Gilberts Restaurant

The staff is friendly. My daughter wanted pancakes and it was already past the time they serve breakfast not a problem the waitress and staff were kind and helpful. My daughter was happy with her pancakes and my cheese enchiladas were hot and fresh tasting cheese so delicious. I f your lucky you might even get a serenade or two from the owner. Westside hospitality at its finest.

Gilberto and his staff are awesome. We go there 2 sometimes 3 times a week and can’t get enough of their food. The prices are very reasonable and it’s a great Family atmosphere. If you ever visit San Antonio you have to try Gilbert’s.

Absolutely loved it! With so many Mexican restaurants in San Antonio to choose from, this one is a hit! Super friendly service from all of the girls and Gilbert himself! This place is definitely a hidden gem and the hole in the wall you are looking for. It smells like grandma’s kitchen when you walk in the door. Try the carne guisada with cheese or the cheese enchiladas. You won’t be disappointed. We live across town but we will be back soon Gilbert!

Great place for authentic Tex-​mex. The owner is fantastic. Food is great — glad we read the reviews for the Jave special — delicious. Will be a regular spot on our visits to San Antonio.

Brought the family here when we came to visit our son at Randolph AFB. Gilbert’s is great. We tried a lot of the menu items and everything was terrific. The Jave special is delicious! The tortillas are house made. Chips and salsa is good. The staff here is all family and treat you like family when you are here. I can highly recommend Gilbert’s to anyone wanting authentic Tex-​Mex food in the area.

Going into a 5 star Unilocal rated location certainly sets some expectations. And most of them were met, but I don’t give 5 stars for really nice folks with average quality food. The clutter and distracting run-​downess was anticipated and it didn’t bother too much. But after trying the super nachos, cheese enchiladas and crispy tacos, I had enough sampling to conclude that with all of the tex-​mex food choices in San Antonio, this is not 5 star material. For example, the nachos were not even assembled in the kitchen. They brought out Sysco squeezable pyramids to squeeze the stuff out yourself. It wasn’t pretty, or tasty. The square, spam-​like, meat substance in the enchilada sauce was no bueno. The cripsy tacos were fine, but nothing to set them apart from any taqueria Jalisco or even the chain restaurants. The staff were very friendly, almost family-​like, but the food and quality needs some attention.

My favorite place to have lunch with friends. Foods are really good. Staffs are nice and fast. Highly recommended!!!

Unilocalers didn’t steer me wrong with this one. We had fast courteous service. It felt 80’s inside which was kind of nice. Had the javi special and it was great. They made all of their tortillas and chips for the salsa in house. Got a big lunch that I couldn’t even finish for $ 7.

We came here while visiting San Antonio for my sons graduation from BMT at Lackland AFB. During town pass, we asked what he wanted to do and one of those things was to eat some great tex-​mex. I found Gilbert’s on Unilocal among other restaurants and gave him the choice. He picked Gilbert’s saying it was the perfect equation of rating/​price/​proximity so to Gilberts we went.
It is not in a beautiful strip mall nor does the exterior seem inviting however I trust my fellow Unilocalers so we went inside, sat and ordered. WOW! I can honestly say that in the four days we spent in San Antonio and all the meals we ate, this was by far the best meal we had. The food is authentic with homemade tortillas that are amazing! I have a picky 11 year old that could have eaten the chicken fajita meat all by itself. The portions are huge, and while I did not have the enchiladas, my son had one in his platter and agreed with the reviews that it was the best he has ever eaten.
Definitely eat here!

This is a family favorite. My family has been coming to Gilberts for 3 generations. My grandfather used to go to his first location, then he moved his location to the current address. Gilbert is super friendly ans so are all the staff. I live in California and have been missing good Tex-​Mex for a long time. Originally being from Austin and San Antonio, you get spoiled on big portions so there is always something missing when I eat Mexican in California. The food here is cheap and filling. I always order either the Lady Plate or the Beef Mexican Plate. I haven’t been here in years and asked my waitress if they have Big Red soda, and she replied «of course, you can’t have Mexican food without Big Red». True that! Gilbert is a legend in the San Antonio community and a good family friend. I have nothing but love for Gilbert and wish him and his family the best. From the Morrison family to yours Gilbert, thank you for being there.

Perhaps we just caught Gilbert on a bad day, but for now I don’t understand all the good reviews. Gilbert is very nice, the pork enchilada was not bad, and his salsa is quite good. Our waitress was friendly and attentive. BUT the floor was dirty, most of our chips were over cooked or burned (as was one of the flour tortillas). I had the Gilbert’s special, my wife had the ladies special, and we got the kids cheese enchilada for our daughters. Except for my enchilada, everything else was bland. At least it wasn’t expensive, but I doubt we’ll be back.

You must try the Javi’s Plate. I have been eating here for years and never left disappointed. The chips and salsa are awesome! I know this is gonna sound crazy but the cheese on the enchiladas is so good! It tastes like good, gooey government cheese! Don’t act like you don’t know what I’m talking about! Yum! We eat here a few times a month. (Probably more if they were open for dinner)

Was recommended this place because I was told that the puffy tacos were way better than Henry’s. I grew up in this area & never knew this place was here so I said I was going to try it the next time I was in town. Came today (Saturday) all ready to get the puffy tacos but was told they only have them during the week so I ordered a soft beef taco while waiting for a to-​go order of two dishes recommended on this site (carne guitar a plate & Javi special — enchilada plate) to take to my mom’s for our lunch. Let me tell you — they were delicious! Thank you to Philip S. For the recommendation! I will be back during the week to get the puffy tacos. Next time hubby is with me I will be bringing him here!

Wow! I found me another hole in the wall restaurant with fantastic food. It’s a somewhat small place. Its perfect for small groups of 4 — 6 people. I got there about 11:30 am and the place was packed. But the service was quick. The owner is a former Tejano music artist. And walls are decorated with pictures of many famous Tejano artists. I ordered the Mexican plate and substituted the tamale for an extra enchilada. Got my food very quickly. The food was nice and hot. I’m gonna have to add these enchiladas as one of my favorites. Covered in a creamy sauce with small pieces of beef. Very good. Great taste. The beans had a nice homemade taste. The rice was also good. Not over seasoned and no extra ingredients added like peas or corn. The tortillas were good but you could tell they were machine made. Checkout was a little slow due to the big crowd and the cashier was being his friendly self and talking to everyone. I will be back when the urge hits me to have some good enchiladas. Also gotta come back and try their breakfast.

Nicest family, ever. Gilbert talked our ears off, the food was great. Definitely recommend.
