This is solely based on my experience at Boston Subworks on June 29th, 2012. Boston Subworks is without a doubt the King of Cheesesteaks in San Antonio, and possibly in all of Texas. After eating a cheesesteak at Boston Subworks, you will never need to go Texadelphia again; but I’d still like to point-out that this is a good Cheesesteak(for San Antonio). Seriously though, if you haven’t been to Boston Subworks, you need to go, right now. I’m not kidding, go… right…now! Now, If you have been there, and disagree, you need to go back because either a.) you went on an ‘off-day’(which seems impossible with the quality of food I just got), or b.) you have no idea what you’re talking about. If it just so happens that you disagree because of reason ‘b’, then there isn’t much I can do to help you out. So yes Texadelphia, I am sorry; but you have to go down a peg after what I just had at Boston Subworks! Damn…

This was one of my favorite sandwich places in Austin and now it’s one of my favorites in San Antonio. I always get the Philly Chicken Cheeseteak sandwich and I am never disappointed. Although I love the sandwich, my favorite item on the menu is the chips and queso. I know, weird because it’s a sandwich place but I have always loved the chips and queso. The staff is always friendly as well and the place is very clean. I keep going back and unless they ever get rid of the chips and queso, it will remain one of my favorite places for a great sandwich. By the way, I’m not from Philly so maybe some of you that are would say that this is not really cheeseteak but I’m a Texan so to me it is. :P

Seems easy enough to order off the wall a nice hot tasty Philly cheese sandwich. They have Natty light here, in small glass bottles like Red Stripe. There was a cool selection of teas, which thrilled me until I saw they were presweetened. The special mustards, cheese and onions made my sandwich. The bun got soggy and there wasn’t much taste to the chicken. I was surprised how packed the place was on a freezing cold Monday afternoon. I was also kind of surprised I wasn’t blown away by anything in particular here.

Warning: I grew up in and around Philadelphia. I finally got around to trying Texadelphia recently and although it was tasty, I really can’t give it a superb review, because… well, it’s not really a cheesesteak in my eyes. First the good. Queso and chips as a side seems a bit odd to me, but I have to admit it was some of the best queso I’ve had in awhile. Chips were fresh(I’ve been getting a lot of stale chips around town lately — it’s a citywide epidemic) and well salted. Staff was friendly as we approached the counter and the menus are clearly(and big) posted on the wall. Hard to struggle at the counter with what to order when you have menus as clearly posted as this. The cheesesteak itself wasn’t terrible, but it lacked in a few key departments. Now for the bad. First, the place smelled when entering. It had that days old grease smell that I can remember from my days at FWOT(Fingers, Wings, and Other Things). The kind of smell any cook knows as the smell you just can’t wash out of your clothes no matter how hard you try. Time to get under the hood and clean those vents(a job all restaurant workers loathe). The cheesesteak itself was served as a sloppy mess. The taste was ok, although the beef tasted a bit too beefy. Typically this comes from a) cheaper cuts of meat or b) flavor injection. I know it seems odd to complain about beef tasting beefy, buy if you’ve ever had the real deal you probably know what I’m talking about. The selection of cheesesteaks at Texadelphia try too hard too impress in my opinion. A true cheesesteak is three ingredients — beef, cheese, and fried onions. That’s it. I know people like choices and even in the hallowed home of the cheesesteak you can order things like BBQ bacon cheesesteaks and cheesesteak hoagies(they add lettuce, tomato, raw onion, and mayo), but for a purist there’s no other way. Adding fried green peppers(as most restaurant chains do) is a disgrace. Save those for sausage sandwiches. Hot peppers are only slightly acceptable. The roll is usually the first failure of cheesesteak makers outside of the Motherland, but I have to give the roll credit here. It was almost right. What disturbed me was the outside of the roll, which was wet and shiny with oil(or perhaps the aforementioned grease floating in the air). The outside should be dry — it’s the inside where the grease should be working its magic. The size and presentation lost me as well. Cheesesteaks are served on Philadelphia’s ubiquitous hoagie roll. Typically 12″ in length(or larger), the cheesesteak is a hearty meal and should be treated as such(and leftovers are always tasty a few hours later). These shorter rolls cause two problems — a visual disappointment and a overflow of innards. Cheesesteaks are messy affairs(look up «cheesesteak lean») and because of this a talented grill master knows how to stuff the roll and still keep the bread’s opening closed. Failure to do so just results in a mess of beef rolling off the cheesesteak with each bite. Cheesesteaks aren’t meant to look fancy. In fact, a good one usually looks pretty dull to the eyes. Amazing cheesesteaks aren’t meant to be a feast to any sense other than your tastebuds. While I didn’t love Texadelphia, I’d probably go back if I had a craving. It’ll do, but the Liberty Bell weeps knowing that this is what the world thinks a cheesesteak is.

WTF happened to you Texadelphia. Your cheesesteaks used to be premium quality. I went there for the first time in years and my chicken was dry and there was hardly any cheese. it should be a cheesey mess!?? It used to be? Are times that tough that you’re holding back on the cheesey goodness of a cheesesteak??? Also what happened to the awesome mustard sauce that used to be so well known? I ended up with straight Grey Poupon? Very disappointed in you Texadelphia.

Great cheese steak sandwich. I get mine with extra cheese and jalapenos and it is yummy-to-my-tummy! I’m also a big fan of the chips and queso. They are basic, but tasty. Queso is creamy and delicious. Addictive! My son loves their burgers and seasoned fries. Atmosphere is great and staff is friendly. Must admit service is much better when the owner Jesse is there.

Long-time fan. always suggest the queso, followed by a chicken philly with grilled mushrooms and jalapenos! Mango iced-tea is another nice touch!

When Irma suggested we meet for drinks and food at Texadelphia, I was perplexed. I had never heard of this joint and when I did my research online It just sounded like a fast food joint that happen to serve beer. I was a little wrong. So this place is a mix of philly sandwiches and tex mex. Our group of Irma, Alma, Ralph, S and myself started out with the Trifecta appetizer which had guacamole; salsa and queso with thin white corn chips. The guacamole was so very good and creamy. The queso had a little bit of a kick and salsa seemed to be fire roasted. We ate it all before I could snap some pix. I had the Founder’s Favorite: 100% Certified Angus Beef goodness. Stuffed with grilled onions, mozzarella cheese, mushrooms, and jalapeños smothered in mustard sauce. This thing was awesome wicked. Just greasy enough to be cardiologically concerned but so tasty you just don’t care. I had the large size and was well sated. We shared fries which were also very good. There were so many kinds of dipping sauces to chose from, even mayo but nobody want to try mayo with their fries. I’m guessing this place does a booming lunchtime business as this evening was a little sparse. They didn’t even kick us out long after we had finished our meal and remained just to shoot the breeze. I shall return. 4.1 Stars out of 5

Texadelphia is there for two kinds of people. #1 Men. #2 Anyone who likes a good cheesesteak sub, but can’t fly on a whim to Philadelphia. Hence the name, Texadelphia. This is not a family friendly place, although you might be fooled by the outdoor seating. Looking around, most people are there with a buddy, chowing down. They are totally annoyed by my kids who keep running back and forth to the video games machine, which are not for 6 and under. The subs(I had the cheesesteak of course), although quite good, are a little on the small side for the price. In Philly, you get a hefty cheese steak and a drink for under $ 5. I wanted that. Instead we paid over $ 30 on subs for the 4 of us. We will go back because my husband loves the jalapenos on the steak and I could use a little reminder of the east coast, even if it resembles it only a little.

I’ve been a fan for several years. I usually get the chicken Texican and sub fries for chips and salsa and then use my queso to dip my fries in. I’m a big fan of the creamy mustard sauce you can get to add to your sandwich. I don’t stray far from my favorite, but had a group of co-workers I took to lunch one day who had way different tastes than me and all gave them a thumbs up. It’s a very man friendly restaurant and men usually outnumber the ladies, maybe because of the sports on the big tvs scattered all around. I always get the regular and have never left feeling less than sated, but they do offer a larger version for a little more cash. Friendly staff and quick service keeps me coming back.
