This bakery has closed down. Note posted on door that says after 11 years we have decided to close. Don’t know why their website is still up but… They are definitely out of business. Came from Dallas to try them out.

El Sol Bakery is the only bakery in Southtown(that I’m aware of) that shells out whole grain pastry goodness. The sweet breads and cookies are all whole grain. They have a nice espresso machine for all of your caffeine needs. The owner was very kind and gave us a brief lesson on how he prepares each treat so that you can still have your sweets and know that it’s not all 100% bad. Their«New Healthy Menu» breakfast and lunch items range from $ 7-$ 9. Will return for another concha fix!

The best whole grain breads in all of San Antonio. I highly recommend it. Lunch is always healthy. Easy to find in the king William area

This place is just plain awful. From the poor tasting, poorly made espresso based coffee, to the rude owner, I am quite surprised by the positive reviews on this place. I live within walking distance, and I am disappointed that I have to drive somewhere else for a decent latte. The pastries are pretty good, but definitely not healthy.

Lovely local bakery. Great espresso and nice not overly sweet apple empanadas.

Horrible customer service plus discrimination. Went and asked for information on their breads, and owner said… «We only have healthy breads here… No tacos». Thought he was joking so I asked another question and his reply was the same. «We only have healthy breads here, no tacos». This incident was so surreal. As I walked out I couldn’t figure out if he was a racist or if was discrimination of me being overweight? Either way never going back, plus going to blast on social media. If your business model is to encourage people to eat healthy, unnecessary, discriminatory comments are definitely not going to help motivate or inspire.

Really enjoyed our time here for breakfast! The service and hospitality was fantastic. Truly authentic. This bakery was also featured on the San Antonio episode of the Daytripper. Check it out at:

Outstanding bakery! In town from Fort Worth and this was just the hidden gem we were looking for. Super friendly owner and staff with very fresh food. The Italian coffee is a real step up from Starbucks and we love the whole grain offerings on the baked goods. Will be a «must do» the next time we are in town. If you love in SA, don’t wait to try this quaint bakery!

After driving past this tiny place by my work countless times, I finally pulled it up on Unilocal to see if I should go– though it says«bistro», which makes me think«lunch», there’s never really any cars in front of it. For a while I assumed it was closed but found the Unilocal listing that showed otherwise. Placed my order for the Mediterranean salad topped with chicken salad– only to find they were out of chicken, so tuna salad it was. No biggie. I received a flower-shaped cookie with strawberry preserves while I waited– each lunch combo comes with a cookie, which is a nice touch. The couple who owns this small place seem to have a good system going where he is the social one who helps the customers, and she is the silent(and slightly scowly?) one who makes the food. My order came out quickly, and I ate at my office. The food was light and simple, but also tasty– the Mediterranean salad seems to be their only salad, and is a smallish portion of mixed greens with chopped tomatoes and a good amount of feta crumbles, topped with the scoop of tuna and some dried cranberries. The tuna itself was not my favorite– a little more mayo than I’d prefer, but I’m not a tuna salad person in the first place, hence it not being my original order. I’d go back to try it with the chicken, though.

We went in on a not busy Fri afternoon to get something sweet. We were greeted by the owner with a, «Are you looking for bread?», indeed we were looking for pastries. I’ve known of this bakery and sampled some of their treats at another now closed location. But I didn’t realize they also offer plate lunches, this day it was tilapia with pasta salad and something else I don’t recall. They were a couple of other patrons eating and what I saw on their plates looked bland with no color. I think they’re trying to market themselves as a bistro but far from it. Onto the pastries, they offer a small selection of pan dulces and we had questions as to what was what but the owner seemed bothered that we didn’t know exactly what we wanted so we quickly settled on a couple of familiar items and left. Its a shame cause if he had been just a wee bit friendlier we would have bought much more and I’d be writing a much more positive review. Plus what we got was good enough, about 7 items that ended up being around $ 7.50. That’s a lot for Mexican pastries even for whole wheat.

El Sol bakery is a great healthy food alternative. El Sol Bakery in San Antonio is a great place to eat. The owner Mauriicio is a great owner and very friendly! El Sol makes you feel like family when you are there, not a customer.

I’m feeling odd rating this place as a middle of the road establishment with so many people obviously enjoying it more than myself. I totally agree that the fare is healthier and more eco-conscious than many SA establishments – love me some whole wheat. I don’t think that it’s overpriced as far as quality of ingredients. But that’s about the end of me seeing anything special about this café. The croissants are not croissants, they are wheat crescent-shaped rolls. Just because they have a lighter texture than the average roll doesn’t make them any more than a roll. The preparation of the food is always good, but the service for me has always been lacking. If you want to be at a place with a wide variety of breakfast selections, this is not the place. I want to like this place more, but I just haven’t found a reason yet. I know I’ll be back more now that I live much closer, but still not sure it will ever knock my socks off… you’ll hear about it if that changes, for sure ;)

Why does eating«healthy» have to be so expensive? I bought a whole-grain empanada and a marranito and my total was $ 1.75. That’s about twice of what I’d expect to pay in my neighborhood. Both were ok, and I thought the anise seeds in the empanada were a nice touch, but nothing stuck out enough to warrant me taking a special trip here just for the pan dulce.

Great food, decent prices. The Spanish guy who runs the place will get angry if you don’t order what he wants you to order, which is of significant added comic value. The baked goods are wholesome and tasty. Good spot for early morning meals and occasional lunches.

This is a great place if you want to eat a little more healthy. All bakery and pasta items are whole wheat and made on site. I have bought the croissant rolls as few times and taken them home as a side for dinner or used them in a sandwich. The service is always friendly and the owner is all about making sure you are happy. And I am not typically a fan of a turkey burger, but unless I was told would not have known.

Went to this bakery in Southtown last month on a Saturday morning. Off the beaten track, but worth it. The food was not only fantastic, but also organic. The food is simple and generous. The bakery on the premises uses only whole wheat. Whole wheat cookies were a pre-meal treat and I would be hard pressed to tell the difference. The coffee was wonderful. Described as «Italian» by the owner, it was fantastic and a perfect way to start a busy Saturday. Make the trip, especially if you are staying in town.
