I had the pleasure(?) of having a procedure here yesterday. My entire experience, from start to finish, was some of the best health care I have received in my life! I received a pre-op call from an RN the day before, and she spent 15 minutes on the phone with me going over a very thorough health history as well as giving me complete instructions for the next day. When we arrived on the big day and entered the building’s atrium, a sign pointed us to what looked like an innocuous office door, but once inside there was a large, comfortable waiting room with coffee(for the family/friends — NOT the patients, lol), a quiet TV and a large screen that showed your progress throughout the process(hold area, OR, PACU) by a secret number assigned to you and given only to your escort. Admissions was quick and painless, and I was soon called back to get prepped. The nurses were so friendly but also incredibly focused on patient safety. I have to say, as an Operating Room nurse myself, there are some facilities that have grudgingly adopted the Joint Commission recommendations to prevent wrong-side surgery. MASH is no such place. Everyone, from the admissions clerk, to pre-op nurse, OR nurse, and even the scrub tech and anesthesia techs, double checked my procedure site and my identity. While I am used to running my own Operating Room and hand-picking the staff involved in my procedures(yes, I am a control freak), I felt completely at ease and SAFE throughout the entire process. I was made very comfortable on the way to the OR and after a last check of the site, I drifted off. Woke up with a large cast on my foot and was pushed away to the Recovery Room. My wonderful nurse was patient with me as I asked the same questions repeatedly(thanks to the miracle drug Versed). After I was mostly awake, I thought she would offer me some ice chips. NO! They had Diet Pepsi! She advised me to sip it slowly but, for this Diet Coke fiend, that cold brown caffeine delivery system slipping down my throat put me into immediate Nirvana. After that, I was moved to a recliner, my friend came in to sit with me and receive discharge instructions with me(in case I was still under the influence of anesthesia). I was dressed and wheeled out to a waiting car. Again,(yes, broken record, sorry), I feel that the care provided was not only highly competent, but very very thorough(especially for a same day podiatry procedure). Good medicine doesn’t rely on people’s memories. Like the airline industry, it involves lists that get double checked, as they did with me. Methodist Ambulatory Surgical Hospital(they also have 30 inpatient beds, a full radiology suite and an on-site lab) is MOST highly recommended for any of your same-day-surgical needs in San Antonio.
