So, here’s the thing… My grandmother could have been considered a professional bingo player, when I was younger I was dragged to bingo halls all over South East Texas, it was always a great time. Now that my grandmother has passed I have a soft spot for bingo halls, and whenever my mother and I get together we always try to squeeze in a game of bingo in honor of Grandma Doris. In San Antonio there is a little bingo hall located on Military Drive sandwiched in a strip mall, overflowing with senior citizens and cigarette smoke. Sounds like my kind of fun. What makes this bingo hall different from others is that it remains old school, meaning that rather than use paper bingo cards and dobbers they use wooden bingo cards and those little translucent disks. You can play a variety of different colored bords, each board paying out and costing different amounts. It sounds complicated but it isn’t. We spent 4 hours at this hall, playing the 25 cent boards, smoking, and drinking Big Red. Don’t knock it, just try it, the seniors are more than welcoming, but be careful, they play quick and are out for blood, keep your hands and feet in your booth at all times or one might come up missing.
