Papa’s Burgers

This place was amazing. My friend and I split our orders half and half so we could try both meals, and we were not disappointed. We ordered the #2 and the grilled chicken sandwich — both so good. The bread is amazing and the meat was delectable. The owner was very nice and the service was great. I definitely recommend this place!

Hands down one of the best burgers I have ever had. Service was on point, the owner was so helpful and the food came out so fast. I would definitely drive from my side of town to come eat here again. The bun is what tied the burger so light and fluffy with a hint of sweetness!

These are the best burgers in San Antonio and one of the most delicious burgers I’ve ever had!!! Came here after my brother’s Air Force graduation and he loved the place. We received great customer service and the burgers are AMAZING! My brother and I ordered the bacon cheeseburger and the rest of my family got the original Papa’s Burger, we all loved our burgers the buns and fresh ingredients give these burgers a unique taste! Definitely a must go if you’re in the San Antonio area or if you want to treat your Airman out to a great burger after their 8 week training!

One of the better burgers I’ve had in a while. The onion rings were awesome. The buns really make the burger. Nice neighborhood feel to it.

Excellent burger with fun and excellent service! 6 of us stopped in for lunch today and we were served some of the best cheeseburgers we have ever eaten. They were hot and juicy with crisp fresh vegetables and that bun… that bun made a great hamburger, FANTASTIC! I’m not really sure what it was or why it was so good, but they have a nice little secret here!!! This is a tiny little place run by some of the friendliest people we have had the pleasure to meet. Give the food a try, you won’t be sorry!

We specifically called the owner the day before to ask if he would be open on Mothers Day and he said yes. With my family excited to try the burgers because we raved about how good they were, we planned a group lunch here today. Family members drove from all different areas of town to meet here… Too bad when we got there… there was a hand written note on the door saying they were closed!!! We were embarrassed and left scrambling to find somewhere to go! We would have been loyal customers but we do not plan on going back! Super disappointing! The owner doesn’t truly care about his business enough to be honest to customers. He could have told us when we called that they would be closed!
To many burger places around town to deal with this crap! While the food was good, customer service is just as important and they get an F in my book in this area.

I would give it 10 stars if I could. I was in from Las Vegas visiting my son at the Air Force Base and wanted a burger. I hopped on Unilocal and found this place.
The burgers are amazinging!!! They do it the old fashion way, hot and juicy! I had a #2, cheeseburger and fries. The bun was amazing, probably the best I’ve had, and the meat was flavorful and juicy. The fries were large cut, hot, and lightly seasoned with salt/pepper…just how I like them.
I spent some time speaking with the owner who said he opened up the place for his elderly father to come and hang out during the day and that is where he got the name «Papa’s».
Do not pass up this place if you have an opportunity, you will not regret it!!!

Tried the cheese burger. Very good burger. Best I have had in awhile. The guys that work here were very helpful and friendly. Will definitely come back.

Since I travel so much n have had an abundance of burgers, Papa’s Burgers is the place to come for a great burger. Most of the burger chain restaurants, you add the regular mayo, ketchup and mustard. These burgers do not need any of that. The bun is so delicious. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Thank you Papa’s for a great burger.

I bought a bunch of meals for work. This is my review the service was great. The buns were good and the vegetables fresh and crisp. The fries were good. The only issue we had was the meat it was tuff and taste like a frozen freezer burned patty.
I’m not sure if they always taste like that but everyone of my coworkers said the same thing tuff rubbery meat.
The place would produce excellent results if they would just use fresh meat. That would put it over the top as an excellent burger place because the other ingredients were excellent.
I will give it another shot maybe it was a fluke. I mean almost 40 reviews giving it 5 stars.

found this hole in the wall on Unilocal and given that the area is somewhat of a food desert with slim pickings, and papa’s had pretty good reviews, i was excited to give em a try. my friend and i stopped by to get lunch to go. we got two of the more popular and recommended things– the chili burger (+ cheddar cheese) and the wth chicken sandwich, with a side of fries. the total was close to $ 10 for each of us. the burger buns were on point, but that was pretty much the only highlight. the chili burger was good but wasn’t really that special. kinda just a hybrid between a burger and a regular sloppy joe, and there wasn’t even that much chili on it. it would have been nice to have some lettuce and tomato to balance out the meat too. the wth chicken sandwich was a huge huge fail. the sandwich sounded good (chicken + grilled bologna + guac + blt) but the chicken was probably the worst chicken i’ve ever had in my entire life. it was so rubbery/​cardboardy that you couldn’t cut or bite into it. i tried to rip it apart with my hands and it made an audible tearing noise. not even exaggerating. and it had zero flavor. unless i guess you count cardboard as a flavor. it was just straight up dry and stringy. you can even see how terrible it was from the picture i took. i very very rarely throw out food (only if it’s literally inedible) and in this case, my friend and i both had to completely take out the chicken. what a disappointment. oh, and the fries were pretty bad too. borderline soggy, flavorless, and kinda seemed like frozen grocery store quality fries. i wish the chicken sandwich hadn’t ruined the entire experience. i was hoping to like papa’s bc they had some stickers on the checkout counter from boulder, colorado (my home sweet home). but gotta tell it like it is, and i can’t quite recommend this place if one of their most highly recommended menu items is so horrible. :/​

The «Hole in the Wall» burger place you don’t want to miss! Unique setting, very welcoming, and the burgers… well they convey «you just gotta come try me!» And finally… the buns… not your ordinary round… but you just gotta come try these fluffy buttery buns! As my brother told the worker «Papa knows his buns!»

I had the El clientele Burger (combo #6). First, the customer service was the best I’ve had anywhere and The Burger and fries were delicious. You have to stop in and try this place.

Came in today to tackle their «raging bull» it is a two pound burger with cheese, jalapeños, lettuce, tomato and I added bacon and it was delicious as always. The food here is so fresh and amazing. The buns they use are delicious and perfectly buttered. Love coming here

Probably the best burger I’ve ever had!!!
My first visit to Papa’s was at lunch, on a whim, based on the great ratings on *yelp and convenience from my office. To say the least, I was blown away. Not by a bunch of bells and whistles or anything fancy, but by the deliberately, but genuine, old school look and feel of the place. I was treated like family from the beginning.
It was a tough decision, but after seeing the menu, I decided on the #5 chili burger, one of my favorite types. It was an AWESOME burger. Served hot and messy on a delicious toasted bun (specialty bread from Vegas), the burger was juicy and full of that old fashioned flavor we all look for, reminiscent of the hamburger stand near the house where we grew up. Even the fries were some of the best I’ve had!
I’m about to go back for round two!

Best old fashioned burger you have had in a long long time! You can’t go wrong with Papa’s burgers! COUPLE THAT WITH AN OLD SCHOOL SHAKE AND FRIES! Oh yeah you are missing out if you don’t treat yourself to the best burger in SATX!
Forget the fru fru former burgers… This is good olé fashioned flavor and taste! Your girl will love you for it, your man will watch the chick flick and like it, your kids will clean up their rooms for it! DUDE… THIS BURGER IS THE BOMB!!!

Let’s start with the obvious, it’s tiny & cluttered. Set back from the road behind a tent covered eating area, we were thankful for all of the signs directing the way! Where you order is not where you eat. Go in, place your order, and either sit outside or traverse the short uneven distance outside to the movie room. We chose the latter. «Watch Your Step» signs are everywhere, so Please Do!
Robert, the owner, greeted us immediately upon entry. He’s a super nice friendly guy, who will give you the entire history of the place in about 5 minutes. At warp speed! I know he reads the reviews (he said so, commenting on a previous 4-​star review), which is why I’m going to be pretty honest in this review. Robert, no hard feelings. A passionate man deserves passionate truth to up his game, ok? Slow your roll, dude! Too much info at warp speed can come across like a used car dealer, ok? We are already in the door, you know we are going to order. Greet us, explain the menu & ordering process, & give us a moment to contemplate. While we are paying you can share the history. Too much info off the bat can feel overwhelming and create a feeling of under the clock to order.
We ordered El Caliente (mild) and fish sandwich. Both with fries & fountain drinks.
He warned me that Diet Pepsi was tasting off and waiting on soda rep to fix. Props for the warning. Wife & I went with Sierra Mist. It tasted off too, something going on with their syrup: CO2 ratio.
2 STARS (1 but he knew & was taking steps to rectify so props to him).
Fries were just ok. Needed to be cooked longer and seasoned more.

Fish was nice whitefish filet, piping hot & nice batter: fish ratio. But it was bland. The tarter sauce was tasty and much needed to add flavor to the fish.

El Caliente burger was excellent! I didn’t need to ask for light jalapeños because the peppers weren’t that hot. Wife & I loved the burger! Fresh juicy tasty perfection!

The movie room needs some help. The metal chairs are too short for the rectangle tables. Wife and I only had 2 seat options: a picnic table or tall bar table. A random 80’s movie was playing but couldn’t hear it and no closed captioning so you could only guess what was happening. Suggestion: install small speaker in each corner to take care of that. Cheap easy fix. Make sure chairs for the tables. I’m average 5’5″ but Wife is 5’0″ so We would have needed booster chairs to reach our food. But it was inside & warm soooooo

Unilocalers: we will be back! Especially in nicer weather when we can sit outside and enjoy the food & the day! Wife & I might split the double next time and enjoy what the place was named after, and maybe bring a couple brews wash it down.
Ultimately, I gave 4 stars because I believe in this place and I believe in this owner! He wears his heart on his sleeve & I know this place is going to be epic!

At first look, place looks tiny and cluttered… owner introduced himself and very friendly. Made us feel welcome and at home. Complete with a movie room in back! Burgers came out and the buns!!! The buns are to die for!!!
I ordered the #6 HOT and delicious jalapeño goodness! My husband had #3 bacon cheeseburger. Fries were good. We will definitely come back to enjoy the great hospitality, ambience and oh yes, the burgers!!!
