We came around 7 on Monday night, and there was only 3 tables included us. The atmosphere seems little dark. We ordered Nigeria salmon and yellow tail. Turned out like disaster. The quality of the fish was not good at all and even the rice, too dry. We also had spicy ground pork ramen and tonkatsu ramen. They both salty, the structure of the belly pork isn’t good and tastes fishy since they support to grill the meat to reduce the smell and fat in it. I mean. They tried their best, but they don’t know how to make good ramen. If you want good ramen in SA, I would recommend Kimura, they’re so much better. This restaurant has big menu, they have many kinds of food from China, Korea, Japan… But I think it would be better if they only focus on something specific food not like having everything and don’t work out any of it. Besides, service is the only«savior» for our visit. The waitress was nice and friendly. Would not recommend.

Glancing at rating stars I was unsure to try. Mongolian Beef was delicious & would definitely come back. Yes they specialize in sushi but I’m not a fan. Menu is a little busy but I typically get the Asian food norm.

Overall, as Japanese food goes, this place is passable. Their main restaurant off 410 is better. Anyway, we ended up here late last night and it was pretty empty, which was good because they only had 3 people on staff — one sushi chef, one in the kitchen, and a waitress. We ordered some ramen — the wife got the chashu ramen and I the spicy minced pork. The chashu ramen is loaded with nice thick cuts of chashu pork. I got the spicy minced pork ramen. Both broths were flavorful and rich. The noodles, however, were a little on the sticky side. It’s kind of funny that when you order ramen, you get a bowl of miso(or sweet and sour) soup with it. We both found the miso soup to be overly salty. Lastly, as previously stated, the restaurant was understaffed and it took a while to get our food and our bill.

Not going to judge the appearance of the place like the rest. Generally I care more about the food. Ordered the ramen. It’s not authentic by any means. But seeing as there is no Japanese population in the area I guess I shouldn’t expect authentic Japanese food. The egg was over cooked and it was missing some of the vegetables but otherwise not horrible. I took my niece who has never tried ramen before and she liked it a lot. So if you’re not a foodie you will be satisfied. Have to mention, I sat by the sushi bar but didn’t order any sushi. It didn’t look fresh and it wasn’t covered safely so I wouldn’t recommend that just on food preparation alone.

Don’t judge a book by its cover. The building looks Like an old Pizza Hut. At 8pm on a weeknight there was nobody in the parking lot. We were a little hesitant. Our first trip in we found out they didn’t serve alcohol but they were BYOB. After a discussion we decided to go to Henry’s liquor store to get some Saki and go back. We did the all you can eat menu. Except for the fried spring rolls and the fried Malibu roll the food was great. Too much batter! The chicken egg rolls were yummy. The shrimp fried rice was amazing. The beef and chicken yakisoba dishes were quite tasty. Our eyes were bigger than our stomachs. We ordered a bit too much. Don’t go thirty minutes before closing so you can order as you go and not all at once before the chef leaves. There was no dessert in house. We didn’t have room for it anyway. Life is good.

Not very impressed. It’s a refurbished Pizza Hut that serves Japanese, Korean, and some Thai dishes. Sushi is overpriced as most rolls are $ 16. Lunch specials are not that great either as they include 5 piece sushi rolls. Who the hell gets fill with 5 pieces of sushi?! Definitely not coming here again :-/

Ok ramen, a little bit salty and sushi isn’t fresh.

By far, the best, freshest and tastiest sushi in San Antonio. I just ate there yesterday and I am going back today. The best value for sushi in town too. You can literally stuff yourself for less than $ 25. You cant do that at any other sushi place around here. 2 days in a row now, I would eat there everyday if I could. If you want a delicious roll, ask for the«Bobby» roll. You will not be disappointed. Go see my buddy Saul.

Horrible. When I pulled up to this place, it was dead. I should’ve listened to my gut, like one guy mentioned below. The fish chunks were huge but so gross. They did not taste fresh. They were clean; it wasn’t «fishy,» but tasted as if it was being preserved for a while. Like, the fish was old but they kept it clean, if you know what I mean. I love sushi, but this place had a taste that lingered and I didn’t eat sushi for a whole month after visiting this nasty old pizza hut. Now, the location off of 410 is good. Go to that one.

I am here from out of town and a friend of mine brought me to this restaurant and it is amazing. I ordered the Malibu roll lunch special and not only was a huge and filling, but the flavors were spectacular! The crab salad on top was an added bonus of deliciousness. They also have alot more to choose from if you are not into Sushi. They have chinese dishes, salads, noodles, and a large kids menu.

My dragon roll was mushy and not very good. «Flavorless and depressing» are the two words that come to mind. On a good note, the service was great.

Absolutely dreadful. This place literally has some of the worst sushi I’ve ever had this side of a supermarket. And really, it may be that I’m not being very fair to the supermarket by saying so. Usually, I like to boast that I like my restaurants to have a little hole-in-the-wall quality to them, but when I pulled up next to Kai Sushi, I had a feeling I was in trouble. And man, I wish I listened to my gut. The Land and Sea roll was among the least appetizing rolls I’ve ever seen or tasted. And it may sound like I’m being a little dramatic here, but this is a literal fact. It looks awful and it tasted worse. The other two rolls I had were passable. One had kiwi and strawberries, and it was VERY sweet, but it was edible. The other was extremely sauce-laden to the point of being difficult to eat, but again, it wasn’t something that I gagged on. But the Land and Sea roll… I just couldn’t make up for it. My wife and I are NOT people that like to waste food, but we couldn’t help it. We threw over half of it away. On top of everything else, it was also really expensive! I’ve eaten sushi at plenty of places over the years, and rarely am I surprised by the bill, but I was here. And since I was picking things up to take home, that’s before I tasted anything! It felt expensive even before I found out I wasn’t happy. Please, find another place. Or pick another type of food. I usually do a place the courtesy of eating there twice before I write a review, but I just can’t bring myself to do it. It’s THAT bad.

I’d heard some good things about this place. I placed an order to go. I ordered the spicy ground pork ramen and a hot and sour soup. The broth of the soup had a really good taste but the soup needs more to it. Moving on to the ramen. Oh sweet Jesus! This stuff is off the charts! It tasted great! It was just spicy enough. The noodles were perfectly cooked. I cant say enough about it. I’ve told like 10 people about it. I didn’t pick it up so I don’t know about the interior. P. s. It was even better the next day!

15 minutes to close… I try and find the best non-chain restaurant for ramen noodles because I’m white and I have no clue where to go! They see me turn into the parking lot, ran up and locked the door, shut off the lights while I tried to go through the door and not answer the phone! Oh on a side note… they close at 9 .if I could give it 0 stars, I would.

This is a most excellent little place of happiness hidden inside of an old pizza hut. A wonderful repurpose for this old building. I have always gotten excellent service here. And the food is delicious and fresh. This location has an all you can eat sushi option and the sushi available for this is a very nice selection. They just started to offer Ramen here in 11⁄2014. I have tried a couple different ones and liked them both. The one I liked the most is the spicy ground pork ramen. They have some nice bento boxes for lunch at very good price. I definitely recommend this place for lunch or dinner. A warning they are only open for dinner on Saturdays. See the hours for more info.

I used to live in Japan, and speak Japanese at a conversation level. I am sorry to say that the ramen here(I had tonkotsu; R2 on the menu) was a dish of its own rather than a relative of Japan. While I did enjoy the tonkotsu, which turned out to be a side dish, the ramen itself was difficult to eat. The soup was bland, the spinach tasted like it was unwashed, and the worst part about it was there was a 2:1 ratio of corn per noodles. Corn??? Corn and ramen??? Corn and ramen broth go together as well as ketchup and mustard in your generic Italian soup at Olive Garden :( But yes, the tonkotsu was good, though they did put the sauce in a small to-go package. The interior was very dim with the blinds down, and the music consisted of country and Michael Jackson. I got the vibe that this place is still new. If so, maybe things will turn around in the future. It also currently has a BYOB policy as they do not yet have a license to sell alcohol. That’s one way to make the food taste better here!

This place is so unassuming, but it’s a great little hidden gem in my current hood. Yes, it’s a recycled Pizza Hut, so the ambiance is a little weird, but are you really going for sushi on Nacogdoches for the ambiance? You can get a bento box for lunch and get out of the door for under $ 10. For me, their bento boxes are at least 2 meals, but for most people, it would just be a very large lunch. Trust me and go with the bulgogi. It’s delicious! For dinner, you have the option of any of the traditional or specialty rolls that most places around town have. The selection is huge, but unlike that other popular place, everything isn’t deep friend and cream cheese laden. They also have other dishes if you’re not as adventurous and just want something like an Americanized Chinese dish. They won’t judge you for that order, but I will. I’d love to keep this place a secret so I can still get in and out for lunch in half an hour, but I want them to stay open!

Just wanted to update my review on Kai. I love this place and it’s so close to the house I could walk it. The Shrimp Tempura Appetizer is to die for. I could eat lunch here every day.

I love the original. I eat here at LEAST once a week, sometimes more. Mike the owner is amazing. Mario and Westley the waiters rock as well. The shrimp tempura bento box is great with lots of little goodies. Jo Jo Roll, Tekka Maki, the Red Dragon roll are all the bomb. The building is an old Pizza Hut and it still looks like an old Pizza Hut but the food is amazing. A. May. Zing.
