Simply put: it tastes like your grandma made it, as long as your grandma could cook. Genuinely delicious and made with love.

That was off the chain. Hella good, pork chops fell off the bone, tender, gravy was on point, green and green beans cooked to perfection. I will return. It was amazing.

I loved this place. It’s not fancy, but it’s like eating at grandma’s house. Those recipes that you have, but just can’t get right at home. I enjoyed everything, and out waitress Wanda was very pleasant and ensured we we happy. It’s a little difficult to leave because you will want to take a nap after your meal. Mrs. Kitchen’s deserves the great reviews.

We always enjoy a meal at Mrs. Kitchen– esp. the catfish, meatloaf, collard greens and black-eyed peas. I wish they served fried okra, too. The restaurant is in a 100 year old house

The food was ridiculously good. I would recommend looking them up on Google for the trend on busy times etc. We sat down right away but by the time we were leaving there was quite a bit of wait time. There are only a dozen tables as this is a converted home/restaurant. I had the 2 entrée/3 sides. Meatloaf/catfish & dirty rice/greens/yams. Cherry Koolaid. I could not have made this meal better myself

The first time I ate here was over a year ago and I was not a fan. HOWEVER thank goodness I decided to give it a second try! My go to order at any soul food restaurant is fried catfish, baked Mac and cheese and collard greens. Mrs. Kitchen has to be my favorite for this dish now, I didn’t think I would ever find a good soul food restaurant here and they are great at it. Huge portions and tasty food, what more could I ask for? Service isn’t very fast because the place gets packed during lunch so understandable, but I usually have to scarf down my meal when I go during lunch. Also parking is extremely limited. But the food is definitely worth crossing the road for!

3.25 stars. Perhaps the only thing sweeter than soul food are the wonderful people who cook and serve it to customers on a daily basis. If you are going to sit down to a meal at Mrs. Kitchen, expect a solid amount of food at a bargain price where everyone that you interact with treats you pleasantly. The restaurant itself is located within a converted house. Seats looked like they had been decorated for Valentine’s Day(red and white motif). There are plenty of family pics and kitschy photos adorning the space. There aren’t too many seats; the restaurant maybe seats 40 patrons. I ordered fried chicken, a smothered pork chop, collard greens, baked mac n cheese, and mashed potatoes. The fried chicken pieces included one thigh consisting mostly of dark meat and a white chicken breast. The skin was pleasantly seasoned with a proper crisp. If anything, the chicken itself may have been a touch overdone. It paired well with the gravy from the mashed potatoes and the smothered pork chop which definitely was a bit grainier than I would have liked. The mashed potatoes have a liberal amount of black pepper and tend towards a solid consistency. The baked mac and cheese contained soft noodles interspersed with mounds of cheese and almost no breading(which was nice). Collard greens don’t have any ascertainable meat flavors which is great for vegetarians. Overall, for $ 20 including tip, it’s a pretty good meal with very generous portions. This is a city with a surprising amount of great soul food options. This is yet another one where you can find food happiness though my preferences are to Tony G’s and Bayseas. On a subsequent visit, I’d probably try the fried catfish as it looked absolutely delicious.

If I could give a 10 star rating I would. My sister took me to Mrs. Kitchen for lunch while I was vacationing in San Antonio and of all the places she took me… This was my favorite. Love the food and the hospitality was wonderful.

Whenever I want some great soul food and don’t want to cook it myself, I come to Mrs. Kitchen’s. The food is excellent and you receive a wonderful value for your money. I’ve had the catfish, fried chicken, and the meatloaf as my central dishes and they have all been scrumptious. The desserts are fabulous – I have ordered two of them before – the chocolate cake and the 7-up cake is absolutely divine! Oh, and the cornbread is slightly sweet but not too much! I love that. The service is impeccable. Everyone speaks as soon as you walk in the door and the waitresses are friendly and courteous. They are professional without being cold – and that is important to me. Finally, this is located in an old rambling house with family pics on the walls and full of folks having a nice meal. It reminds me of visiting my grandmother’s house in terms of food and décor. I will continue to return again and again – I’m also determined to get a slice of their famous lemonade cake!

Mrs. Kitchen is a small inverted house into a restaurant. If you don’t know what you’re looking for you and miss it, but it is so worth the search. We arrived on a Sunday after church with a party of 10 and more to come. Our wait wasn’t long. Unfortunately when we got there a few of the dishes had already sold out. I ordered the two entrée with the three sides and cornbread. I had fried chicken smothered in gravy, fried catfish, mac and cheese, collard greens and mashed potatoes. Everything was delicious and the food was in abundance. I wholeheartedly recommend this place. If you get your choice of waitresses I recommend Ms Pat, she will do you good and top it off with a whole bunch of love.

Stopped by Mrs. Kitchen for a quick lunch by myself between clients, and was so impressed! Immediately I was greeted by their sweet host and was taken to a table, where I was quickly greeted by my server, Mildred, who was friendly and fast. It is run out of the inside of a small old house and I watched the small dining room quickly fill up after I was seated. I ordered the veggie side plate because I figured it would be fast and easy. The Black Eyed Peas and Mac and Cheese were truly out of this world! I can’t wait to go back when I have more time to enjoy a full entrée and dessert!

This place is definitely legit!!! It appears to be a house converted to a restaurant and very small. Can imagine this place getting backed up if you plan to eat there but the food is definitely worth it. I’ve tried other soul food places in town and this is by far the best and also the cheapest. I got the 2 meat lunch special which includes 2 meats and 3 small sides with bread for $ 12. Can’t beat this price! The fried chicken was GOOD. The breading was just enough, not over done to where it is to thick and seasoning was just perfect. It was juicy and perfectly cooked! The fried pork chop was good but over cooked(it was slightly hard). It is still better than other places i’ve tried. The portion of the sides were just perfect. Since there were 3 you couldn’t ask for more. I got the mac and cheese, dirty rice and black eyed beans, which were all good. If I can get a 12 piece fried chicken dinner from this place, i definitely would do it! One thing to note, the PARKING is not the norm. There is a parking lot across the street from it or you can try to park at the back of the house… if there is space.

The best place for soul food. Everything is good, all the sides are tasty. The collard greens, cabbage, green beans, Mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, and my favorite dirty rice. The entrees include pork chops, fried and or smothered. Meatloaf w/brown or red gravy, catfish and the fried chicken is off the chain. You can also order it smothered. Don’t forget the cornbread ask for butter. Wednesday is enchilada Wednesday but get there early cause once it’s gone it’s gone. Cherry Kool-aid, lemonade or lemonade and tea mix to create swamp water. Last but not least the cakes are amazing the hummingbird, 7up, sweet potato, pineapple, chocolate and my personal fav«G money cake» You must try this place for a great east side dinning experience and don’t forget to ask for our favorite waitress Beverly.

Soul food… sooo DELISH!!! We drove down looking for this hidden gem and I did not expect it to be a house. It’s rather cute. However, parking is a complete nightmare. There’s limited parking out front but there’s some additional parking in the back. I wasn’t quite sure where you were supposed to be coming in or out. My advice, just park on the street! We walked in and were greeted with the sweetest staff and were seated immediately. My hubby and I both ordered the fried chicken with different side. I was expecting 1 breast and tiny sides. However, we were each given two breasts and a wing. That’s a big serving and neither one of us could finish it. I ordered the collard greens, dirty rice, and corn bread. And wow. they were total delicious! I can’t wait to head back and try some other dishes. BTW, they also have cherry kool aid! Sweet!!! As we were packing up our leftovers, we wanted to try some dessert and we heard about the famous Hummingbird Cake. However, they ran out. :(But, we ordered some chocolate cake to go and it was divine. I’ll be heading back, no doubt, and I’m sure I“ll be loving it. I recommend trying this place out!

I was really excited to visit Mrs. Kitchen. While I was not disappointed there were a few things that could improve as well as things that could not get any better. Service: We were greeted right away by a man in a suit. He was welcoming and kind and seated us right away. Our server asked my name and took our orders. She was very polite and kind although she stated several times that she«was slipping» because we did have empty glasses that never got filled and she stated that she should bring us butter that never arrived. We ordered dessert to go and she came back several times with an update of what they did not have. Overall she was kind and meant well. Food: My husband got the smothered pork chops, mashed potatoes and gravy, mac and cheese and corn bread. I got the fried chicken with collards and mac and cheese and the corn bread. We both got the sweet tea. My husband’s pork chops were hit and miss on the same plate. One fell apart with just a fork and the other was tough and overcooked. They really hit the nail on the head with the gravy though, it was delicious! My fried chicken was the best I’ve had since I lived in North Carolina. Perfect seasoning, moist, fried just right, and perfectly hot! You cannot go wrong with the fried chicken. Our sides were a bit cool when they arrived at our table but all were very good in flavor. My collards were perfectly seasoned, the mashed potatoes were home made, and the mac and cheese was creamy and cheesy. Our corn bread left a bit to be desired, it tasted like Jiffy mix with sugar. My husband would have preferred to have the gravy from his pork chops on his mashed potatoes, but there was some inconsistency there as the gravy on his potatoes tasted like the bottled gravy from the grocery store. You need the sweet tea. It was easily the best sweet tea that I’ve had since I’ve arrived in San Antonio. I’d like to take a gallon home, because even I cannot prepare it that well. We got the hummingbird cake and the pineapple cake to go. We just took a bite and WOW, so good! Huge slices and delicious! You cannot go wrong! Ambiance: This place needs an update really terribly. While walking through the restaurant, I was afraid of my heel slipping through the floor. It needs repair. When I sat down at my table, I thought the floor was going to call through and every single time someone walked by, I felt the change in the floor. I’m not a skinny-minny and I won’t be getting any skinnier by visiting Mrs. Kitchen. Also, the décor was very dated. I also witnessed many a traffic jam with the waitresses trying to deliver food from the kitchen through the line to pay. It’s just a messy situation and I could easily see myself tripping on the floor and falling into someone’s hot meal as it’s trying to be delivered. I was a bit afraid to visit the restroom. Overall, we will return. We are dying to try the fried fish and I’d love to have another piece of fried chicken.

My banker called a couple of weeks ago. She wanted to have a meeting and suggested lunch while going over some business things. I shared with her how I wanted to try a place I’d heard good things about(Mrs. Kitchen Soul Food Restaurant and Bakery). It’s a soul food place. Baby, it’s filled both my stomach and my soul. I ordered the two entrée, three sides, cornbread and a sweet tea. For me it meant a smothered pork chop, two pieces of fried chicken, collard greens, baked mac and cheese and french fries. It was all so good! The banker and I wound up splitting a slice of Hummingbird cake for dessert. My friends, you’ll need a stomach much larger than a hummingbird’s to finish off the ample size of food they serve you. The tea, did I like it? I don’t know, I only had 5 glasses and still wanted more. Definitely top three in my lifetime regarding the taste of the tea. Who comes here? Today I saw the sheriff for Bexar County, neighborhood people, military personnel, blue collar workers, a banker and me. Attentive staff, great tasting food and the feeling like you’ve gone to eat at your Grandmother’s house. You know, the one who makes everything taste so good. Loved it!!!

Super busy Soul Food Sunday after church restaurant. We were VERY underdressed in shorts & t-shirts while everyone else was in their Sunday Best. I should have remembered that, but it’s been a long time since I’ve been to a soul food place on Sunday. Being the only non-black guests, I was very hopeful for quenching my soul food cravings. Very limited parking! Parked on side street on other side of car place. We were seated right away … In the very back side of the very last room at a 2-top that shared a wall with the dishwasher(I’m guessing from the noise coming through the wall). Cajun hot sauce & pepper sauce already on the table! Hell Ye-Ah! Prompt service. Daisy took our drink order immediately upon seating. I only stated iced tea and she didn’t ask for clarification. When she brought our drinks, I asked if it was already sweet & she said yes. It tasted like instant tea with lemon so maybe she gave me their«swamp water.» Ok but nothing to get excited about. We placed our food orders(fried pork chop, smothered pork chop, and mixed fried chicken with 5 sides: 2mac & cheese, 1 cabbage, 1 greens, &1 candied yams). A sign at the front stated that when busy please expect 45 – 60 minutes for food to arrive. We got our food within 10 minutes of ordering. The food looked amazing! Unfortunately, some of it looked much better than it tasted. The fried pork lacked flavor and was over cooked. Tough & dry. The smothered pork was tender & good but I’ve had better. My wife loves mac&cheese. She said it was good but not great. She doesn’t analyze her food the way I do. It was milky creamy, not cheesy creamy. Lacked flavor. But she added hot sauce to it and was happy. Lol. That’s my girl! The cabbage was great! The candied yams were Amazing! The collard greens were really good. Not the best(I make better) but add pepper sauce and they were really good. The fried chicken was excellent! It was crispy on the outside and moist on the inside. It could have used a little seasoning but I wiped up gravy from the smothered pork and ate every bite! We ended up getting a ToGo box for the sides and the pork chops(our pup will enjoy). Then we ordered a piece of hummingbird cake. After quite a wait we asked and were told that it was up at the register with our ticket, ready when we were. We wanted to eat it there but maybe they assumed that since we boxed our food ToGo that we wanted it ToGo too. So we went to the front, paid, collected our cake, and left. We took a couple of bites in the car. A little dry but EXCELLENTFLAVOR! Overall, my wife said 3 stars but I’m homesick and was thankful to eat greens & cabbage I didn’t have to cook. Lol. Plus the service was fantastic, & everyone was friendly, staff and guests. I would definitely go again. But I will also try greens and pork chops elsewhere.
