It’s a trap! Not very friendly and the breakfast tacos were nothing to get excited about. Had a bean and cheese and a country and egg. There was something definitely off with the bean and cheese as it didn’t taste right. Also seems like the cheese was Velveeta which is a major fail. Will not return

This 5 star review is based on food and service. Ruben’s Café is a simple mom and pop restaurant on the south side but the food and service is top notch. I came here to kill time while my car was having work done across the street. With about 10 tables in the place, they definitely are attentive. My order was promptly taken and coffee came quick. Even the mom and sister came by after order was taken to make sure I was OK; mom even came out from kitchen to confirm my order. Once the food arrived it was hot and fresh. I recommend you get a breakfast plate with hash browns as they were excellent. I had the #14 which included eggs, beans, sausage, hash browns and tortillas; all this and coffee was under $ 10! While I don’t live nearby, I will definitely return to Ruben’s Café when in the area.

I’ve been coming here since 1995 and the place has never dissapointed. Ruben has kept this place running smooth and has invested money in building a nice pleasant atmoshphere for his customers. Although not always the fastest, his food is always fresh and hot. However, to his credit, there is a posted sign that says things run slower here because everything is made fresh. The service has always been friendly and Ruben many times surprises his customers with complimentary desserts for lunch. He also always makes it a point to personally welcome his customers with a handshake. All in all this is a great place for great Mexican food and the best homemade tortillas in town.

I came here after my husband kept raving about the food. All he ever had was the breakfast tacos but he could not shut up about them! I went for lunch and had the gordita plate while my husband had the enchilada plate. The cheese enchiladas were ok, LOTS of cheese and hardly any enchilada sauce. The rice was very mushy and not very flavorful. The beans were alright, but had no real taste to them. My gordita could have been better, the bread in which it came was not very thick at all(a must for a gordita!) so it was more like a crunchy round taco, plus the chicken was a bit dry. I also had a lemonade, which was way too bitter. Their flour tortillas are delicious though — almost like mom makes! The chips and salsa they serve before your meal are very good too. The chips are freshly made so we received ours hot and still greasy. The salsa was a red sauce which was pretty spicy but not enough to burn your taste buds. Afterward, my husband swore that their tacos were much better than the food we had just eaten(it must be because of the tortillas)… Bottom line — come here for the breakfast tacos(from what I hear) & the chips and salsa, not for lunch. Note: I do believe they close at 2:30 during the week.
