurant.

I’ve been going here for shrimp burritos since I was a freshman in high school working across the street from this burrito shop when pink berry was in business! This restaurant is very clean! A clean and organized restaurant is everything to me! The food is pretty good. They have a variety of options from combination plates to tostadas, tacos, burritos, breakfast menu, nachos, soups menudo, quesadillas, enchiladas, tortas and a lot more. The food does take awhile, but I’ve been to other Mexican food shops(cotixan for example) and quick food = quality of it is not as good. Just a food for thought. My husband ordered the carne asada burrito and I ordered the shrimp burrito. I’m not a huge fan of beef like he is, I much rather prefer seafood. Both burritos were delicious and the carne asada burrito meat was juicy and full of flavor while the shrimp burrito was also delicious(: Customer service is great, they’re very nice and friendly and very welcoming. This is definitely one of my favorite places to get a burrito(:

Out of so many choices for Mexican places in the area, this place is above average. The place is clean and fast, and the guys are friendly. The California burrito and the rolled tacos are both really good. Pico de gallo is also really tasty. The place is kinda nickel and dimey however, charging for drink refills, chips to go, and limiting salsa. Understandable for a family run business, but can also seem frustrating as a paying customer. Overall good Mexican food, I look forward to going back and trying more things.

Yay free chips and good salsa! Yay good, clean mexican food! Yay nice service. Fish taco: great Al pastor burrito: flavor was great, but wasnt warm enough =(wanted to pop it into a microwave for a bit Friend ordered the side of guac which was HUGE! and also very good. The wait for lunch was long-ish though and if you want to eat there you might have to hawk a table during peak times.
