Not bad! Service: I went in the morning so the service was quick. The servers were all REALLY kind.(5⁄5) Food: Also. Not bad. I’ve had a lot of dim sum, and this spot tastes about the same as others. All of the food seemed freshly made and definitely hit the spot.(5⁄5) Environment: Beautiful restaurant. Looks very glossy and dark.(5⁄5)

One of the top dim sum spots in SD — can get pretty busy on the weekends and sometimes it takes a bit for the dishes to come out, but overall solid selection of dim sum items which are all pretty good. They serve a selection of dim sum for dinner too which is great if you are looking for that at nights. The regular entrees here are okay — still prefer China Max for Cantonese dinner cuisine.

I came here before the remodel and recently visited again after the remodel for my friends graduation dinner and boyyyyy are things different! The place looks so much nicer. The remodel made the place more modern and a lot nicer looking than it was before. I think it also added space to the dining area as well. Along with the remodel they updated their furniture as well, which is very welcome since their furniture before was super old. Their food tastes about the same before and after the remodel. Its one of the best dim sum places in San Diego. Full disclosure though, being the best in San Diego is just«okay» compared to LA dim sum.

Have only been here twice but after our most recent visit, we will not be returning! Why — Long wait for food service and after 50 minutes and bringing it to their attention(at least twice), our food came and appeared to have been tainted or tampered with. My friend and I became ill soon after. Since I take daily probiotic, mine subsided after drinking ginger tea but my friend is still suffering from what appears to be a bad case of FOODPOISONING!

What do you do on a Sunday morning in SD? You go to get some dim sum! We had the usual har gaw, siu mai, chinese broccoli with oyster sauce, rice noodle with shrimp, deep fried shrimp balls, deep fried shrimp balls with sugar cane, spare ribs, bbq buns as well as steamed. Everything was delicious! The only disappointing part was they didn’t have any dim sum ladies pushing around the carts on the second floor. Not sure if there were any on the bottom floor either. It ain’t a dim sum place unless you get bad/mediocre service, only then, do you really feel like you’re in a legit chinese restaurant.

As a seasoned dim sum eater, I do not recommend this place at all! Of course service is one of the most important things when it’s comes to dining out. It took them 15 minutes to pick up our order card. After we received our food, let me tell you. The food lacks flavor and quality. It was so bad that we didn’t finish it. Siu Mai is one of my favorites and I couldn’t eat a another piece. I could def be the chef for the day, but I wouldn’t take a chance on coming back.

I still love Emerald’s, but they’re losing a star because service takes a long time especially if your table is at the bar area. I wish the carts would return because that’s what makes a complete dim sum experience. I hope the owners will re-evaluate & bring back the carts(at least for the weekend)

I will attempt to write an unbiased, fair review for Emerald since I have been coming to eat here for 5+ years while also considering the recent changes it has undergone. First of all, the new remodeling is very clean, modern, and sleek. It’s a very big upgrade from before and although it is nice, it strays away from traditional Chinese. The food was delicious before and still maintains the same quality now. HOWEVER, Emerald used to have a weekly special where most dishes would be considered a ‘small’ at ~$ 2.60. They don’t do this anymore. Even without the weekly specials a small would be no more than $ 3. NOW, the prices have risen exponentially. Pork Shiumai(used to be a small) is now a ‘large’ at $ 5.48 and the same goes with Shrimp Har Gow. YO, THAT’S MORETHANDOUBLETHEPRICE. ALSO, THEREAREONLYLIKE2DISHES(not including dessert items) THATARESMALLS. WHAT’S UPWITHTHAT?! I will say the food came out hot and fresh, since the waitresses now walk to and from the kitchen rather than using the dim sum carts. Although, I do miss the carts as it’s one of the main images you think of when you hear DIMSUM. Many of the previous dim sum items were removed. Sigh. I also feel terrible for the waitresses. Why? BECAUSETHEYAREOLDERCHINESEGRANDMASUSEDTOSLOWLYPUSHINGCARTSBUTARENOWFORCEDTORUNBACKANDFORTHFROMTHEKITCHENNONSTOP. Trying to give them a heat stroke or what? Overall, the new Emerald has a very nice, modern feel to it. The food is still very good, but overpriced. I used to leave the restaurant full and satisfied, but now not so much.

Mixed feelings about this place. I haven’t visited Emerald for awhile because the last time I was there we sat about 30 – 45 minutes and only one cart passed us by. I had no idea how much they changed the place. I remembered the food was good but I just hate waiting. So on this day I decided I might be able to wait or just flag down someone to get our food. When we arrived I noticed there was parking in the lot. Then when we walked in it was like a completely different restaurant. I don’t remember all these pillars. The new style and décor is great. No more food carts and so we ordered from the menu. The food came quick but the appearance was not quite there. I was highly disappointed because thinking since I don’t have to wait for the carts it will be so much better. They are pricey for dim sum and well this time around the quality was not that great. Maybe I came on an off day. Everything had an extra soggyness to it. I hate to say that about a place, but even the Chinese Broccoli had no crunch and that cost us $ 10. Pricey dim sum, I have never paid $ 4.88 for the cheapest item listed before. 4.88??? I mean that’s expensive for dim sum. Even Jasmine is at $ 3.09 for their cheapest item on the menu. I don’t get it. If this was out the world great tasting dim sum, then yes I’ll pay. Even the best dim sum in LA doesn’t cost this much. I don’t like giving out two stars, so when I feel like spending $ 50 for dim sum again for two people, then maybe I’ll return.

Extremely overpriced dim sum. Never coming back here again because it’s double the price of regular dim sum places. Most small dishes came out to be $ 5 – 6 each, so imagine how much a large dish costs. They don’t put prices on the menu so it’s very deceiving. Ordered about 12 dim sum dishes and the total costs was outrageous. Great service, elegant atmosphere and you order by the dim sum checklist. No dim sum carts, so not the best interactive place to eat. They charge for hot tea. Absurd. Overall, I am never coming back to Emerald, makes sense why it was empty in the first place. Jasmine has better food quality for an affordable price.

I was really hesitant about coming back and trying Emerald again after having such a disappointing experience during their grand reopening a few months ago but my husband was the one who said you’ve really got to give Emerald another try. Their service and cleanliness are both still on point but onto the taste and quality of their dim sum… we ordered the usual pork spare ribs with black bean sauce, pork shu mai, shrimp rice noodle, and a few other items. 1 word: REDEEMED! The flavors, presentation and quality were back to how I originally remembered Emerald to be from years ago and it was such a great dining experience this time around. I saw on a board in the front that they have several happy hour specials as well as a free soda when you check-in on Unilocal.Although the carts are gone now and that was always the fun part about the dim sum dining experience, I did enjoy the food and I would most likely come back for more dim sum!

Dim Sum! Yup, much better than Jasmine. It’s cleaner(especially that they renovated). The food is always yummy and delicious. No push carts going around which is fine with me because I want my food right away rather than waiting for someone to come by. The service was just alright. The young Asian guy we had as a server seemed a little uptight. No smile. :(The bus boys were much nicer. Seemed like he was someone of authority because he was telling people what to do. Overall, I’ll definitely return. I’ve had dinner here too and I enjoyed it very much.(I don’t remember what I ordered but I’ve been coming here for years)

I recently came to Emerald for a Chinese New Year banquet. It’s been a very long time since I’ve had Chinese food this good in the US of A. We had a 12 course traditional Hong Kong style banquet with a Californian twist. I was also very impressed to find that the dim sum are all created in-house by dim sum master chefs. Even in Hong Kong these days, the majority of restaurants no long make it in-house. Seafood is superior here including lobster! Definitely order the Peking Duck. It is an experience you won’t forget!

Very different from the normal Chinese Restaurant where you might go to get take-out. The menu here is extensive, very extensive, and offers a very wide range of items, many of which I had never heard of before, which, of course, are the best ones to try. We started with Shrimp Egg Rolls and, of the items we tried, these were our favorite and the best. The serving includes 4 of them, and they are delicious. We also had Pork Shiu Mai, Delux Shrimp Shui Mai and the Fried Sticky Rice. I did not care for the sticky rice because, to me, it tasted like it had been cooked in grease, but the other items were good. We also tried both of the deserts they offered, the Mango Pudding which was nice but not outstanding and the Creamy Egg Bun which really was good. Service was attentive and pleasant, but seemed rushed and like they were rushing us. In fact, before we had even been seated, the server was asking for our drink order. Prices seemed reasonable.

Emerald has come a long way! It’s newly remodeled to give off a more modern vibe and it couldn’t be better for business! It looks great! Sadly, there aren’t anymore carts pushed around as you are now able to order from a picture menu and have the items brought out individually. It kind of takes away from the excitement of finding your favorite cart lady and waving her over, but it still works. I appreciate it. The food is still good. you’ve got to have two left arms if you mess up dim sum. I always always always get the shrimp egg rolls, meat dumpling(the football), andddddd har gow. Everything is good so just pick and choose as you please. Downside: $ 3.00 for a soda, are you kidding me. I’ll have tea, wait no that costs money too! I’ll have water! 2 stars for emerald because their customer service could use some freshening up. Oh and also the prices have changed if I remember correctly. A 60 dollar meal turned 100 with tip. Yikes!

Emerald used to be my GO-TO dim sum place. It was the best dim sum in San Diego, and they had the best shrimp egg rolls. However, I believe it was recently sold and under new management. With that management came a remodel of the old Chinese restaurant, but the quality of the food went down drastically. They seem to be wanting to transition to a high-class restaurant like Din Tai Fung. The dim sum is horrible now and there are no more cart ladies. Cart Ladies are the very essence of dim sum! I was so devastated when I came back here to see the dim sum of my childhood completely changed. The last 15+ years of my life have been great here, but now it’s just some white-washed, overpriced trash. And I mean it when I say overpriced. It’s ridiculous pricing that isn’t on the menu, it’s just on the bill. I wouldn’t recommend this place to anyone anymore. You’re better off at Jasmine or Pearl. RIP Emerald.

First time eating at a dimsum place in san diego. Im glad she chose this place to eat! This place is very clean and the food is awesome. Althoigh when i think of dimsum, it’s cheap and a hole in the wall kind of place, emerald is the opposite. Its not super expensive and it’s definitely not a hole in the wall. Would come again. The shrimp har gow is the most delicious thing I’ve tasted at a dimsum place… Definitely worth coming to eat here if you enjoy good food for a decent price!

I recently ate here for the first time after its remodel. I must say, the restaurant looks really nice and clean now. I came in for dim sum. The biggest difference is that they don’t have the workers pushing carts around the place. You order the dim sum you want and it comes out to you fresh. I like it because the egg rolls and fried shrimp balls are hot and crispy when they arrive to your table. I didn’t take a look at that bill because my mother in law paid for it. So I wouldn’t be able to tell you how the prices have changed. It’s definitely a good place to get dim sum though if you’re in the area. Oh yeah, you order through a scantron type of sheet. We ordered an item and the order came out totally wrong. Be aware that the scantron can make mistakes!

Order as you please dim-sum, no carts! Legit. SUPER expensive though. The food here is really good and they come out fast after you order. You order on a scantron and you provide the amount of quantity you want. Came here with a party of 11, during rush hour and got seated fast. Ordered and food came, super good and filling. This place isn’t bad, but just super pricey

If you are in the mood for dim sum(yam cha), Emerald is a good fit. Recently remodeled, the look of the place is a whole lot nicer than it used to be. We were a little disappointed that we had to order off a paper menu rather than having the people walking around pushing the carts full of steaming plates. Maybe they do that on the weekends? We enjoyed 10 or so different items. Nothing was bad, but a couple of things were not quite as excellent as we were hoping for. Overall it was very good. Love the bar nestled in the back of the joint. Saw a few good, local tap handles. Might need to get back here again for a dinner.

Use to come here before the remodel, it has been a good while since then. Walked in here a few days ago and, wow, looks a lot better. More modern, much more space and they aren’t pushing the carts around. Great lighting, much better. Menu is very legible and clear even with pictures. Prices just can’t be beat for Dim Sum, my opinion personally.

I have been a frequent customer since Susan Lew opened Emerald Seafood in the 1990s. Came here for Christmas Day Dim Sum with the family. First time since the remodel and shocked that the steam carts were gone. Saddened to see the beautiful white Buddha statue with Tripitaka and disciples gone as well. They now have customers order off of a «sushi style» form and the prices have skyrocketed to match. We had 7 people and the bill came to $ 185 with tip. When the soy sauce noodles and fried rice came they were already cold. Everything came at once so by the time we got to the last dishes they were cold too. Much better to order off the cart and keep items warm. Service was terrible with having to ask multiple times for water and soda. There was a free soda coupon on Unilocal that we showed to our server, but didn’t get credit for — came off his tip. Quality of the food was down and portion size much smaller. In essence, it felt like we were ripped off by higher prices, smaller portions, and poor service. I saw the friendly manager who’s been there forever, so not sure if rumors of new ownership is true. Sadly, we will not comeback. There are 3 better options for Dim Sum in San Diego. End of an era.

Dim Sum means — Touch the heart. I see people giving this place low stars because they want cheap dim sum; but people, this dim sum is quality. They are handmade and filled to the brim with quality ingredients. If you want cheap dim sum, go somewhere else. If you want push carts where you need to wait and hope that the type you want is coming around soon, then go somewhere else. Hole in the wall it’s not. So don’t come here if you want that. BUT if you want to patronize a nicer, higher grade, family run dim sum establishment where you can order like sushi(from checking off the ones you want on a menu) and have it delivered hot and fresh, in a nice atmosphere and yeah pay normal prices instead of discount prices, come here. I’ve been here three times and recommended it to my family and they all like it too. So try it out, with an open mind, and you decide. I’m down for the taste, quickness and quality.

I’ve been here a few times now but it looks like recently they upgraded the place. The menu is newer and they also redecorated the inside. I came here for a lunch on a Sunday for dim sum. They didn’t have the carts that you normally see at other places where you just pick out food you want to eat. They had a scantron system where you fill out your order and give it to the waiter/waitress. This was good cause the food they bring out to you is fresh. It may take a bit longer than how the food carts were but the freshness makes up for it. I think they increased the prices but the food here is really good. The menu is nice as well because it shows you a picture of what exactly you are ordering. It wasn’t that busy here so the service was good. Not sure how it is when it gets busy. The only thing I don’t like about the area is that the parking can be difficult at times. The spots are really narrow. They also have a little area to park below but it is really tight in there. Overall, this place is pretty good if you are craving dim sum. The food is excellent and fresh! The prices may be a little more but the quality of the food is well worth it. Stop by here if you are in the area and are craving dim sum!

I haven’t been to Emerald, let alone dim sum, in a while, so it was a pleasant surprise when I walked in on a Sunday morning around 10:30 to find the place completely renovated! With only a few tables and many servers preparing themselves for would be a busy lunch rush, we were seated immediately and offered tea. They offer a small selection, typical for most dim sum places: chysanthamum, jasmine, oolong, shoumei, and pu-erh. My recommendation would be chrysanthamum — very flowerly and light, it washes away the salt and grease of everything dim sum! Tea is $ 1.50 per person, and it looks like many restaurants are beginning to adopt the tea surcharge for customers. As usual, my favorites are always the spare ribs and the shau mai. They’re just the staple of my dim sum. The pork was nice and tender, fell off the bones with great flavor. The shau mai were large pieces, thin wrapping and alot of filling. I wasn’t a huge fan of the BBQ pork buns — they came in a bun that was kind of sticky on the outside, and the bun was DELICIOUS. It was almost like a bakery bun for dessert. But the pork on the inside kind of lacked the pork consistency. The flavor was sort of there, but the meat felt a little more oatmeal-y and soggy then anything else. If you’re a lover of potstickers, I loved the fact that the potsticker wrapping was incredibly thin and there was more filling that dough! The xiao long bao came in a set of 4, each in its individual foil cup. Tasty but a little annoying to remove the food from the foil tin container. I think it may be pre-made somewhere else, and simply steamed(or perhaps pre-assembled), but cooked in-house. I loved the white sugar sponge cake — it was more sticky and gooey than I’m use to, but it’s still got that classic white sugar steamed rice cake taste. And I can’t forget my beloved tofu pudding in its sweet ginger sauce. That is my dessert of choice at dim sum, encompassing silken tofu in sweet sweet yummy ginger syrup. While there’s something reminiscent about dim sum carts, I do have to say that using a menu order system is much more efficient and less chaotic. I feel like customers have their dishes faster and you also don’t have that restaurant smell that clings to your clothes because there’s no food being pushed around the restaurant. For the 8 dishes we ordered, our total came out to be $ 40(excluding tax and tip). Most of our dishes were«medium» sized priced at $ 4.88, with small dishes at $ 3.58. Service was very prompt and fast, but the restaurant was fairly empty and many servers were waiting for the lunch rush. I’m not sure how good or bad service is during rush hours. I definitely would like to come back here as my experience was positive. I guess I don’t have the disappointment that others have had, being that I wasn’t a regular customer!

My family came here for dimsum at 9ish in the morning as someone had a flight they needed to take in the early afternoon. We were greeted and then took a while to order. We just had to fill out the scantron sheet on what we wanted as we looked at the menu detailed with pictures to show what the dish looked like. I kind of missed the carts that they would push around for dimsum. Food was brought out fresh and just out. We had a lovely time devouring everything. We decided to order in waves. So fill out the scantron sheet and just ask for another so you could see how hungry you are after you finish the first wave of ordering. If memory serves me right they charge for tea — so heads up to those tea lovers! Back in NY(I know I’m in California now but. still think about NY time to time) tea was complimentary — guess it’s different here. My to go tos were the shu mai, shrimp dumplings, sweet tofu soup, and the egg custard tarts. Parking was not so bad when we went, but I bet it was a nightmare later on in the afternoon on a weekend.

First let me start off by saying I love dim sum I’ve came to this location twice. Recently I noticed the new updated renovations and I have to say it looks great! There is plenty of parking which makes me extremely happy since no one likes having to wait before they wait for their food. I came during lunch with a friend and we were immediately seated. Our host/server was very nice and accommodating. He even cut my shrimp fried ball because I broke my chopstick in half trying to cut it and it literally flew across the room. He was nice about it and everyone had a good laugh. Prices vary around at least $ 3.00+ per dim sum item. In total of 6 items(4 seafood 2 beef items) total came out to $ 38. Well worth it!!! There are cheaper places near by but I think this is one of the better places to go with friends and family. The dim sum here is hot and fresh and doesn’t come out pushed in carts like why I’m use to. But when I went on a weekend that was happening so it may just depend on the day/time. You should try the rice paper/shrimp with soy sauce poured on it. The shrimp balls. The shu mai. Anything shrimp is basically DELICIOUS here. They also have this new thing where you have to mark in your food by scantron just like in high school. It can be cool or annoying.

I’ve been going to this restaurant for more than 10+ years and this is the first time I’m writing a review for this place. They recently remodeled the whole restaurant and it is so much nicer and modern now. Probably the most modern dim sum restaurant in San Diego with a nice twist of Chinese accented decorations. There’s always parking available but the parking spaces are super compact. I wish they would repaint the parking lines so that they would be bigger. Another big change is that they have completely gotten rid of the traditional Chinese carts! Sounds crazy because that’s what makes the whole experience real. But now you just simply order what you want by filling out an order form, just like when you order sushi. Generally, they bring out most of your items out all at once and some later. This new method feels so different, but I actually like it a lot better because: 1. You’re not constantly waiting around for the carts to get to your table 2. You get to order and eat all the items that you want to eat, instead of waiting for the item that you want, and sometimes it doesn’t come out at all so you give up trying to look for it. 3. You get all the food all at once so you can start eating faster 4. They have a full picture menu so you can see what looks good to you. 5. Their menu has all the prices on there so you know what you’re paying for each dish. 6. They have more free staff to service you ALOT better. The only complaint is that the prices do seem to be more expensive than before. And I also noticed that even though they are still busy, there’s still plenty of tables left, so there’s never a wait! Overall, fresh and delicious dim sum for all!

Wow Emerald and their remodeling. The restaurant is nice inside now and reminds me a lot of dumpling inn revamp. Perhaps they used the same designer, contractors, and etc. Just a nicer look doesn’t justify a high spike in prices. They took away the push cart system for dim sum. The only thing iconic about getting dim sum is the push cart. I’m not sure who made that decision but I must say it’s a bad one. The dim sum menu is now limited and must be order through a scantron type of paper. Not fun! The food still came out like warm and the same freshness. Nothing has change or improve there. Tea is now $ 1.50 per person Medium dim sum is $ 5.80 I believe We were a party of 3 and we paid $ 80 not worth it because I left hungry :( Food is way overpriced!!! Sorry we will not be going back.

We went here on a weekday morning when they just opened. As we walked in, we realized the whole place was renovated. I was craving some dim sum and wondered if they served dim sum on a weekday. Long and behold, the server said they no longer do the cart service but they do serve it all day. Sweet, I am cool with that. They hand you a menu and give you a scantron to mark what you want. At least you don’t have to wait for the cart you want although I do love the cart experience. Everything was pretty good that we ordered(mostly shrimp dishes). Check-in with your Unilocal app and get a free soda. Yes, we will be back!

Dropped by for dim sum to check our their renovation, but really wish I didn’t. Total regret. I already thought China Max was expensive for dim sum, Emerald is easily 30−40% more expensive with smaller portions. 1 order of har gow was $ 5.48…and they were literally bite sized. Even though they moved away from the cart system, the food didn’t taste any fresher or hotter as most of the dishes came out lukewarm =/. Food came out quite slow, but service was pretty quick. My party of 3 left $ 60 poorer and worst of all, still hungry.

Date of visit: 8÷1÷2015 When I go to restaurants in the Convoy area, I am fully prepared for less than stellar service, but great Asian food. However, all of the staff at Emerald were so friendly and helpful to the point that I was actually shocked about the great quality of service. Dannah and Channa invited Cam and I out for a Saturday dim sum brunch. Since I’ve never had dim sum before, I was definitely down to try out this experience. Upon walking in, Dannah and Channa were surprised at the new layout. Emerald has just renovated the entire restaurant and looks really nice right now. Our waiter mentioned that this was the first week of their opening. They also go rid of the dim sum carts, so ordering is now menu based instead of cart chasing based. Some of the waiters will still come around with a tray of food and ask if you want anything. When you’re seated, you’ll be given a menu, scantron sheet, and a pencil. Everything on the menu translates to a line on the scantron sheet. Once you’re done selecting the dishes and quantities, you give it to the waiter and the food will start coming out. We also all opted to get tea, which just kept coming out as we emptied the pot. I think we got about 4 pots of tea before leaving. It was also nice to not feel rushed as we were able to order food as we wanted and drink our tea while talking. The wait staff also monitored our table and almost immediately picked up any plates that were finished and asked if we wanted anything else. #21 Steamed BBQ Pork Bun. Cameron was hoping that these would live up to the ones that he got while living in Beijing, but he said it just wasn’t the same. I thought that they tasted pretty good and were fantastic with the chili oil. #14 Dried Shrimp Rice Roll. Channa accidentally ordered this thinking that it was #11 with the fresh shrimp. Unfortunately, it was a the dried shrimp and just a little to «shrimpy» for me. It was also really salty because of the dried shrimp and the extra sauce didn’t help this at all. #17 Steamed Shanghai Pork Dumplings. These are similar to the xiao long bao at dumpling inn, but not as good. I didn’t get to eat this until the end, so it was a little cold for me, but there also wasn’t a lot of soup in the dumpling. It was still good enough and I mixed it with the chili oil and some soy sauce. #34 Pot Stickers. I really enjoyed these pot stickers as they were full of meat and went well with the chili oil and soy sauce. If you can’t tell yet, I am a huge fan of the chili oil and mixed it with everything to give it a bit of spice. #?? Turnip Cake. This was Dannah’s favorite dish. I’m not a huge fan of turnips, but I couldn’t really taste them. It had the consistency of a squishy potato pankcake and tasted almost as such. I also mixed this with the chili oil and soy sauce. #11 Shrimp Rice Roll. Channa ordered this on the second round and it was much better than the dried shrimp rice roll. The shrimp was fresh and complimented the rice wrapper and broccoli perfectly. Will definitely be getting this again! #30BBQ Pork Tart. I ordered this on the second round as I really liked the BBQ pork from the pork bun. The tart was a little dry, but I dipped it in the mustard, which made it really good. Overall, I’m a big fan of Emerald and will definitely be going back. Between being able to have small portions of a lot of different foods and the exemplary service, I was definitely satisfied. Note that I had eaten a small breakfast only an hour before, but was still enticed to try at least a bit of each dish.
