I’m currently in school in San Antonio. I really wanted some Mexican food after being deprived of some good eats. My friend and I absolutely loved it. The prices were okay, as for the food-it was delicious. It reminded me of home and I would definitely stop on in if you were looking for the authentic feel. I can’t wait to go back one more time before I leave. I had the beef fajita plate and it was wonderfully seasoned. Service was awesome and again, the food was delicious.

Nothing special about my gordita plate. Rice, yes. Beans, yuck. Flour tortillas were pretty good. I heard another table say they drove from the north side of town because this is the best Mexican restaurant in town. Maybe if I come back I’ll order something different next time! This was just the first thing I saw on my lunch break, the creole place across the street was closed today. Boo! Rating system: 5 stars = I’ll drive across town specifically for this, and rave to all my friends about it! 4 stars = Would return and recommend. 3 stars = Indifferent, average, acceptable. 2 stars = You could drag me here. 1 star = I will not be returning.

My boyfriend and I have passed this restaurant on our way through alamo heights and always wondered what kind of Mexican food laid beyond it’s borders. We tried out the place and found a very vast menu. The prices were exceptionally reasonable. I had a 3 taco dinner for $ 5.49 and my boyfriend had an enchilada, taco, beans and rice for about the same price. While the quality of the food wasn’t EXCEPTIONAL. The price was fantastic and so was the service. Great chips and salsa, great waiters and an at home feel to the restaurant. We will go back, for sure.

If I can rate this place a star. it would honestly be a negative star. I used to enjoy dining at this restaurant but lately my experience has changed for the worst. The food is way overpriced, especially when food is not made to my liking. I am not a picky person but my last visit there my gorditas were very soggy and sloppy. I had to end up eating one with a fork because it ended up looking like a salad. The atmosphere was so comforting but now it is very empty and deserted… probably because the food is cheap in quality and customer service is nowhere near comforting.

The service is not the best when the waiters are more occupied with their social life, but if you can hold out the tacos are worth the wait, service cant upset my appetite

My girlfriend and I ate there because it was so close and it was rated well on UrbanSpoon. I seriously would not feed that food to my dog. It was the worst food I have ever had in my life. The place is filthy and nasty and we got diarrhea after eating there.

I wasn’t very impressed with the carne guisada here because there was a lot of fat in it. I give Johnny’s props for the good Spanish rice and the flour tortillas. The chips were lukewarm and overcooked and the salsa didn’t have a lot of heat. Service was good.

Picked up some tacos from here yesterday and you could smell the seasoning as soon as my husband got in the car. Ordered beef fajita, carne guisada with cheese and bean and cheese for the kiddos. The carne guisada was incredible! Made up my mind to never get them from anywhere else! Lol. Just as I smelled, the fajita was overseasoned but my husband liked them so I passed mine on. The bean and cheese were really good too thought, the tortillas made just right. They had them out Pretty fast too so I would definitely recommend them.

I must agree with Josh R. These Carne Guisada taco’s are the best I’ve ever tasted. I agree with the other’s as well as far as ambiance. Don’t go for that. I live in Maryland and when I go to San Antonio to visit family I have one thing in mind… a Carne Guisada taco w/cheese from Johnny’s. It’s simply that good! My daughter doesn’t like meat but she eats this taco in 1 minute. lol! It’s tasted the same for 18 yrs. I also visited that Taco Taco joint with all the reviews… Wow what a dissapointment.

you know taco shops in sa are a dime a dozen. and difference is what I what I want! and this place is great the carne guisada is so good! Now it is the only thing I get there I think they have perfected it down to a science! The first time I went there I was 13 and it has made a permanent impression! so if you are in that area try it!

This place is dirty. The tables weren’t clean. The floor had sticky stuff on it. The parking lot was strewn with garbage. I came here on a Sunday afternoon looking for lunch. I didn’t find anything wonderful. I had the chicken mole, and was disappointed. The chips were overcooked, and the salsa was weak. The chicken mole tasted like it came from a can. The veggies were wilted– they looked like they had sat out the previous night. The service was poor. They got my mother’s order wrong. The prices were fair. Skip this place. There’s so many better places to eat in SA.

I dropped in for lunch and had the No. 1 Special with taco, cheese enchilada and chalupa. I thought the hot sauce was awesome! Food was pretty good, the only meh was that the enchilada sauce was a little bland. But overall a pretty good little mexican food place. Great service as well. I’ll be returning.

Wow, this place was terrible. I’ve had better Mexican food for less money at Taco Bell. There are so many great Mexican restaurants in San Antonio. Don’t waste your money at Johnny’s.

When we moved to the neighborhood we promised ourselves we’d try the few restaurants within walking distance. So far this is the only one we’ve made it to. Just a few blocks away & open until 2am, this place hits the spot for fast & cheap Mexican.
