Consistently good and very affordable. I’ve tried most of the menu and it is all done right. The pork carnitas are the best: fresh pork grilled hot, super flavor and very tender.

What do you come to a chicken place for? The chicken, right? Imagine my disappointment when the person at the counter shook her head and said with genuine sadness — «No chicken.»(I don’t know why, but it turns out they won’t have chicken until after 2 pm tomorrow.) Nothing daunted, I took a deep breath and asked for Caldo Rez — I mean, you can’t go wrong with soup, right? Right! My caldo bowl was brim full — the usual goodies, cabbage, potatoes, corn, meat, and the sweetest carrots I’ve ever had. The veggies were delightfully cooked, not as mushy as at many other places. But the heart of any soup is the broth, and it’s here that Al’s really shone. Flavorful, rich, not(very) greasy — this bowl was good to the very last drop. Did I say it came with lots of lime wedges? With a generous container of Mexican rice? And with a container of some of the best corn tortillas you’ll find anywhere? Did I say all this came to under $ 5? Al’s, I’m still sad about the chicken — but if you’d had the bird available, I wouldn’t have ordered what turned out to be a memorable Caldo. Sometimes disappointments turn out to be doorways to a new taste adventure — thanks, Al’s!

Oh my gosh the grilled chicken is amazing and so worthy of the high rating, I didn’t even remember the sides I’m still licking my fingers.

Last update: 26 September, 2012. Really stand-up chicken plate. Follow the beans/rice pro tip. Best corn tortillas in SA. Salsa recipe has changed; it’s no longer a creamy green salsa. It’s not bad. It’s just not the unique salsa I loved. I stand by my go out of your way to eat here at least once recommendation.
